What's that Cassowary thing Tomura keeps mentioning?

The Cassowary Deck is a handheld gaming console that features in a lot of my stories. It's somewhat similar to a Steam Deck, but there's one big difference: the Cassowary is pure emulator machine. Its name comes from the fact that it runs on the Emulator Operating System, or EmuOS. Emu -> OStrich -> Cassowary. It can play games from just about any extant console. Why is that legal? Doujinshi laws! Of course, that means that each unit is hand-made and stupidly expensive, but what else is All For One's money for?

(Yes I know that's not how Doujinshi laws really work, but let's just assume that the extreme focus on Heroes means that as long as you're fan-porting Mario Kart instead of Smash Grand Prix, the lawyers don't give a damn. Endeavor is a bigger cash cow than Bowser in this society.)

Just how what kind of games does Tomura have on his phone, anyway?

The entire GBA library on an emulator. All of it. Some GBC too. Those games are tiny, and you can already get 1TB microSD cards IRL. Why does Tomura hate sugary things?

During the flashbacks to life in the Shimura household, his grandfather offers him ohagi. Traditional Japanese sweets like red bean paste and mochi are sweet, but a bit less than Western ones. (At least as far as I know. I tried dango with anko back in high school, it wasn't particularly sweet.) We don't know how long AFO let Tomura wander around on the streets, but I personally think it was several days at least, just to make absolutely sure the despair set in, and when he finally collected his prize, Tomura was sitting next to a dumpster. If he tried to scavenge for food on his own, he probably got used to some pretty nasty flavors. I think he does like strong flavors now, but he prefers salt, pepper, ginger, wasabi, and that kind of thing.

Where did Lunch Rush and Snipe's names come from?

Michiba Rokusaburo and his eventual replacement Nakamura Koumei were stars on the show Iron Chef! As for Snipe, Murata is the name of the first service rifle the Japanese army ever produced for itself, after the man who invented it, Murata Tsuneyoshi. The given name Naoya comes from an Olympic sharpshooter.

Why is Otheon "more exotic" than Poland?

You mean other than being fictional? If we look at where it is on the map (the edge of the Celtic Sea), it's probably about level with Brest, France, 50-ish degrees North. But if we look at the architecture (the classic sandy plaster and red clay roof tiles) and the plant life (there are PALM TREES), frankly it comes across as more Mediterranean to me. It just doesn't make sense when you compare it to the climate in France on that latitude. I headcanon that the island that Otheon and Klayd occupy was created entirely by terraforming through the use of Quirks.

As for why Poland is exotic... Have you ever heard of Grzegorz Brzeczyszczykiewicz?

Are Tomura and Izuku autistic?

Most definitely. The scratching and the muttering have always struck me as autistic stimming behaviours, just to start with. Izuku's obsession with heroes, rewatching that video of All Might's debut repeatedly and his memetic headbanger nodding, and ten years worth of notebooks? That looks like a Special Interest. Tomura constantly framing things in video game terms, his exceedingly worn out wardrobe despite the budget AFO seems to have, the sheer diversity of his eventual friend group AKA the League, even his freakout at the USJ over things not going as he expected them to looks like a meltdown over disrupted routine. (My perspective on routine is that it's not just "dinner on Friday is always X", it's also the cancellation of specific plans. All Might was supposed to be at the USJ, it was written down on paper, it was an official plan, him not being there is as wrong as the restaurant that Friday dinner comes from being unexpectedly closed.)

Additionally, neurodivergence tends to run in families (for example most of my close maternal relatives are a bit odd, if too old to have been diagnosed as kids like I was), and they're both Shimuras.

That last Q/A kinda got away from me. Maybe I'll eventually do a separate post on the subject. Maybe. Eventually.
