I’ve gotten used to Wiseman’s voice, but I still find it a little grandfatherly and since we’re at our big climax I don’t know how well it works in this context

then again I was expecting a frankly generic evil old man voice so the fact that they did something different is at least good

I guess Uranus and Neptune are at their posts and Saturn is in limbo I guess, apparently this isn’t a big enough disaster to justify waking her up

I do think its poetic that Pluto broke all three of her rules as gatekeeper and upon doing so she ended up being reborn as a person in her own right who was allowed to exist for more than just this

like once she becomes Setsuna her quality of life vastly improves, she has a life and a job and a family and friends

I always liked this motif of Sailor Moon having a comforting power

like yes I know I just said she gets a better life, but this is still so sad knowing what she’s walking into

I always felt bad for Sailor Moon here, any time we see her beg its sad

and here is the cliffhanger that had me going “OH MY GOD” when I first read it, like I immediately wanted to go back to the mall and buy the next volume

they could have at least let his cape be purple since the manga describes it as a sunset like lavender (I have my copy of this volume at my side so I’m not running upstairs like a jackass)

I can only imagine he wears all white this time for the sake of being different

I just realized Chibi-Usa doesn’t actually have a last name, but it should be Chiba unless he took her name

and there’s the bomb that everyone saw coming, nobody is gonna go into this being surprised because Crystal has approached this with the mentality that we already read the manga

maybe back in the day this was surprising, but nobody’s gonna be fooled now

“how....” Venus apparently can’t visualize these two having sex

“queen? me?” well you wanted to be a princess, but why stop there?

I love the fact that Endymion loves his wife so much that his bedtime stories to their child are about how much of a BAMF she is

hell the final page of the manga is basically Mamoru going “omg! Usako! I love you and your beautiful face!!! you’re a star, you’re THE star!!!”

but given how time travel works does this mean stories of Chibi-Moon were just omitted? eh time travel in this series is bullshit

Diana finally spoke and she is voiced by Debi Derryberry (that name though) and get this, like seriously sit your ass down, she voiced Jimmy Neutron

I feel like people probably think Usagi’s being irrational, but while all the Chibi-Usa stuff is going on three of her best friends are in the hands of an enemy and she just had a massive bomb thrown in her lap and honestly I never had a problem with her outburst for these reasons

the music that plays as Chibi-Usa walks through the palace is so nice

Mamoru is so good at pep talks that even his future self can pep talk himself

so for a brief moment it sounded like Matthew flubbed his line and called her “Esmerald”, but I think I was just mishearing things

I appreciate the clear contempt he shows when he says “Tuxedo Mask”

let’s get it on

Chibi-Usa still can get annoying in the manga at times (because I hate sassy children), but at the very least when she says she’s sorry for keeping her motives a secret I believe it. I understand why she behaves this way and that she wasn’t conspiring against Usagi. in the 90s anime I got no such feeling, she really was written as this repugnant brat who was manipulating the family and plotting against Usagi and I wanted to smack her around all Mommie Dearest style. if the writers of the 90s anime thought this would come off as cute or precocious it didn’t

also a key thing is Chibi-Usa really DOESN’T know what is going on, all she knows is her parents are in danger and she may have indirectly caused it by taking the crystal

“I don’t wanna go home, I wanna go sleep at Mamo’s house” me too, he has a huge ass TV

“my mommy? she is kind and beautiful, and a lot braver than me” see? Chibi-Usa knows her parents love her, Wiseman was just an asshole pulling strings

