IVE GOTTA MAKE A WHOLE DAMN POST BC MY TAGS GOT CUT OFF
mina is a very cool character, and i mean that both like sincerely she is very cool, and also that she is what you think a cool anime character is when you're 14
she is also imo specifically the kind of gapmoe that male characters are allowed to be. she isn't a tsundere, she's a cool bitch who is the most powerful motherfucker here and knows it and also loves cats like the badboy with a soft side. and has a pet tiger (14 year old idea of cool)
but you see mina and you're like okay she's cool i like her, i understand her role in the story, but she wildly is not a person yet. she's not really a character. and that is intentional i think, like she's intended to be a tool in the story at the start! but it's also like okay cool woman but she's not there whats the point and then you meet kikoru and you think oh god. oh no. is this going to be what i think it is is she the powerful snobby girl thats worked hard but is just here for the protagonist to knock down a peg with his natural talent
but then you meet her, and she is completely and utterly human and is supposed to be loveable and interesting and is a girlboss in terms of skill and physicality but is such an immense girlfailure in terms of personality.
she is a loser she needs a hug she's been power of friendshipped she isn't a himesama she's a helpmesama she is once again allowed to be the same sort of gigapowered loser that only male characters are consistently allowed to be, the hero who is a clown but has the weight of the world on his shoulders and like you COULD read it as a 'skilled girl gets outshined by protagonist man with natural talent' thing and i would not blame you, i understand where you're coming from and frankly i don't want to give the author too much credit
but i think the defining factor to that scene is the lead up, and how clear its made that kafka also needs help. that he would not be here without the people standing by his side and supporting him (quite literally in the case of the reno). that nobody would be here, be their best, without the help of others.
it isn't 'naturally talented man usurps skilled woman because protagonist', it is saying 'no matter how strong you are, trying to support the weight of the world on your own will only make you buckle' and 'gods don't exist on their own' and 'you are never alone. there is always someone who can help.'
which makes me very excited for how mina will potentially develop because damn what is she if not a solitary god holding up the weight of the world.
