The No Ones Wrap up Christmas Celebration and Roe Protestation on “A Christmas Voice (I Don’t Want to Bring You into this World)”
Christmas is supposed to be for giving. But the No Ones lament what has been taken away on “A Christmas Voice (I Don’t Want to Bring You into this World).”
Sleigh bells signal the holiday theme. Beatlesque harmonies and British Invasion-inspired arrangement betray their fandom. And Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Scott McCaughey (the Minus 5) and I Was King’s Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen and Frode Stromstad leave no doubt where they stand on social issues as they decry American gun worship, gaslighting and the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Maybe Mary didn’t have a choice/maybe Jesus didn’t have a voice/but we did/oh yeah, once we did/I don’t want to bring you into this world, the band sings in a manner that belies the number’s downer messaging.
It’s no holiday classic. Yet “A Christmas Voice (I Don’t Want to Bring You into this World)” does manage the difficult trick of threading the season with social commentary without employing too much cliché or being overly strident.
In that regard, it’s a minor Christmas miracle.

It's always a good day when we get a new release by Norway-based I Was A King. Frode Strømstad has been busy with side projects like Beachheads and Rider. He and his bandmate, Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen, also appeared on Yep Roc's excellent The No Ones album back in 2020.
People (myself included) often compare I Was A King to Teenage Fanclub (reminder: Norman Blake produced 2019's "Slow Century"). As with TFC, I Was A King pop-song mastery has not changed even if their music has mellowed a little over the years.
I'm assuming this is released on Coastal Town Recordings.

Colored Lights Colored Lights (4.37.0) (release date 22 September 2023)
Colored Lights is a Norwegian band that is essentially Frode Strømstad and whoever he is recording with under the moniker of Colored Lights. Frode Strømstad is predominantly known for the band I Was A King. He is also in The No Ones (another side project of Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck along with Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen, also of I Was A King).
Also in Colored Lights are the following Norwegians: Bård Ingebrigtsen (a producer), Frank "Tønes" Tønnesen, Ole Reidar Gudmestad (another member of I Was a King), and Tomas Pettersen. I discovered this band on God's Jukebox and to ensure I wasn't just being excitable, I opted to hear this entire album on bandcamp before I bought it. I didn't buy it on bandcamp, because it is a Norwegian import, but Jigsaw Records who are selling this on discogs for a reasonable price. For my money, this is everything that the new Teenage Fanclub album is not. (Hell, it's everything the new No Ones isn't.)
Above you see the album and the album cover. This is pressed on translucent orange, limited to 125 copies (the black is limited to 175 copies). You can see the two shots of the album color below. It looks bright orange in real life until you hold it to the sun...

The final two shots show you what the labels look like for both sides of the album.

RURAL TAPES #RuralTapes #SmugglerRecordings
RURAL TAPES is the moniker of the Norwegian producer and multi-instrumentalist Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen — the founding member of highly acclaimed bands such as I Was A King, Heroes & Zero — as well as the bi-continental collective The No Ones. Mathisen’s career has seen him receive multiple Norwegian Grammy nominations, tour Europe, and infiltrate the United States. On his new self-titled record,…

Stream The Debut Single From Jangle-Pop Supergroup The No Ones
The No Ones is a new supergroup formed by chance after I Was A King’s Frode Strømstad and Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen asked Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck to record overdubs on songs the pair was working on for a then-unspecified project. Those songs ended up sticking with McCaughey and Buck beyond the limited role they were initially expected to contribute, and soon enough the four members had formed…

My Best Evil Friend The No Ones (Yep Roc) (released 31 March 2023)
For those unaware, The No Ones are Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen and Frode Strømstad.  The latter two hail from Norway, the former two hail from the US and have seemingly worked together longer than Buck and his former band who made great inroads in music once upon a time.
This is the band’s second album (their first, The Great Lost No Ones Album came out in 2020, prior to that they released an EP in 2017 titled Sun Station).  Myself I wish they would release a physical copy of their Christmas single A Christmas Voice (I Don't Want To Bring You Into This World), an anti anti-abortion single.  Maybe when we can all control our own bodies it will come out as an antiquated hard-to-believe-we-ever-lived-like-that moment.
Anyhow, this new album is a love letter to record collections and unlike record collections of yesteryear, it is a bit complicated.  There is a 12 song CD out and then there is an 18 song double LP of the album.  I bought the double album and discovered that the bonus tracks are scattered throughout the album which means in later years someone will believe their CD version is the correct version just like someone will believe their LP is the correct version.  It is a limited edition first pressing edition but it is uncertain if that means the bonus tracks will disappear on subsequent pressings or if the colors of the vinyl will revert to black vinyl.  Modern record collecting has taken the step funny books took eons ago to pollute the landfills with multiple covers and foil trading cards and Issue #0 making everything so complicated and playing on the fears of those suffering from Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO). We much include this music collector since I still have two Scott McCoughey albums I’ve yet to hear one note of music from.  The last thing I’m sure I needed was this, the second No Ones album.  Anyhow, the six bonus tracks found on the album and not the CD are Set List, JED, All The Stupid Days, Solo In The End, Kick Out The Dwarf and Slowdown.
Above you see the album cover, the gatefold and the back of the album.  Below, you can see a close up of the hype sticker telling you who this band is comprised of.
Tumblr media
As was the case of their first album, this album contains plenty of guest stars ranging from Debbi Peterson (The Bangles), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) and Victor Krummenacher (Camper Van Beethoven).
Below you will find photos of the different color vinyl, followed by close ups of the labels on that particular colored album.  Album number one is on orange vinyl.

And album number two is on purple vinyl.  The photos follow the same course as the above set.

And just because I like the idea that this band recorded a single condemning the over turning of Roe v Wade and I want everyone to know I do not support the abortion ban even at my advanced age, here is the digital cover of that Christmas single I mentioned above.

You had me at I Was A King.  I’m sure many people who buy The No Ones “The Great Lost No Ones Album” are drawn by Peter Buck (R.E.M.) and Scott McCaughey (The Young Fresh Fellows, The Minus 5).  I was drawn by the presence of Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen and Frode Strømstad (I Was A King).
The first several songs really sound like I Was a King but with even stronger guitar work.  This isn’t simply a jangle-fest - the guitars rock hard.  In my opinion, the presence of I Was A King enhances Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey’s work.  Don’t worry, there are moments of Byrds-like jangle.
This is a true international affair.  Two band members in Portland, Oregon and two in Norway.  There are other guests including Darren Hanlon.  This is released on Yep Roc.  The first pressing comes on colored vinyl with a bonus 7″.