“haven’t you noticed? Mamo, Chibi-Usa is in love with you!” oh boy

well may as well dig into the very complicated way Chibi-Usa feels towards Mamoru

okay so she is stuck between seeing the past versions of her parents as not her parents, while still being aware of what they will grow to be. she knows Mamoru is her future father, but she still has this infatuation towards him that she cannot shake. in a way she can’t help it. I understood this, I know what Naoko was doing, and...I never liked this. the sort of feelings Naoko was tapping into are something too complex and too uncomfortable for a series like this. in fact I’ve NEVER read a manga or seen an anime that attempts anything like this (not even in seinen anime) and its for obvious reasons, this is getting dangerously close to the topic of incest. a lot of people have defended Chibi-Usa by saying she’s just a confused child and yes that is true, but this is still a subject that many people find just disturbing

and of coarse its amped up to eleven in the 90s anime where there were episodes taking place after R that have Chibi-Usa calling Mamoru her boyfriend or generally trying to come between him and Usagi. and they treated it as just a cute little thing, but this is something that always bothered me. I had friends who I’d show my VHS tapes to and they would always be all “wait, what?” when that stuff would happen. like imagine if in DBZ future Trunks time traveled as a kid instead of a teen, then imagine him having a crush on Bulma, then imagine him expressing that crush frequently enough to make it a running gag. pretty disgusting isn’t it?

anyway why do they keep adding these borders whenever they make faces?

also in the manga Usagi just looks like she’s fading, there isn’t this digital effect to it so that’s a weird decision

and here we have the infamous kitchen floor scene!

I mean they changed it a smidge, it doesn’t fade out with them kissing while laying on the floor, instead its from above and his face is clearly next to her’s while she has this serene smile, but there it is

they probably changed it in that way so people wouldn’t call it a sex scene, because honestly we all assume that’s what it is even though in the Dream Arc Usagi complains about wanting to take the relationship to the next level but she’s in a child body and can’t (though this could still be a quickie I suppose)

regardless seeing that when I was young made me feel VERY weird because this was like the fifth grade, and then I saw all the artwork Naoko has made of them in very intimate situations and the one image of Usagi topless with nipples and then the morning of their wedding day where they DEFINITELY had sex and...yeah these two man

I like how Queen Serenity is reprimanding Luna like an actual normal cat

they’re so cute when they’re all “you want me to come?” like yeah she’s very clear about this

so Pluto says this could have severe consequences, but we kinda don’t see them beyond the paradox of Usagi and Neo Queen Serenity in the same room and the crystal thing

time travel in this series is kinda a mess

okay Esmeraude was fucking hot, she was a knockout, and she wasted all that pining over Prince Fuck Boy

I forget the Boule brothers existed

Chiral is voiced by Doug Erholtz who voices Squall Leonhart and Achiral is voiced by Kyle Hebert who was Son Gohan and Kiba from Naruto

they’re wasted on such insignificant henchmen, maybe they’ll get bigger roles in other seasons

so I know the way Pluto’s skin was in the colored manga images is similar to this shade, but in the actual manga panels its shaded in a way that suggest she’d be darker so....eh I just wish her skin was a few shades deeper

I don’t even know how to tell the difference between these guys beyond just little things to Kyle Hebert’s voice that stick out

why does King Endymion have an accent now?

yup was it really worth hiring two noteworthy actors for these guys?

“ah its just a toy...you scared the hell out of me!” I like how genuinely upset he sounds

like in the 90s version (and I did watch the Viz dub of that episode) he came off more annoyed, but I prefer this

Moon Pride is still here.....okay

I don’t hate Moon Pride, I just thought they were using a different song

the reason I’m fine with the 90s anime recycling Moonlight Densetsu is because that song is iconic

in the place of Beryl and the Shitennou we have the Black Moon clan though and Chibi-Usa and Sailor Pluto (!!!) replaced Queen Serenity, which makes sense

seeing Prince Demande has already left my vagina desert wasteland

I have plenty of time to dig into why he always bothered me, but for now I will admit that he made for an appropriate villain given how feminist the series is

he’s basically Naoko’s way of warning you about obsessive and entitled men much like Gaston from Beauty and the Beast

so Demande is played by Matthew Mercer, he’s played by Jotaro Kujo

Saphir looks hot

he’s voiced by Lyon Smith who doesn’t have much to his name, but hopefully he builds himself a good career

WISEMAN WHAT HAPPENED!?

okay so the weird vocal distortion from the Dic dub is gone, that’s good, but....what the hell?

he’s played by Steve Kramer, an actor with credits in Power Rangers and many other shows

he was the Third Hokage from Naruto and frankly that voice would work here, but he made Wiseman sound like a charming old man which...maybe could work as he’s a manipulator but its weird

