Tại khu hỏa táng, nơi ngọn lửa chỉ tạm tắt vào đêm khuya, những người thân phải chờ hàng tiếng đồng hồ để nói lời tiễn biệt. Cảnh hỏa thiêu được chụp ảnh, quay phim, thậm chí là phát sóng trực tiếp trên mạng xã hội.

Những hình ảnh này sẽ được gửi đến những người thân đang phải cách ly trên khắp Ấn Độ. Chúng thậm chí còn xuất hiện trên toàn bộ trang tin tức và báo chí thế giới, đưa bi kịch của Ấn Độ ra trước độc giả toàn cầu.

Kiệt sức vì hỏa thiêu

Virus Covid-19 lây lan quá nhanh tại Ấn Độ. Nước này liên tục ghi nhận hơn 400.000 ca mắc mới mỗi ngày. Không có nơi nào của đất nước nằm ngoài "cơn sóng thần" tàn khốc. Mỗi ngày có khoảng 300 người chết được ghi nhận chính thức tại New Delhi. Tuy nhiên, con số này được cho là chưa phản ánh đúng thực tế.

Jitender Singh Shunty, người sáng lập của một tổ chức hỏa táng tình nguyện Seemapuri, phía đông New Delhi, cho biết: "Trước khi đại dịch xảy ra, tôi nhận được 6 đến 8 thi thể mỗi ngày. Bây giờ, mỗi ngày tôi phải tổ chức lễ hỏa táng cho khoảng 100 thi thể".

Thông qua tổ chức Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal của mình, ông Shunty đã cung cấp dịch vụ hỏa táng miễn phí hoặc giá rẻ cho người nghèo trong suốt 25 năm. Khi nhu cầu tăng vọt, đội ngũ công nhân toàn thời gian của ông Shunty đã gặp muôn vàn khó khăn. Họ phải xây dựng thêm hàng chục giàn thiêu mới ở cánh đồng liền kề.

Công việc hàng ngày của ông Shunty là giúp di chuyển các thi thể và sắp xếp vị trí hỏa táng. Trong thời gian đại dịch xảy ra, ông phải thay áo bảo hộ, khẩu trang và găng tay hàng chục lần mỗi ngày. Vào ban đêm, ông ngủ trong ôtô bởi vợ và hai người con trai của ông đã mắc Covid-19. Nhân viên quản lý của khu hỏa táng đang được chăm sóc đặc biệt trong bệnh viện.

"Đội ngũ chúng tôi còn khoảng 16 người. Chúng tôi đang phải làm việc cả ngày lẫn đêm", ông nói. "Bây giờ mới là 8h sáng nhưng tôi nhận được 22 cuộc gọi báo nhận thi thể rồi".

Theo truyền thống của Ấn Độ giáo, hỏa táng là phương pháp thường xuyên được sử dụng. Họ tin rằng hỏa táng sẽ phá vỡ sự liên kết của linh hồn với cơ thể vật lý. Con trai cả sẽ dẫn đầu đoàn đưa tang và những người thân sẽ khiêng xác lên giàn thiêu. Một thầy tu đạo Hindu, hay còn được gọi là pandit, sẽ đọc những lời cầu nguyện cuối cùng trước khi ngọn lửa được thắp lên. Tro người quá cố sẽ được rải ở sông Hằng hoặc một dòng sông thiêng khác. Những người đưa tang sẽ tập trung tại nhà người đã mất để tưởng nhớ và tiến hành các nghi lễ cầu nguyện.

Các gia đình thường thu thập tro ngay lập tức nhằm tránh bị lẫn lộn. Ông Shunty cho biết tro vô thừa nhận được giữ lại tối đa hai tháng, sau đó sẽ được rải xuống sông Hằng.

Bên cạnh đó, đại dịch còn tước bỏ đi những nghi thức cuối cùng của người đã khuất và tước bỏ cả không gian riêng tư của người thân.

Theo truyền thống, họ hàng sẽ tụ họp để chia sẻ nỗi đau mất mát. Giờ đây, nỗi sợ lây nhiễm khiến hầu hết người thân phải tránh xa. Thậm chí, nhiều thi thể được hỏa thiêu mà không có ai bên cạnh.

Mittain Panani, một doanh nhân 46 tuổi, cho biết: "Các thành viên trong gia đình tôi thậm chí không thể chứng kiến những khoảnh khắc cuối cùng đó". Ông Panani và anh trai là hai người duy nhất tham dự trực tiếp lễ hỏa táng cha mình tại Mumbai. Mẹ ông vẫn đang phải nhập viện do mắc Covid-19.

"Dù bạn có tiền, có quyền, có ảnh hưởng thì bạn cũng không thể làm gì trong giây phút ấy. Tôi cảm thấy thực sự bất lực", ông buồn bã nói.

"Lửa bốc lên từ những giàn thiêu, người thân đeo khẩu trang, mặc đồ bảo hộ. Cảnh tượng giống như tận thế vậy", Dimple Kharbanda, một nhà sản xuất phim trở về New Delhi để tham dự nghi lễ hỏa thiêu của người cha quá cố nói.

Cô phải cầu xin những người thân, bao gồm cả người dì ruột ở bang lân cận, đừng đến Delhi vì nguy cơ lây nhiêm.

"Khi ai đó ở Ấn Độ qua đời, chúng tôi tụ họp lại và nói về họ, cuộc sống của họ, thói quen của họ và những điều tốt đẹp. Tuy nhiên, trong thời điểm này, chúng tôi thậm chí còn không thể làm được điều đó", Poonam Sikri, dì ruột của cô Kharbanda cho hay.

Thậm chí, điểm dừng chân cuối cùng cũng khiến họ tốn một khoản tương đối lớn: 25 USD vật liệu cho buổi cầu nguyện, 34 USD gỗ, 14 USD phí cho thầy tu pandit và 5 USD cho bộ đồ bảo hộ.

Gia đình ông Singh thậm chí không thể đến đưa tang. Cả mẹ, vợ, con gái và con trai ông đều nhiễm Covid-19. Ông Rawat lo sợ rằng mình cũng bị nhiễm bệnh trong giai đoạn đưa người chú đi cấp cứu.
