Lithuania Drabble
Maksim was caught, caught for being a Russian Spy who had infiltrated successfully into the Lithuanian Partisan group known as the Forest Brothers. Now he was forced into a room, closed cement surrounding him. All he saw was darkness, that was until a light clicked on... and that’s when he saw him. The polite, peaceful looking Lithuanian sitting at a wooden chair behind the table.
The Lithuanian’s hair was long and brown, tangled, dirty from fighting outside. His uniform had not a stain of blood on it, only mud and dirt.
“Have a seat.” The Lithuanian offered one of the politest smiles someone could muster. He didn’t seem dangerous... so being locked in here with this guy would probably be a piece of cake. “Please, it’s winter, it’s quite cold out there, isn’t it?”
Maksim did as he was asked and sat down. He wasn’t even handcuffed. Hah, these partisans really were a joke. Sure he may have been captured and stripped of his weapons but he was still trained in and to hand combat, and the Lithuanian on the other end of the table seemed about as harmless of a fly.
“Don’t worry, I’ve no weapons in here either.” The Lithuanian nodded, “I thought it’d be fair. After all, you’re only in here for a few simple reasons and I’m sure neither of us needs weapons.”
‘You will...’ The spy thought but kept a straight face. These ‘Forest Brothers’ were useless. They didn’t see the glory of the Soviet regime. Now he, this spy, was left to talk to one of their supposed leaders...? This leader looked like a total wimp. Maybe the weakest of the weak.
“So I am here for questioning?” The spy asked, presenting himself back as friendly. “What is it I should call you?”
The spy spoke Lithuanian. He’d been in the army for a while but most had known him and saw he hardly spoke with anyone. He blended in seamlessly.
“You can call me Maksim.” Maksim adjusted his clothes “So you are?”
The Lithuanian closed his eyes, “Vytas.”
“Okay, pleasure is all mine, Vytas.” He nodded, holding out his hand for a handshake. Maksim knew he was not just there to talk. He’d been arrested and now in questioning. In fact, there was something about the energy that ‘Vytas’ had that Maksim felt comfortable with. He’d seen Vytas a time or two out in the forest as well, noting he had been kind to the wildlife as he saw them in danger.
“So you know why you’re here, I'm sure,” Vytas stood up and gave a weak handshake to the Russian, “Your Lithuanian is impeccable, I must say.”
Maksim shrugged, “My parents grew up near the border, we lived in Wilno for some time, moved back to Moscow sometime later.” He spoke with confidence but knew to keep his guard up.
“Wilno. Beautiful place. I’ve spent quite a few years there my self...”
Maksim nodded in agreeance but kept his mouth shut after that.
“You’ve nothing to worry.” Vytas said as he went closer to Maksim, “I’m on your side.” He smiled. “Glory for a nation that has suffered against great terrors...”
Maksim was surprised. This leader, this strange, mysterious leader of this smaller partisan unit was too of his kind? He almost felt relieved, but couldn’t quite take it for sure. “Is this so?”
“Of course it is.” Vytas checked the doors to ensure they were locked, “As long as you continue to sit in this char.” Vytas’ soft eyes looked ever so harmless, “I will make sure for the rest of your life you will have at least the dignity to say you made it this far.”
Those words confused Maksim but before he could ask a question about what Vytas had meant, he was dead.
----
Vytas is just a name Lietuva picks for himself for this meeting and this meeting alone. He snaps the dude's neck when he least expects it, no hesitation, no struggle, just brute force after getting the enemy off guard for just a second.