I don’t wanna blame Kramer for this since I know he has talent (look at his filmography, its massive) maybe this was what the line director wanted like doing this more subtly evil thing but right now its just strange

Rubeus is voiced by Steve Cannon (sometimes credited as Steve Staley) who was Toshiro Hitsugaya in Bleach and Neji in Naruto

also I can’t help but wonder if Rubeus’s design (and Hawk’s Eye’s) influenced Togashi when he created Hisoka, I mean....yeah

holy shit this scene is a who’s who of the villain voices

Petz is voiced by an actress named Jessica Gee who plays Mylene in Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir (I don’t watch it, but it seems worth mentioning)

Koan (who was always my favorite of the sisters) is voiced by Eden Riegel who was on All My Children and The Young and the Restless

I like her voice

I see Steve is just as overly proper sounding as he was when he played Neji

chee-bee Usagi

I know that’s likely the accurate way of saying it, but it sounds kinda weird hearing it in English

this is a stupid ass nitpick, but I wish she was saying Mama instead of Mommy

“I think I just had a vision” yeah in this version you have a lot of those, but don’t worry none of them will inspire you to break up with Usagi because you somehow came to the conclusion that would keep her safe (fuck. that. arc.)

“well we were at the park and she kinda just fell out of the sky” I snorted

“what a precious little thing” no...she’s not...

so I don’t hate Chibi-Usa like I did as a kid, I get why she acts the way she does, its just she still has these moments that annoy me though I will admit manga Chibi-Usa is marginally less annoying than the 90s anime version

Luna-P is such a deus ex machina and I don’t even care

“a secret love child perhaps?” you’re getting warmer

I don’t know if the reveal with her was a genuine surprise to people back in the day (after DBZ I’m not sure why that would be), but when I got into Sailor Moon I went in a very weird inconsistent order so in a way I always knew

where does Luna get the pens and stuff? fuck if I know

Asanuma looks like what would happen if Haruka and Jadeite had a baby

“you know him from school?” its funny because this question implies she never considered Mamoru having friends (he kinda doesn’t...)

Asanuma is so gay for Mamoru that they actually call attention to it

meanwhile we get our first look at Rei’s school where EVERYONE is gay for her

like remember the side story where Minako visited her school and a girl was giving Rei cookies she baked for her? that was adorable

Rei’s attempt to regain her poised image after acting like Usagi has always been cute

if I were to cosplay as a Sailor Moon villain I’d be Koan

I’m happy they kept that brief moment of Luna and Luna-P

something I will give the 90s anime is that they used the Ayakashi Sisters more and redeemed them

and I never understood why Rei, a Shinto priestess, went to a Catholic school

overall I will admit I like how the 90s anime handled this arc, in terms of all of them I think its the one they did the best

I always liked the Moon Rod, glad they colored it this way (because the coloring they did on the Moon Stick and Holy Grail still bugs me)

I think Zoisite is the only one of the Shitennou who’s Crystal design doesn’t appeal to me, it is the hair color

yeah Crystal if anything did make me wish Naoko at least had them be reborn as normal people, they didn’t need to get with the girls or even do much but to let them exist would have been nice considering none of this was their fault (and they likely blame themselves anyway)

I’m gonna keep my headcanon that when Neo Queen Serenity and Endymion assume their thrones they revived the Shitennou and they spent their days as Chibi-Usa’s babysitters thank you (she makes Kunzite play horsey because she’s a princess and she fucking can)

the image of her cutting down Mamoru was more intense in the manga, but I guess Toei is good at toning down violence when they feel like it

this is the end

until they release the season three dub

hell they still haven’t released the Sailor Moon S dub to Hulu, apparently Viz is weird when it comes to how they handle their dubs. we have the cast for S, we know who the Outers will be played by but assuming they dubbed that season already they are withholding it at the moment. I know R is being released soon on blu-ray so once that’s out they’ll probably release S, but I don’t know when season three of Crystal will get its release. and after doing some research the SDC English dub is getting a similar treatment, people have said that the three episodes they dubbed back in 2014 were a test dub while others say they dubbed everything but are not going to release it to the public until perhaps after PH and BT are rereleased onto blu-ray (at the very least we know the blu-ray is coming). so that’s gonna be weird when I get to my Jojo viewing and I blame Viz for it.

