I have been following graffiti for over two decades now, and over this linear timeline have observed how it evolved and changed. It was the symbol of aggravation, agitation and stunts. When I first came to NY, those wide juxtaposed fonts created with spray paints were the signs of urban decay. It warned me to move away quickly from the neighborHoods. The writings used to arrest my attention and I wondered about the artists' self expressions and their bold messages, not to mention some were vulgar too. These artists have their own communiques and missions. May be the illicit nature of their art drawn me too. These artists risk their lives, livelihood and spent sleepless nights, kicking off their testosterones to spread this wild art on fire. Even now if there is a tag on the wall or on the shutter door you can safely conclude that the building is going to come down soon. The transient nature of this art also takes my fancy. What is there today can vanish overnight, like life itself. Whitewashing leaves with the infinite possibility of recycling the city canvas for fresh new art. Thanks to many and few known graffiti artists, this art form with stylistic evolution has now spread across the world, once symbolizing decay today it stands for beautification and still warranting the core messages of the revolts and conveying their fights for millions of causes.
