I:  can  you  state  your  full  name,  age,  and  how  long  you’ve  been  living  at  santa  moenda,  for  the  record  ?

N:  while  the  camera  is  non-operational  and  the  room  empty,  nolan  sits  slouched  against  the  back  of  the  chair,  tapping  a  cigarette  against  his  leg  impatiently.  but  the  moment  the  lens  is  opened  and  the  interviewer  sits  down  across  from  him,  a  metamorphosis  occurs  and  he  sits  up,  his  smile  and  mannerism  indicative  of  someone  who’s  been  doing  this  for  years.  “  nolan  carusso-iannelli.  i’m  thirty  two,  and  i’ve  lived  at  santa  moenda  for  eight  years  now.  “ 

I:  let’s  start  at  the  beginning  :  where  were  you  born  ?  what  is  your  family  like  ?

N:  personal  interviews  are  the  worst  kind  of  interviews.  he  hates  them.  all  these  questions  that  he  doesn’t  want  to  answer,  about  his  life  and  his  family,  when  all  he  wants  to  do  is  talk  about  his  work.  his  lips  purse  into  a  tight,  forced  smile.  “  my  parents  are  anthony  and  scilla  caruso-iannelli    ──  you  might  recognize  their  names.  a  lot  of  people  do.    “  there’s  a  formality  in  the  way  he  says  it,  as  though  these  are  people  he’s  never  met  and  not  his  own  parents,  “  i  had  brothers,  too.  we  all  grew  up  in  a  fancy  home  in  the  upper-east  side  with  hedges  and  a  perfectly  trimmed  lawn,  done  by  professionals.  “  is  that  bitterness,  nolan  ?  would  say  the  headlines  if  this  were  a  public  interview  and  not  just  an  internal  questionnaire.  he’s  masking  it  well,  he  thinks,  under  layers  of  false  enthusiasm,  but  there  are  no  personal  anecdotes  about  his  childhood  he  feels  vulnerable  enough  to  share.  “  i  think  if  i  were  to  try  to  explain  each  and  every  one  of  them  to  you,  you  end  up  going  way  over  your  interview  time.  i  have  nothing  but  nice  things  to  say.  next  question  ?  “ 

I:  what  was  your  childhood  like  ?  

N:  oh.  it’s  worse  than  the  first  one.  nolan  searches  for  a  quick  but  well-crafted  answer  that  will  continue  to  play  up  the  facade  that  his  mother  has  carefully  curated  for  their  family  ──  how  they’re  nothing  but  the  standard  of  american  celebrity  perfection  ──  without  him  having  to  lie  through  his  teeth.  even  though  they’re  no  longer  on  speaking  terms  (  and  haven’t  been  for  months  ),  he’s  still  terrified  of  what  the  fallout  would  be  for  all  of  them  if  it  was  revealed  scilla’s  golden  boy  was  no  longer  calling  for  family  dinners.  rumours  have  a  habit  of  circulating  through  the  press.  “  i  was  really  blessed  to  be  given  a  lot  of  really  incredible  opportunities.  my  parents  being  who  they  are  afforded  me  a  lot  of  privileges,  ones  i  used  to  help  me  get  where  i  am.  ”  he  speaks  slowly.  each  word  practically  burns  on  his  tongue.  “  and  i’m  grateful  for  that.  i  can’t  complain.  “ 

I:  what  kind  of  kid  were  you  ?

N:  “  a  busy  one.  auditions,  events,  red  carpets,  you  know  the  drill.  “  nolan  doesn’t  want  to  explain  to  this  stranger  that  he’s  never  felt  like  he  was  a  kid.  from  the  moment  he  was  born,  his  mother  was  carefully  crafting  the  person  that  nolan  was  going  to  be  and  putting  that  person  out  on  display  in  front  of  the  cameras.  he  was  shuffled  from  place  to  place,  closer  to  her  sparkling  chanel  handbag  than  an  actual  child.  he’s  been  behaving  like  a  grown  up  since  he  learned  to  talk.  he’s  pretty  sure  he  raised  his  brothers,  keeping  an  eye  on  drew,  matty,  the  others,  trying  to  convince  them  that  they  need  to  clean  their  shoes  and  sit  up  straight  so  that  way  they  don’t  have  to  deal  with  mom’s  wrath…  ──  until  he  left  anyway.  nolan  tries  not  to  think  about  that.  in  fact,  he  tries  not  to  think  about  his  childhood  at  all,  blocking  it  out  like  a  bad  dream,  but  all  these  questions  are  forcing  a  lot  of  it  back  up  to  the  surface.  he  taps  his  fingers  rhythmically  against  the  arm  of  the  chair.  “  i  didn’t  have  the  most  typical  childhood  ;  i  don’t  know  if  i  even  knew  what  a  grass  stain  was  until  i  was  about  twenty.  “  everything  was  so  clinically  white  and  perfect.  how  much  he  hates  remembering.  still,  he  laughs  lightly.  “  but  there  were  good  moments.  there’s  always  good  moments.  “

I:  the  career  that  you  picked:  what  made  you  decide  to  go  in  that  direction  ?  how  do  you  like  it  ?