also NQS that ring does not look like the ring Mamoru gave you in Stars so I’m gonna assume on their like 500th wedding anniversary he gave her a new one to match her silver and white aesthetic because he respects her commitment to this color palette

once again I think Toei pooled their animation budget towards the later episodes because this one looks good

also I never understood why NQS lost most of her powers

it just felt like a weird thing to have happen

luckily in this version Chibi-Moon is actually powerful, the gag of Pink Sugar Heart Attack being so weak in the 90s anime was funny but at the same time I thought it would have been nice to give her maybe a new attack that gets something done

also my video keeps buffering and its annoying

when you ignore the vocal distortion the way Death Phantom talks does a good job in showcasing why one of Steve Kramer’s biggest roles is Darkonda from Power Rangers, I just wish WIseman’s voice didn’t sound so kindly even though again I know that was done on purpose for a reason

“I am the pretty guardian trainee!” and today is her first day so try to be understanding

honestly I don’t blame Usagi for wanting to see NQS, I’d wanna see how I’m gonna look when I’m older too

I also see this as a good example of how NQS deep down is still Usagi because she’s the one who comes running to see her

so that was the dub for Sailor Moon Crystal and despite some voices for minor characters I’m happy with it. I still feel very special over the fact that I met Robbie Daymond and Johnny Yong Bosch this year and having experienced their work in the dub it makes me happier about it. I remember for the longest time I dreamed of Sailor Moon getting a remake closer to the manga and being dubbed over again and both felt like total pipe dreams because for years Toei just sat on this property. even if Crystal isn’t everything I wanted, I’m happy it exists. I’m happy its quality is rising with each season and even though we have to wait until 2018 for the Dream Arc just the fact that we’re getting that season and Stars feels great. now is such a great time to be a Sailor Moon fan. I remember what it was like before the 20th anniversary celebration, at Anime Boston you were lucky to find merchandise that wasn’t bootleg or fanmade. now there’s a surplus of stuff, I see so many wonderful cosplayers every year, and I also see new fans. I feel so happy seeing kids and teenagers get into it because it means this is fresh for them, this is them experiencing it for the first time and they won’t be subjected to the bad slang, mischaracterization, and homophobia from the old dub. I just find it so heartwarming to know the series is thriving because I love it so much and even if there’s things in it that are weird or don’t make sense, I will always go back to it. its that special.

so now we wait for season three and venture off to Victorian era London where a legend began, tune in next time for “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure”

in an attempt at maintaining suspense we have the last scene of the previous episode replayed for us and then the intro

obviously I know what’s coming, but don’t you love when anime do this?

I think I’m gonna miss Moon Pride when they eventually dub season three and I go through that again

whenever I read this in the manga I saw it as something happening so fast nobody had time to think, but eh anime like to slow down the tone in the same of tension even though sometimes they shouldn’t

its things like this that are actually why I tend to prefer reading manga to watching anime

oh my God Toei

this is an important scene and you didn’t even have Pluto be fully animated when she says “time! I command thee!”

what I mean is she is a static image with her mouth open and for such an important moment this laziness pisses me off

yes season three, but we are not watching season three

at least when she stops time she doesn’t make a weird sound effect like Dio

Pluto’s sacrifice always makes me sad, again I know things get better for her but when she did this she didn’t expect any of that to come her way so as far as she knew reincarnation wasn’t an option for her

I know some fans criticize really all versions of Sailor Moon for giving people reset buttons if you will (and yet no one gives a shit when DBZ breaks its own canon by creating loopholes to do this...) but given that rebirth is a strong theme within the series I don’t actually care

why does Endymion’s cape look lavender now but it looks white every other time?

