started looking into portraits of Anne Boleyn again and okay, VERY intrigued by the overpainted woman discovered by xray in the serpent portrait of Elizabeth I. just feels like there's a very good chance that that IS a contemporary portrait of Anne!!! It's hard to make out the full features since they're partially obscured by the overpainted portrait, but she has this like knowing enigmatic look in her eye, and a(n unfashionably) wider mouth, which Anne was described as having (and often not showing up in portriature, like the notorious NPG 668 has the fashionable rosebud mouth). Ofc, it may beg the question of, if contemporary portraits of Anne were destroyed, how did this one survive into Elizabeth's queendom to be painted over... but oh, how intriguing
