via Today Bharat TNM spoke to Dr Gummadi Anuradha about her journey to becoming assistant law professor at Osmania University, her work in safeguarding tribal rights and more. It’s been only three years since Dr Gummadi Anuradha, 33, began teaching at Osmania University’s College of Law in Hyderabad, but the assistant professor has already become a popular face at the institution. Born into a Koya family, an Adivasi tribal community in Tekulagudem in interior Khammam district, Anuradha is the first woman from the community to reach this position in the state. Besides teaching at the university, Anuradha has also been working with tribal students from the interiors of the state, assisting them with guidance in pursuing their higher education, counselling and materials they require. Anuradha believes that her background as a student from a state-run tribal welfare school, as well as a fierce activist of the Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU), has helped determine her current path. Though she considered becoming an IAS officer, she instead decided to follow her passion for legal studies. Anuradha's father, Gummadi Narsaiah is a well-known politician and a five-time MLA of the ST-reserved Yellandu Assembly constituency from CPI (ML) New Democracy. Narsaiah is known for his simplicity and active participation in the land-forest rights movement in the region. TNM spoke to Prof Gummadi Anuradha about her inspiring journey and her views on several issues. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity. Prof Anuradha, you have inspired many students, especially those from marginalised backgrounds who have just started university. How does it feel? If my journey is inspiring, it definitely makes me feel good. If we believe in hard work and readiness to engage, we will definitely be paid back one day, if not soon. Tell us about your journey. Where did you do your schooling and what inspired you to study law? My first two years of primary education happened in my village. In Class 3, I joined Tribal Welfare Residential School and College at Sudimalla, where I studied for 10 years, until my intermediate grade. Then I joined Government Degree College Yellandu for Arts. It was then that I found an interest in student activism. I started to associate with PDSU. I would observe the circumstances and conditions of people during my field visits. At that point, I thought studying law would enable me to work and advocate for community rights. So I gave the exam for a law degree and got into Osmania University. I did not look back until I finished by PhD in property rights of tribals. It is often said that Adivasi families are not interested in educating girl students or sending them to school. Has this changed now? Though Adivasis give equal priority to men and women, when it comes to education, many are reluctant to send girls to schools or colleges. This is because of fear and certain experiences, but things appear to be changing now, which is very good and much needed. There is often discrimination against SC and ST students in higher education due to their background and lack of fluency in English. Did you come across such incidents? I can’t say that I wasn’t subjected to such hostile environments, but I ignored such people and left it to the wisdom of the people. I was focused on what I wanted. Since I studied in Telugu medium until my undergraduate degree, I found it a bit difficult to understand, but some of my friends kept encouraging me and gave me tips on breaking down the material easily. There will be some people who discourage you, but I feel we should find alternative ways to utilise the available resources. It was confidence and a push from my family that helped me complete my LLB, MA, LLM and PhD. How much of an influence did your father have on you growing up? The circumstances that I come from have left a huge impact on me. Lack of education and healthcare made me think about how to look for change. Though my father was an MLA, we were never raised with any special attention. We went to government welfare schools as he always believed in practicing what he preached. I used to wonder why my father was always with the people. He is a source of inspiration for many like me. There is constant conflict between Adivasis and certain laws. We see Adivasi communities being forced to leave their roots in the name of development. What is your view on this? There are several laws for safeguarding the rights of tribals as guaranteed in the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, but in reality, there is a lot of contention and conflict when it comes to implementing them. Most of the time, the Adivasis are forced to leave or evicted for the sake of development projects. If the laws such as RoFR (The Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers / Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006. and PESA (The Provisions of the Panchayats (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 are not implemented properly, there is serious threat to the very existence of certain tribal groups. Being a faculty of law and a person who comes from a location where conflict is common, I understand the purpose of laws and the challenges that come in the course of implementing them. There should be a proactive attempt to create awareness among people about their rights. Do you think governments have been successful in understanding the concerns of marginalised communities? Our Constitution has given us the scope to amend and make changes on reasonable grounds for accommodating certain legislations. But if we look at recent amendments, we can understand that these changes are threatening the very purpose of certain welfare state policies, such as reservations. State and central governments are making rampant amendments to laws, which in turn affects the people. How does it feel to be the first ever Adivasi woman law professor, and what is your advice to students who aspire to achieve similar heights? I feel very happy about it. I can say that it is through the sacrifices of my parents. This itself is not an end, there is a lot that has to be done. Whoever we are, we should not step back when we fail. Education, through handwork, and by using opportunities will pave the way for us. Despite the many problems that plague the Adivasi society, the community is often heavily romanticised. What is your view on this? In this context, do Adivasi women face violence from Adivasi men? Yes, there is a sort of portrayal that hides the reality. There is violence against women in Adivasi societies, like any other society. But it is not on par with mainstream society. At least women among Adivasis have a say in decisions. We see retaliation for physical abuse in Adivasi groups and collective sharing of work and joy. There was no dowry harassment among Adivasis; it is the mainstream society's ill impact that is affecting Adivasis. Now, we are seeing such incidents of dowry harassment in certain places, mainly by families that have moved or living within mainstream society. What are you working on currently? What are your future goals? Writing articles for academic and regional media on different issues. Looking at different policies to understand how they will affect the vulnerable communities like SCs and STs. Meeting and counselling students, especially tribal girl students who are planning their higher education. I am helping in the way I can. They can perform brilliantly. All that they need is encouragement and a path to march on.

