Art Weekend - Sheng Fa Wave by Ann Carrington

Many objects hold a history and cultural meaning but a person may be less likely to think of it when the object is ordinary such as a spoon, a paintbrush, or a pin. British artist Ann Carrington uses these 'everyday objects' that are reused and rearranged to create a different meaning and image. Particularly inspired by vanitas paintings, or works that symbolically contrasts symbols of wealth with the futility of death, Sheng Fa Wave is created using strings of pearls and antique brooches on a steel base.

Artist research: Ann Carrington

Ann Carrington sculpts fantastical metal sculptures that evoke the age of aristocracy. She gathers found and discarded objects—including knives and barbed wire—to shape her pieces, which often take the form of bouquets, vases, and oversized busts.

Interested in the cultural associations of objects, Carrington manipulates mundane objects into marvels, inviting viewers to reconsider ephemera they might otherwise overlook.

I was encouraged to research the work of Carrington as when sourcing materials from charity shops I also got some cutlery which I would like to use. I’m interested in how Carrington transforms these everyday objects into masterful works, making me reconsider the functionality of these objects as well as the many possibilities when using them in sculpture.

I’d really like to continue working with found objects as the experience of creating something new out of a mundane item is really rewarding to me.