I wonder who was tasked with watching the gate before Pluto, I suppose it would have been Chronos (but then where is Chronos, we know he’s her dad so he did exist)

THE OUTERS LIVED SUCH SHITTY EXISTENCES BEFORE THE INFINITY ARC

I feel like Diana hasn’t had that many lines, but Debi really comes through with what she’s got

is that why they colored it lavender this time? I swear the rest of the time it looks white

Crystal is weird when it comes to the use of nudity I’ve noticed, Chibi-Usa is nude here and the intro for season three shows her and Hotaru nude (neither is in a sexual context) but in season three instead of Hotaru’s spirit being presented in the nude like it was in the manga she has a slip

I don’t understand because if this was wanting to not depict child nudity despite it never being used for sexual purposes then they should be more consistent about it (especially when so many anime show young boys full frontal and I don’t just mean DB and DBZ here)

and yeah they aren’t doing the vocal distortion the Dic dub gave us, I understood why they did it but it got annoying fast

also can I say I’m happy we don’t have a Black Lady transformation like the 90s anime? if only for the fact that I think that transformation was pretty sexualized considering we’re watching a kid become an adult

Usagi just vaporized Saphir’s minions without actually attacking, its gorgeous

I always liked how they animated Venus’s awkward hair flip, like that’s reality

so hearing Johnny Yong Bosch voice Artemis is a little surreal because I can tell its him, but its at the same time very unlike how he voiced Ichigo or Vash or Kaneda or even how he voices Jonathan Joestar based on the clips I watched

and I mean that in a good way

I am pretty sure I said this when I posted the photo of my autograph from Johnny, but I didn’t even know he was playing Artemis until I saw the layout of prints we could purchase for him to sign (I was looking for one of Jonathan Joestar which they didn’t have surprisingly and then I went with Artemis once I saw it) since then I’ve been looking forward to hearing how he plays him

I know they don’t get her personality wrong per say, but this still feels like a key part of who she is and Naoko chose to show it this early on for a reason

so last night I discovered in Japan they hired Mamoru Miyano to voice Demande

for those who don’t know, Miyano voiced Light Yagami, Death the Kid, and Tamaki Suoh (his other credits include HXH, Free, YOI, Tokyo Ghoul, FMAB, and OPM) and I just found this worth noting because the man is crazy talented

I suppose I should also say a bit more on Mercer too, I like how he plays Demande and I think he’s infinitely better suited for this role than he was for Levi in AOT who sounded like he was talking in his sleep. I haven’t seen many clips of him as Jotaro and other than him saying his name kinda weird I don’t remember them well, but I plan on doing posts like this for Jojo later so that day will come

“I’m sorry Mamo, please forgive me” oh baby...

so this is a kinda controversial moment, I think this like the kiss after the royal ball is one of those things that might not have been seen as bad taste in the 90s but our opinion on these topics has evolved. I remember when this episode aired many people were upset because this romanticizes suicide and I do think that’s true on some level, Serenity’s suicide that was mentioned a few episodes back did the same thing. death and rebirth are recurring themes throughout the manga and this is one of the earliest examples of it and while the manner its presented to us doesn’t look its still something major from the manga that they could not skip over unfortunately

all I can really say is the rest of the manga doesn’t have these sorts of problems

“its not fair! this is wrong! why would fate give us new lives if it was just going to end like this all over again!?”

seriously its like Queen Metalia is having an orgasm

while I do think the later episodes this season are drawn well, I do think if they always animated in the way they animated season three the emotions in scenes like this would hit harder

like people are dying, but it just doesn’t quite have enough punch

I love these moments that acknowledge Usagi’s relationship with the girls and how she changed their lives

the fact that I’m revisiting this knowing how much better things got in season three helps too because even when the animation is the worst and they tweak things that puzzle me, I can still say they went above and beyond to correct the things fans had been criticizing them for. its a rare moment where Toei actually gave a shit.