Kabir Singh, the already infamous Shahid Kapoor starrer that entered the two hundred crore club in just a few days of its release is spreading like an epidemic on social media. People have been taking sides based on the misogynistic content in the movie, and this includes the people of the industry as well. Even after multiple articles were written to criticise the movie to take a stand against such portrayal of relationships, there’s more waiting for this controversial movie and its team. Telugu/Tamil actress Samantha Akkineni and singer Chinmayi Sripaada lashed out at Sandeep Reddy, the director of the controversial movie, for glorifying abusive relationships. Now, the trolls are having a field day with Sandeep Reddy’s response.

The actress and the singer who are both known to have strong opinions took to the internet after watching Reddy’s interview with Film Companion’s Anupama Chopra. In the interview, he said, “If you don’t have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don’t see anything (love) there.”

Well, it’s not really surprising to hear this from the director of Kabir Singh after watching the movie, isn’t it? Now let’s take a look at how the comments by Samantha and Chinmayi ignited an ugly online spat within just hours after the interview.

Samantha shared an Instagram post on Sandeep Reddy’s interview with Anupama Chopra as her story, and she added “deeply disturbing” along with it. However, she was criticized by people saying that she had “double standards” because she appreciated Arjun Reddy and now she’s offended by the director’s comments. Also, they dug out movie scenes of Samantha getting slapped by a male actor to call her out as a pseudo-feminist.

Samantha slammed the hate comments and trolls with her epic reply— “Liking the film .. and disagreeing with a comment are two different things . I loved the story of one Arjun Reddy’ .. not the generalisation that love means having the liberty of slapping people around.” With her latest movie Oh Baby doing really well at the box office, Samantha is probably standing on a level that’s too high to hear the haters.

Chinmayi Sripaada, one of India’s most loved singers also took the clips of the Sandeep Reddy’s interview to Social media. She tweeted “If a man is deeply connected with you – He will NEVER LAY HIS HANDS ON YOU. He will NEVER slap you. He will NEVER TOUCH YOU without your consent. Women (and young boys) have been told for aeons that being beaten up is a sign of *Love* / *Discipline*. IT IS ABUSE!”

She posted a long thread on the same topic so as to make it clear that abuse is not love. “I am in love. My husband loves me to bits. He didn’t have to hit me to prove that he is. Women stay in abusive marriages because men beat them up and then help them heal from the wounds that should have NEVER been there. Kids grow up in homes like this” she said in another tweet. Many women shared their personal stories of dealing with an abusive partner with Chinmayi and she posted them to spread awareness about the horror that such relationships are.

And as expected, the supporters of Sandeep Reddy and his idea of “masculine” love didn’t let Chinamayi get away with her tweets. They dragged in movie references from ages ago and criticized her for not being true to her words.

It’s not just Samantha and Chinmayi who are expressing their disagreement with Reddy’s idea of love. His comments on love are clearly reflecting in Kabir Singh and the netizens who weren’t in favor of his ideology, lost it this time, after the interview. They slammed the director for justifying abuse in relationships on Twitter while the rest of the Twitterati took Reddy’s side.

“What an arrogant sexist prick this man #SandeepReddyVanga is! And insecure as hell. His film is a monstrous hit and yet he is rattled by what critics had to say. And no Mr. Vang’s, you do not call someone fat – that’s rude, offensive, inconsiderate and very politically incorrect”— Aseem Chhabra, a Twitterati expressed.

On the other hand, Reddy’s fans applauded his remarks about love and depiction of reality that he made during the interview. They appreciated his honesty and boldness to speak his mind without worrying about the criticism his movie is being slammed with. They also lashed out on Anupama Chopra for pointing out the dark side of the movie.

“They all fake feminists r playing smartly but public is not fool, they clapped, Laughed & applauded #Sanju I want to ask why? Coz the producer of #Sanju is Anupama’s Husband? It is also one Kind Of Nepotism & I support #SandeepReddyVanga #KabirSingh”- tweeted Tarun Sharma, an offended fan.