N:  nolan  finally  perks  up.  ah,  yes,  this  is  what  he’s  been  waiting  for.  he  loves  talking  about  film.  even  if  it  was  forced  on  him  at  a  young  age  as  an  attempt  to  try  and  bond  with  his  mostly-absent  father,  sitting  behind  a  camera  (  or  an  editing  screen  or  his  script-writing  software  )  is  the  one  place  nolan  feels  like  he’s  home.  “  well,  obviously,  my  dad  has  won  a  few  oscars.  “  it  sounds  like  a  brag,  but  that  isn’t  his  intention.  his  enthusiasm  is  now  genuine,  his  eyes  lighting  up  with  excitement.  “  so  i  was  introduced  to  the  industry  before  i  was  even  born.  some  kids,  i  guess,  want  to  get  as  far  away  from  what  their  parents  do  as  possible,  but  i  was  the  opposite.  i  was  that  kid  that  would  watch  every  single  bonus  feature  on  a  dvd  when  i  bought  it  and  then  also  went  online  and  read  the  whole  script  as  the  director  wrote  it.  i  was  really  drawn  to  how  movies  are  made,  and  what  the  people  making  them  were  trying  to  say  with  them.  couple  that  with  the  fact  that  i  was  always  a  storyteller,  and  you  have  a  perfect  recipe  for  someone  who  makes  good  movies.  i  didn’t  really  care,  y’know,  if  people  watched  them  or  if  they  were  popular…  ──  “  it’s  a  lie,  kind  of.  he  cared  because  his  mother  cared,  and  because  she  needed  him  to  be  successful,  he  needed  to  be  successful.  he’s  been  enjoying  his  craft  a  lot  more  since  he  shook  her  off.  “  i  just  wanted  to  make  something  that  maybe  others  would  see  and  identify  with.  “

N:  nolan  finds  it  difficult  to  hide  his  reaction  to  this  question,  sucking  his  teeth.  if  they  don’t  know  about  his  rocky  relationship  with  his  family,  then  they  don’t  know  about  the  moment  he  decided  to  leave  home.  he  can’t  tell  them  that  the  pressure  built  up  so  much  on  his  shoulders  he  was  certain  that  if  he  added  any  more,  his  whole  body  would  cave  in  underneath  him.  how  his  first  movie  was  a  success  and  yet  it  still  wasn’t  good  enough  ──  he  still  couldn’t  live  up  to  the  impossible  expectations  that  had  been  set  for  him.  he  was  pushing  him  to  the  brink  of  insanity  with  how  hard  he  was  trying,  and  so  one  day  he  just  stopped  ;  no  longer  willing  to  bend  himself  in  half  because  he  knew  he  was  going  to  break,  and  that  would  have  been  ugly  for  all  of  them.  he  wants  to  look  in  the  camera  and  tell  them  about  the  day  that  he  looked  scilla  caruso-iannelli  in  the  face  and  told  her  this  time  she  wasn’t  going  to  get  her  way,  and  if  she  wanted  to  continue  to  flaunt  her  sons’  collective  success  in  the  face  of  all  her  friends  then  she  would  let  him  go  and  leave  him  alone.  he  wants  to  acknowledge  the  guilt  that  has  built  up  over  time  when  he  thinks  about  his  younger  brothers,  who  were  definitely  too  young  at  the  time  to  understand  why  he  was  going  (  or  maybe  they  weren’t  ?  he  always  thought  they  were  smarter  than  their  parents  gave  them  credit  for.  )  instead,  he  smiles  earnestly,  “  you  never  forget  what  it’s  like  on  the  set  of  your  first  movie.  “  he  says  sweetly,  “  you  make  a  second  family  there,  and  it  sticks  with  you  forever,  both  as  an  artist  and  as  a  person.  “

N:  he  doesn’t  know  how  to  expain  that  santa  moenda  was  an  escape  without  explaining  that  he  wanted  to  go  somewhere  so  different  to  his  childhood  in  manhattan  that  he  wouldn’t  have  to  think  about  the  screaming  matches  that  took  place  there.  it’s  a  small,  one-bedroom  apartment  overlooking  the  sea  instead  of  an  empty  house  with  more  rooms  than  the  people  inside  of  it  could  ever  use  ;  it’s  a  tight-knit  community  of  neighbours  instead  of  a  lonely  home  on  the  hill  where  he’s  only  allowed  to  interact  with  the  friends  his  parents  deemed  acceptable  for  their  image.  when  he’s  locked  up  for  hours,  barely  sleeping  while  he  stares  bleary-eyed  at  his  dim  computer  screen,  it’s  the  sound  of  the  waves  and  the  chimes  that  he  wants  to  hear  instead  of  his  mother’s  shrill,  demanding  voice.  nolan  has  been  a  lot  of  places  and  he’s  certain  he  wouldn’t  leave  valpo  for  anywhere  else  ──  but  he  doesn’t  know  his  brothers  are  here  yet.  “  it’s  a  great  source  of  inspiration.  “  he  settles,  nodding  along  with  his  words,  thoughtfully.  “  anywhere  you  go  in  this  city  you  can  find  some  kind  of  story  waiting  to  be  told.  now,  if  you’ll  excuse  me,  “  he  abruptly  stands,  brushing  off  his  pants  and  gathering  up  his  things.  “  i  have  somewhere  to  be.  “

film nerd through and through. he is pretentious as hell because he was raised to be pretentious as hell. his movies are closer definitely those kind of oscar-bait independent-style films like aftersun, and i think he had 1 directoral debut and then one other movie that he's put out. he's working on a script for a third right now, but has some serious writer's block and hasn't been able to figure out why.

a nightowl and not really a people person. even though he knows how to be a people person, he gets really easily exhausted being around people because of the fact that he feels like he always needs to be turned on and charming them... he can't let his guard down because he's been trained to believe there will be consequences for that. instead he just tries to avoid people if he can help it.