I like how they’re using IVs on him, not only do they have driver’s ed in the Dark Kingdom they also have modern medicine

thinking of it now the anime really should have had the MamoUsa interaction on the bus be accurate to the manga because there Usagi looks at Mamoru wondering if he’s Tuxedo Mask, and he does the same to her

getting rid of that takes away is a bit of a shame since it shows that Usagi had these suspicions even if she dismisses them right away because oh my God no way ~*Tuxedo Mask*~ is this wise ass high school guy who wears Armani suits at three in the afternoon

I feel like I don’t say enough about Robbie Daymond, he’s a great pick for Mamoru and having gotten to meet him I can say he seems like a cool guy all his own so if you do go to a convention he’s attending by all means go get his autograph

also nice big ass TV there Mamoru

like having read the manga eight trillion times I always saw this as Usagi no longer denying her suspicions (and I get why she was in denial, Tuxedo Mask was her dream guy and Mamoru at the time was just some dude she kept running into) but because Crystal didn’t have that earlier scene of her thinking for a sec that he could be Tuxedo Mask it kinda makes her look a little dumb

and we never learn fucking shit about his childhood beyond this bit

nice to know that was never that important (kinda like how we don’t know about Endymion’s parents or Serenity’s father)

like what happened to him from the car crash to right now? who was taking care of him for ten years? how did he cope? where did he get the money for that big ass TV!?

 it fills me with joy that the new generation of Sailor Moon fans are spared things like the Negaverse or the Negaforce (yeah those were two separate entities believe it or not)

Queen Metalia is voiced by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn who was Motoko in GITS: Stand Alone Complex and she voices Dr. Maheswaran on Steven Universe

as you can see a common theme in Sailor Moon are glamorous female villains serving some shroud of evil

its still weird seeing Ami use a tablet

as flawed as season one is, I still appreciate them showing the girls interacting as actual girls

so yeah the watch/handkerchief moment was always a favorite of mine from the manga and I was so excited to see it in SMC since the old anime didn’t do it, and it looks like nothing special

the problem here is the composition and the quality of the animation, this should be romantic and inviting but it looks so basic

again I’m happy SMC got so much better because it means all the MamoUsa moments from the Dream Arc will be just as beautiful as they should be, but man was my patience tested in the time leading up to the Infinity Arc

Zoisite is probably the least intimidating of the Shitennou

I said the same thing during the shit show leading up to Rogue One’s release

that moment when your ex boy is threatening your BFF’s life, but he’s been brainwashed by boob lady and its kinda not his fault

the Shitennou’s lives suck in every version when you think about it

in the manga and Crystal they were loyal to their prince to a fault and it all went to shit, in the old anime none of them got a second chance even though that sack of shit Tomoe did (yeah I am always going to be pissed about this) and Nephrite was just starting to be a better person in that version not to mention Kunzite and Zoisite had genuine love for each other and when Zoi died Kunzite wasn’t the same

given that loyalty the Shitennou had to Endymion this Zoisite/Tuxedo Mask interaction makes me sad

also I can’t look at a close up of a clenched fist without thinking of Arthur

like Zoisite just attacked the person he swore fealty to and doesn’t even realize it, this is sad

here’s another thing this has over the old anime, in that anime Mamoru doesn’t figure out she’s Sailor Moon for himself she straight up transforms in front of him as he’s all “ooooooooooh”

its a minor thing I know, but its very clear that Mamoru wasn’t taken seriously by the staff of that anime at least during the first couple seasons so changes like this (and ya know making him a college student for no reason) feel like another dig at him

after all this stuff about Usagi assuming her role as leader in the end its Venus who’s the leader all along so

every time the animation isn’t good I just remind myself of season three and what that promises for the future seasons

and now I’m reminded of the Viz dub’s take on Usagi learning Tuxie’s identity in the old anime, its still funny

Sooooooooooooo........if I did recaps for the English dub of “Sailor Moon Crystal” would you guys be interested? I Phantom Menaced my way through season one and skipped season two when I had to come to terms with season one not living up to my expectations and then I watched season three and was thrilled to see they improved upon themselves. I haven’t seen much of the new dub beyond a couple episodes and clips, but I’d like to because what I’ve heard is good and since the classic series is so long and frankly looses focus too many times (admittedly I was always a bigger fan of the manga) I figured doing this for the SMC dub would be fun. Sound good?