It’s surprising how even young girls support movies like Kabir Singh. With the kind of box office collection and fan following Sandeep Reddy and his movie is harnessing, we cannot stop wondering what exactly the idea of love is for the millions of people who actually like the movie. I am honoured and privileged that the following writers local, national and international have agreed to be interviewed by me. I gave the writers two options: an emailed list of questions or a more fluid interview via messenger.

The usual ground is covered about motivation, daily routines and work ethic, but some surprises too. Some of these poets you may know, others may be new to you. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do.

Alicja Maria Kuberska

awarded Polish poetess, novelist, journalist, editor.

In 2011 she published her first volume of poems entitled: The Glass Reality. Her second volume Analysis of Feelings, was published in 2012. The third collection Moments was published in English in 2014, both in Poland and in the USA. In 2014, she also published the novel – Virtual roses and volume of poems On the border of dream. Next year her volume entitled Girl in the Mirror was published in the UK and Love me, (Not ) my poem in the USA. In 2015 she also edited anthology entitled The Other Side of the Screen.

In 2016 she edited two volumes: Taste of Love ( USA), Thief of Dreams ( Poland) and international anthology entitled Love is like Air (USA).Next year she published volume in Polish entitled View From the Window. She edits a series of anthologies entitled Metaphor of Contemporary ( Poland)

Her poems have been published in numerous anthologies and magazines in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, the UK, Belgium, Bulgaria, Hungary, Albania, Spain, Turkey, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Israel, the USA, Canada, India, Italy, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Taiwan, South Africa, Zambia,Nigeria and Australia.

She won : distinction (2014) and medal (2015) on Nosside poetry competition in Italy, statuette in Lithuania (2015), medal of European Academy Science, Arts and Letters in France (2018)), award of Cultural Festival International “Tra le parole e l’ infinito” Italy (2018) She was also twice nominated to the Pushcart Prize in the USA.

Alicja Kuberska is a member of the Polish Writers Associations in Warsaw (Poland) and IWA Bogdani,(Albania). She is also a member of directors’ board of Soflay Literature Foundation (Pakistan), Our Poetry Archive (India). She is Polish Ambassador of Culture of The Inner Child Press (the USA) and she belongs to Editorial Advisory Board of Sahitya Anand (India).

The Interview

1. What inspired you to write poetry?

In the past I was more interested in my everyday life and career as a worker at a bank. A disappointment in my life changed my attitude and it caused, that poems had started to flow through my mind like a river of words. My poems were once just my dreams. Now poetry is a part of me. I like to read poems, especially written by the best poets of the world. I learn a lot from them though I have my own style now. Reading is the best workshop.

2. Who introduced you to poetry?

As a young person I was interested in business. I was a chief in a bank department. This occupation required a lot of time and effort. I was a very busy person in this period of my life. I changed my attitude when I realized that my life is too short to devote it to this career. Writing gives me pleasure. It is my passion. I started to write in 2008.In 2011 I showed my poems to Mrs Barbara Mazurkiewicz, the famous Polish poetess. She found them interesting and she arranged everything. Mr Kazimierz Linda (also a poet and a big friend of beginners) published them. Now I can help young poets. I pay my debt back.

3. How aware were you of the dominating presence of older poets?

I had never been aware of anybody. I write because I love to do it. I do not care about fame. I am grateful if somebody devotes his time to show me the weak points of my poems. I can concentrate on this verse and correct it. Older poets can help the younger ones. In my opinion everybody must learn all time.

4. What is your daily writing routine?

I write when I want to tell something important to my future readers. Volume is not a diary. I do not write every day. I think, that words carry emotions. It is easy to find out which poem is “ real” and which one is so called “paper poem”.

5. What motivates you to write?

I do not write every day. It would be senseless. I write when I want to tell something important to my future readers. Volume is not a diary. Personally I do not like poems about nothing or poems, which are miserable copies of famous ones.

6. What is your work ethic?

I think, that a good poem contains a novel in a few stanzas. The means of expression and principles are different too. There are no doubts that a novelist must write more than a poet. My process of writing poems looks like that: I write a poem and I “freeze“ it. That means – I write it in my computer and I forget about it. I return to it in a few days or months. I think I have to be more censorial. I read and correct it many times. It is easy to guess that I do not write many poems. In my opinion quality is more important than quantity in literature.

7. How do the writers you read when you were young influence you today?

I started to write as a mature person. I know what is important in my life now. The properly classified values are very important for me. Poetry is something more than a hobby – just a part of my perception of the world. It is very hard to explain. One word – poetry is a significant element of my everyday existence. I am Polish, so I learned a lot of from Polish poets. I like very much poems of Wisława Szymborska. She won the Nobel Prize in literature.

