About Lakshadweep Lakshadweep is a Union Territory of India. It was formed on 1 November 1956. The archipelago consists of 36 coral islands spread over an area of 3,200 km2 (1,200 sq mi) in the Arabian Sea and separated from each other by narrow channels. The lagoon area covers about 12 percent of its total surface area. They are for all practical purposes uninhabited; some are permanently manned by as few as three police officers and official sources list only 389 people as living there, though unofficial estimates put it closer to 4,000. There are no large townships or cities; each inhabited island has its own village.
