Tracy Kostenbader is a visual and social artist who co-founded AnySquared as an artist collaborative in 2010 to develop art projects with others in rejection of an elitist view of art and institutions. Functioning on the basic premise of mutual aid and cooperation, Tracy has also helped build a unique organization and space in Chicago where people come from all over the city to participate and build projects together.

She transformed her home studio to make space for other artists where people can interact and produce art together. Tracy has been hosting AnySquared’s studio days more than a decade and mentors emerging artists to expand their ideas about how to create their work.

In AnySquared, she spearheads collaborations with a network of artists and groups and brings people together. She leads visual arts projects where participants are included in the process of designing and producing them. She creates arts programming, curates exhibitions, and nurtures others to also become arts organizers and make more challenging arts projects.

Tracy’s philosophy is rooted in collaboration. Her history of work with social justice campaigns has a profound effect on her ideas as an artist. Working together is the underpinning of AnySquared.

While producing collaborative projects, Tracy has maintained her own art practice. She explores personal and political themes with paintings, drawings, and digital images.

IG: @andreaalewise andreakaspryk.com Most of my paintings, drawings and prints tell a story, and in the art world these are called narrative paintings. My past interest and pursuit of writing and studying literature informs my desire to tell a story through images. Invariably, though not always, I tell my own personal story as a transgender person through my art.

My work is inspired by twentieth century modernist art movements and styles, such as expressionism, surrealism, and symbolism, and such painters as Max Beckmann, Giorgio de Chirico, and Edvard Munch. The figures and scenes in my paintings are often set in a natural and imagined, mythic world; in this regard, William Blake’s work is my model.

Regularly attending figure painting and figure drawing classes and drop-in sessions with a nude model are part of my practice and help me imagine the figures that I use in my imaginative paintings and prints.

Working in a sketch book to generate new images and ideas and on still life paintings to practice the use of value, color and composition are periodically also part of my art practice.

Figure painting and drawing, working out, and sometimes refining images and ideas in a sketchbook — these are also an ongoing aspect of my art practice. ____

Making Family Art Bags for the People!

Wednesday and Friday last week, AnySquared helped organize and pack up up about 200 art bags to be distributed to to families in Belmont Cragin during food distribution. We were invited by Zarana Patel of Logan Square Mutual Aid to stuff art materials and fun things along with them and Belmont Cragin Mutual Aid.

Thanks everyone who helped on packing days and donated art supplies plus more! Gratitude to Hairpin Arts Center for letting us use your giant space!

I am a recent graduate at DePaul University. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Although I did not minor in film or photography, I am well-versed in those types of mediums. I often go for the dissociative, nostalgic feeling when creating my artwork. That includes using film cameras, editing photos to look like film, and so on. I’ll use cameras from a couple decades ago to create those emotions. In my photos and short films, it feels like you are living in a dream, an alternate reality.

Sharing Some Project Logan Love at Against Da Fence!

September 12th was a great day! Against Da Fence was the last public event with the Project Logan walls standing. It was bittersweet as heavy machines are now chewing down the building’s bricks. Our outdoor, mini-art-festival was a celebration of the communities around Project Logan and included: art on the fence, sticker-making, painting on the wall, and art vending. We were also excited to open up the community mural wall for painting this time! Gratitude to the artists who shared work and painted on the walls. We are also thankful to each an every person who helped set up and take down! It take a team to pull this 1-day event together. Thanks DJ MOS DEF & the Intel Music Group for keeping everyone going, And, finally, a beautiful shout-out to the Renegades of Funk for bringing out the community to make their last marks on the walls!
