dhjsjdks you're not out of the loop or anything. it's been around for so long, it’s just been swept under the rug. he brownfaced in an old movie. it's called the big wedding and he's portraying a colombian character. and i know that some ppl would say and had said in his defense that "oh colombian ppl are white!! he didn't do anything wrong!!" "have you all even been to colombia??"

i first found out from @heckate, and i do think the blog has been archived, but ik that megan is not a person who would start shit or ban ppl w/o proper reasoning and research. i also looked it up after seeing that post megan posted and i had to agree with her.

the role is for a sexy colombian man named alejandro, and he did get tan for that (he defo looked tanner than he usually does in that movie), ig to look more latin. idk. alejandro’s BIOLOGICAL family members are played by actual latine actresses, so i really don't see why they couldn't just hire an actual latin actor for the part instead of...ben if they're already doing that.

it's kinda...emma stone and tilda swinton, and scarjo, and catherine zeta jones are all prosecuted and banned by netizens for racebending and taking roles of colors in movies that are supposed to go to pocs but if it's the internet's sweetheart cishet male, ben barnes...it's okay? make it make sense!

im sure outside of this hes a lovely person but as a poc, i always feel sour every time a white actor takes the role that could've gone to pocs bc theyre are coded for pocs. like it's just....disheartening.

as a side note, i really wouldn't recommend watching this movie. the mom is portrayed as this super sexualised latina and often in the receiving end of sexual comments or lines or treatment. and the grandmother’s casted as the desexualised older catholic woman. 

there’s tons of comments and acts of racism thrown around in the movie (which alejandro calls out) bc the filmmakers want you to know that racism is bad!!! but they utilise a lily-white actor in brownface to send the message, so it just falls flat and conflicting at best.

p.s.:if u rp ben barnes, i won’t automatically hate you, that kind of bx is just stupid. my best friend still loves him and she actually would jokingly put a TW BEN BARNES for me wnv she sends me his gifs and we would just laugh about it. but i personally just dont like rping against this fc
