The Lumpen was the singing group of the Black Panther Party. Directly influenced by Brown’s tight grooves and performance style, “Free Bobby, Seize the Time” connected Seale’s plight to the Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision, which stated that Black people were “regarded as beings of an inferior order" with "no rights which the white man was bound to respect."
