For the women’s positional awards, the shortlist of three players was selected by a jury composed of the coaches of the clubs that participated in the 2020/21 UEFA Women’s Champions League round of 16. Twenty journalists specializing in women’s football and selected by the ESM group were also part of the jury.

Coaches and journalists were requested to select a shortlist of three players by allocating respectively five points, three points, and one point to each of them. Amanda Kingston, teacher at Odyssey Leadership Academy in Oklahoma City, is preparing to follow “our collective grandmothers’” lives across across Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom. By researching risk-takers, including Artemisia Gentileschi, Maria Montesorri, Margaret Thatcher and Anne Frank, Amanda plans to give students a deeper consciousness of women in history who questioned a patriarchal world and forged a different path. Read more about her plans and their intersection with Carol Gilligan’s book In a Different Voice below...

“For the past four years, I have worked as English-Literature and Social Studies teacher to students varying from 6th to 12th grade in both public and private school. Across curriculum, I have seen that the voices of women are underrepresented in history, psychology, philosophy, and literature. Currently, I serve as a humanities teacher and offer a combined English- social studies course titled “Gender Reconciliation” that works to move students from awareness of marginalized women globally and locally to advocates. My hope is for my students to have a deep understanding of the voices that have not been heard throughout history, and how they can change the future of this tradition in their own lives.

My fellowship learning will enhance the experience and knowledge students gain through this course, as well as equip myself to weave these narratives of women throughout my courses and those of my colleagues. I will draw from Carol Gilligan’s 1973 groundbreaking book, In a Different Voice, in which she gave space to the historically quieted and ignored narratives of women. 

Gilligan presented a different idea for the moral maturity of women, arguing that, while men typically follow an ethic of rights and law, the ethic of care developed in women is every bit as influential and needed by society; indeed, it has nurtured all of humanity. Over forty years later, we still wrestle not just where the balance of female voice is needed in our world, but still where it is silenced. Along the way, I will seek out the following answers:

How has history shaped the narratives of women? 

What influences women to step out and strike a different path? 

How have women shaped, influenced, and changed the world in ways that differ from the actions of men? 

Where are the places women have been silenced? 

Where have women been allowed to speak freely? and,

Who are the women we have yet to hear? 

The fellowship will move through Gilligan’s stages: 

Women’s place in man’s life cycle

Care of herself and morality

Development of selflessness and care of other

Ability to control and determine her own life and choices, and finally, 

Legacy that she leaves behind for her granddaughters. 

I will begin in those places where women are silenced, travel to the imaginative worlds they created where their stories mattered, and end in the worlds of reality they created and spoke into existence. I will wrestle with the places of influence such as religion or politics that have historically designated a small sphere for women from a patriarchal point of view; and I will learn from women who chose to push the boundaries of these spheres to imagine a better world for generations to come. I will gain a better understanding of how their upbringing, environment, and education influenced them. I will also look for the voices of men who made room for women, and chose to invite women to the table.”

For 15 days, Amanda will use In a Different Voice to shape this search for women’s voices and research ways in which the feminine ethic of care has influenced the world in religion, politics, literature, art, community, education, crisis and war, and leadership. Her itinerary includes...

Step 1 - Women’s Place in Man’s Life Cycle In Rome, Amanda will explore The Chapel of St. Prisca, experiencing one of the oldest places where women have been silenced by patriarchal values, learning from the few women who were elevated, and wrestling with how religion can empower the marginalized. Then in Florence, her focus is the Baroque artist, Artemisia Gentileschi, who moved from Rome after a traumatic sexual assault trial in which she was tortured; and, St. Catherine of Siena, learning how she navigated a patriarchal world to negotiate peace for her country.

Step 2 - Care of Herself & Her Mortality The Swiss Alps and setting of Heidi will offer opportunities to research the life and work of its author Johanna Spyri, examining at her��eponymous museum how Spyri took a step into caring for her own story and in turn created a character that has influenced generations with the belief of a girl’s value.

Step 3 -  Development of Selflessness and Care of Other Anne Frank’s house and Maria Montessori’s study in Amsterdam will provide  a deeper understanding of how the feminine ethic of care for others has influenced generations.