8. Who of today’s writers do you admire the most and why?

I like many, contemporary poets, but I do not have the favourite ones. I read a lot of poems ( I am editor of anthologies) but only a few works stopped my attention. There is a kind of “poetical flood” now. Many people write and they think their poems are perfect. Good poem must carry a kind of “emotion- energy”. Many poems are just “empty”. I am also a translator. I have been busy translating a volume of Turkish poet Mr Metin Cengiz lately. I found in his volume some very interesting works, which I liked very much. I translated poems of Albanian writer Mr Jeton Kelmendi, too. The poem about death of his father brought me to tears.

9. Why do you write, as opposed to doing anything else?

In one of Wisława Szymborska’s poems she wrote, I prefer the absurdity of writing poems / to the absurdity of not writing poems. That seems to summarize my attitude too. I am addicted to writing.

10. What would you say to someone who asked you “How do you become a writer?”

Everyone can be a poet. We can all observe this volcano of emotions when people fall in love. I never expected to be a poetess. It has just happened to me.

11. Tell me about the writing projects you have on at the moment.

I am currently working on several anthologies. Together with Izabela Zubko, we want to win the hearts of Ukrainian readers. Natalia Miżygórska and Margarita Szewernoga help us in this. Professor Dmytro Tchystiak (associate professor of the Department of Romance Philology at the Kiev University of Taras Shevchenko, International Secretary of Literature at the European Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters in Paris, coordinator of the series “Lettres europeennes” in the Paris publishing house “L’Harmattan”), whom I met at the award ceremony in Paris, plans to translate Polish poetry into French in 2019. I had the pleasure to send him the works of several Polish poets. We are working on another project in Telugu language, too. Mr Lanka Siva Rama Prasad undertook to translate poems and publish them in India. Mrs Joanna Kalinowska wants to bring the poetry of Poland and Italy closer together. Mrs Agnieszka Jarzębowska established cooperation on the poetic theme with Russia. We are currently at the initial stage of discussing this project.

I also translated a volume of Mrs Maria Miraglia from Italy. I plan to edit it. Meantime I am working on an anthology in Polish entitled Metafora Współczesności and an individual volume of Mrs Anna Czachorowska. I plan to edit my volume, too. Sometimes I feel like a spinner – I run from the spindle to the spindle and tie knotted threads. I am a very busy but happy person.

With the changing time, negative influence of use of technology and changing social order, when the safety and security issues of girls, women and especially adolescent girls are at risk in the urban slums, the area under the Bhubaneswar Town Centre District (BTCD) would make the girls empowered with self-defence techniques, so that they would feel more protected and safe. The stepping stone for the programme was laid today with the self-defence training program for adolescent girls from BTCD slums commencing today at Utkal Karate School in the city. Forty girls between 14 years and 25 years participated in today’s counselling programme. In total 10 batches with 32 members each will be trained for 10 days each in self defence training. The training will be held Utkal Karate School, founded by famed Martial Art trainer Hari Prasad Pattnaik. After the completion of the training, the participants will be given certificates along with a nominal stipend from BSCL under Socially Smart Programme. The program is also planning to have one session for each batch by an official from Police Department that would make the girls aware of some of the important initiatives being undertaken by the department to protect the rights of girls/women. This is a part of Socially Smart Project being undertaken by Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and UNFPA. Humara Bachpan Trust (HBT) is the implementing partner for the project for community mobilisation. The girls were selected by HBT after holding series of discussions with community members and important stakeholders of the slum. The participants of today’s counselling programme were attended by girls from Shantipalli Telugu Basti, Masjid Colony and Jagannath Basti. The training will be for two hours every day. The girls in today’s counselling session were quite impressed with the demo presented by national medallist in Karate and recent Gold medallist in Asian Power Lifting Championship, Anupama Swain, in her teens. Pattnaik and Anupama Swain demonstrated few standard self defence moves and shared tips with the participating girls. Expressing happiness at getting associated for such a noble initiative to train young girls from various slum localities in the city, Pattnaik said the institute will be providing the best of the trainers for these girls as they will require both mind training, physical training and fitness training. Utkal Karate School has designed a special curriculum for this training programme, which includes 40 major techniques, one mind training and one fitness training. The senior martial trainer further added that keeping in view their social backgrounds, initial few days of training might be bit challenging. However, at the end of the training process all the girls will gain immense self-confidence after learning the simple techniques. Babita Mallick (21) from Sahid Nagar Telugu Basti, who is pursuing B.Com from Utkal University in correspondence mode, said “I am doubly excited to undertake the training after hearing from the young Asian Power Lifting Gold medallist Anupama Swain.” Citing the issues like facing drunken people during commuting on the streets near slums, Babita exuded confidence that after training she would be able to ward off such dangers.