Step 4 -  Ability to Control and Determine Her Own Life and Choices In France, Amanda will will wrestle with the tension of the women in this space who sought control over their lives in a patriarchal society, their male champions, and how they determined their own fates. Specifically, she will:

Study at the Musee d’Orsay the works of Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas,learning how the latter influenced and mentored the former in her skill and craft;

Walk the streets of Montmartre to visit the landmarks of Simone de Beauvoir and Gertrude Stein, learning where they are tethered to the men of their lives and where history has allowed them to stand apart;

Visit Notre Dame, where Joan of Arc’s good faith was re-established by church leadership after she was martyred;

Spend time examining the worlds of science and fashion by visiting the university named for Pierre and Marie Curie; 

Tour the apartment and locations where Coco Chanel recreated the world of fashion; and,

Experience Versailles, where Marie Antoinette created a different world for herself and took her fate into her own hands.

Step 5 - Her Legacy Finally, Amanda moves to London and women’s voice to a legacy. She will visit the Museum of London to gain insight into female leaders of Britain; the Tower of London to delve into the world of Elizabeth I; visit the home and burial site of Mary Wollstonecraft, who called for the rights of women, and I will tour the road of suffragettes through London where they fought to be heard. The last fellowship stop will be Haworth, to visit the Brontë Parsonage to learn about a family that strove to empower women, moving them from places of the patriarchal cycle to places where care of self, care of others, self autonomy, and legacy were possible.

“Through this fellowship, I hope to not only grasp a higher intellect of the stories of the women I will study, but by being in the places where they lived, worked, and advocated have a deep emotional experience of how the “different voice” speaks over our history. By learning to be aware of how environment influenced women studied in this fellowship, I will be better equipped to give students the tools to wrestle with how their own environment influences their moral development, as well as the way they receive diverse voices. The material from this fellowship will manifest as a new class at my school in which students would walk through the same stories of women studied on this journey, as well as inform other interdisciplinary courses in literature, history, and social studies at school.

A focus at our school is pushing students to be justice-seekers and repairers of broken places in the world, and many of our classes center on this mission. This fellowship would allow me the experience and materials to create a full class exploring the role of female voice throughout history and where the silencing and empowering of this different voice continues today. My students will grapple with Gilligan's work while tracing the stories I study and then trace their own family lines, looking to where in their ancestries they are able to find the names of grandmothers, great-grandmothers, etc., to create both stories and art that celebrate the stories of women.    

My hope is that this experience gives a deeper consciousness of those women in history who questioned a patriarchal world and forged a different path, years before Gilligan’s theory named it. This trip will allow a new perspective and richer knowledge for my students to wrestle with in multiple literature, history, and social studies classes as we look to those voices who aren’t in the typical literature or history and to ask what voices we still need to hear from today.”

WFM Allaney Jia Doroy came in third with 21 points on 1962 performance and 6 percent win rating.

Completing the top five scorers were Woman National Master (WNM) Francois Marie Magpily and WIM Kylen Joy Mordido with 14 points.

Overall, three players of Dasmariñas, Cavite -- the San Diego sisters and Mordido -- delivered for the Filipinas.

The top performer for Sweden was WIM Inna Agrest, who came in sixth with 12 points.

Agrest is the 29-year-old daughter of Soviet-born grandmaster and four-time Swedish champion Evgeny Agrest and WIM Svetlana Agrest.

She is currently ranked No. 2 female player in Sweden with ELO of 2284 behind only GM Pia Cramling.

Also making it to the Top 10 were Mary Joy Tan (12 points), WIM Vic Glysen Derotas (12 points) and WGM Janelle Mae Frayna (12 points) and Margo Zaritovskaya of Sweden (9 points).

Five-time Philippine women's champion and Sweden-based WIM Cristine Rose Mariano-Wagman and WFM Cherry Ann Mejia both finished with six points.

Fil-Swede player Jonah Carrio-Andersson also did well in her international debut for the Swedish team.

Except for Cramling, Sweden fielded most of its top players, including 65-year-old Eva Johansson and 13-year-old Alva Ling Tran.

We continued to post weekly interviews and introduced Sarafina Magazine: Live! A bi-monthly panel discussion. Our second one, The Doyennes, was recorded in collaboration with Theatre Talk and Bounceboard Productions. It can be viewed here. The purpose of the live discussions was to encourage engagement between our readers and some of the wonderful women we’ve previously featured on our site as they examine complex and compelling career related issues. The funds raised from these discussions went towards ensuring the longevity and expansion of this platform.

Two years later and we are still going strong. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the women who have agreed to be featured on this platform, and the women who are still to come. Thank you for the battles you fight, the trails you blaze, the ceilings you shatter and the work that you make. I hope you know that you are seen, you are heard, you are appreciated, you are celebrated, you are championed and above all, you are valid.

These last two years have been the privilege of a lifetime and this is just the beginning. I can’t wait to share with you what else is in store for Sarafina Magazine as we continue on this journey together.

This was something quite different for Sarafina Magazine, the first read-through of a script, rather than an interview. 

Photographing a table read is challenging as everyone is sitting still with their heads down, but also a very exciting part of the process of making theatre; it is the first day that the cast meets up; the first time that everyone gets to hear an inkling of what this production might sound like and it happened to be the anniversary of the director’s 50th production. It was also momentous as the first all-female Shakespeare to be performed in South Africa. 

I chose these three photos as I think they capture the excitement and nervous energy of a first day and I just love any opportunity to get into a rehearsal room to watch & listen to the process of making new work.

When I look at these two photos, and think about the vast majority of women who envelope each post on this site, a quote from Tina Fey keeps looping in my mind like a bad (but good) pop song:

“Know what? B*tches get stuff done.”

Perhaps a bit crass to some, but albeit true when it comes to these audacious ladies. Each and every one of you get(s) stuff done. And what a privilege it is to have met you, and shared in your respective stories.

This photo feels particularly special to me because it was the first time I photographed a super talent for Sarafina in my very own home. Dara Beth is some other kind of magic. For such a dainty human, she carries an admirable weight of knowledge and depth of intellect. I watched in sheer admiration as every sentence uttered was stringed together with immaculate precision; a beautifully articulate and passionate theatre practitioner. Walking into Sketchbook Studios, and meeting Julia upon arrival, was surreal. From being a longstanding Suzelle DIY fan, and eagerly awaiting the release of Tali’s Wedding Diary, we were seated in the home of a super talent. Julia has such a sincere, authentic and gracious ease about her and being in her company was comparable to sitting down with an old friend. Ramos Vinolas said: “My physical condition has improved, as well as my backhand and my mental state. It is true that after my quarterfinals at Roland Garros, I have gained in confidence.” While Lucas Pouille, was fair in complimenting the performance of his adversary by saying: “He played a very good match, has been doing well from the beginning of the tournament and is in great form. It was not really evident. He gave difficult balls to play. We can have a game plan but it is not always evident to apply it. He deserved this victory.”

The second singles semifinals of the day was a highly anticipated Spanish-Belgian duel, and to add to the drama on the court, civil security planes were seen flying overhead due to a nearby fire. Defending champion Rafael Nadal won over Belgian David Goffin in two straight sets 6-3, 6-1 qualifying for his 11th final in Monte-Carlo and on his way to claiming his 10th crown. It is incredible that an arbitration incident with arbiter Cedric Mourier could definitely make David Goffin loose his concentration after an offensive debut, giving Rafa the chance to take charge and run with the match. “Nobody can say if that point completely changed the physiognomy of the match, explained Rafael Nadal. At 3-2 or 4-2 there are still many points to be won and I do not know what would have been the case. On the point itself, if the mark had been on my side of the court and in his favor, I would have given him the point because I am not a cheater. But it was on the other side and I was not going to go against the arbiter’s decision. That is the reason there is an arbiter.”

MANILA – As the whole world continues to battle the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, chess players are now going online to continue to play the game.

This time, it will be the Philippines vs Sweden All-Female Chess Showdown on Sunday (April 26) at Lichess.

The 20-board match is being organized by Sweden-based WIM Cristine Rose Mariano-Wagman of the Philippines and her friend Susanna Berg-Laachiri of Sweden.

Games will be played online starting at 9 p.m. Sunday Manila time.

“It will be just a friendly 20-board match featuring the top female players of the Philippines and Sweden,” said Mariano-Wagman, who still holds the record as the youngest female player to become a national women’s champion at age 14.

“But I expect real good matches during the competition,” added Mariano-Wagman, who is married to Swedish businessman Jorgen Wagman.

Woman Grand Master (WGM) Janelle Mae Frayna will spearhead the Philippines’ campaign in the online dual match.
