Brotherly Love

A/N: Cute and shitty Umbrella Academy fic. A really bad intro, but a cute tickle fight between Klaus, Diego, Luther, and Five.

It was a normal day in the Hargreeves house. Diego was messing with his knives, Klaus was hanging out with Ben, Luther was doing only God knows what, the girls were at Vanya's house having a sleepover, and Five was out in the living room reading. Klaus comes waltzing into the living room being rather loud.

"Would you shut up Klaus, I'm trying to read." Five says mildly irritated.

"And if I won't?" Klaus said smirking at the Five's annoyance.

"Maybe we should just go upstairs." Ben says slightly nervous.

"Then I guess I'll just have to make you." Five said smirking at his idea from his book. (While he was reading there was a small tickle fight scene, which have him a great way to make Klaus shut up.) Klaus made the mistake of singing as loud as he possibly could.

"I warned you." Five said teleporting behind Klaus and drilling his fingers into his hips sending Klaus into a fit of loud laughter.

"I told you," Ben sing-songed teasing Klaus.

"Shuuuuuuut up youuuuu biiiiiiitch."

"I didn't say anything." Five said confused but tickling him nonetheless.

"Neeeeevermiiiiiiind." Five just shrugged it off and moved down to Klaus' knees. He squeezed the pressure point right above the knee and Klaus actually shrieked getting the attention of his two siblings. They both come downstairs running and panicked at first, but smiling once they saw what was actually happening.

"Can we help?" Diego asked

"Nooooooooo you're noooooooot allowed." Despite Klaus' answer Luther grabbed his arms and put them under his knees and went for Klaus' worst spot, his neck. Luther ghosted just ghosted his fingers across his Klaus' neck and Klaus let out a blood curdling scream then fell into loud, heavy laughter.

"LUUUUUUUUTHEEEER STOOOOOOOOOOP!!!! AHHHHH I CAAAAAAANT BREATHE!" The boys stopped for about 5 minutes, still holding him down so he could catch his breath. Then started up again. Five was squeezing his knees with one hand, and with the other hand he was digging into Klaus' stomach. Diego had sat on Klaus' ankles and taken off his socks and shoes to start tickling the soles of his feet. And finally, Luther was giving a full fledged to Klaus' neck. Klaus' senses were overpowered. He was laughing so hard he couldn't even talk. He had to endure this torture for a full 10 minutes. After that he went into silent laughter so they let him up. Despite his exhaust he popped up and managed to land Luther onto his ass. Everyone was skeptical that Luther was even ticklish but they decided to try it anyways. Five went down to his feet, Klaus went to his neck, and Diego went to his torso.

"Hey, I just realized this is the first time we've tickled Luther since we were like 2." Klaus said with a devious smile on his face.

"Yeah, I don't even know where I'm most ticklish." Luther said not really fearing this experience.

"Well let's find out then, shall we?" Five said excited to make his brother laugh like Luther has done to him far to many times. Five started scribbling his fingers on Luther's sole. Luther giggled but didn't really mind the sensation. His neck wasn't much better, get just moved his head around when he giggled. Diego had tried his sides, his ribs, and his stomach. All of the places getting to same reaction, light giggling. There was only one place left to try, under his arms. Diego shoved his fingers under Luther's arms causing his arms to shoot down. He started laughing very loud. Diego stopped and motioned for Five to come up and hold down one of Luther's arms. Once everyone was securely using all their body weight and more to hold down Luther's arms Diego started again.

"WAIIIIIT, STOOOOOP, PLEASE!" Diego only tickled him for a little while longer before letting him go. Once everyone had stood up Luther grabbed Diego easily and threw him over his shoulder walked around with him for a bet and then gently putting him down where five and Klaus were. Everyone took their positions. Five went down to his feet, Klaus went to his torso, and Luther was holding his arms down. Luther was the first to start. He lightly wiggled his fingers under his arms causing him to lightly giggle.

"Wow Diego, you might be even more ticklish than I am," Klaus teased, smiling fondly when Diego's face went pink.

"Shuuuuuuut up!" Diego laughed loudly with the 20 fingers tickling him.

"Let's see what happens when you tickle his soles," Five said removing Diego's socks and shoes.

"Noooooooot theeerrrrree pleeeeeaase," Diego begged thrasjing everywhere. Five just ignored him and scribbled all of his fingers up and down Diego's 11 size feet; Diego went absolute ballistic.

"WAAAAAAAAIIIIT FIIIIIVE PLEEEEEAASE! DOOOOOON'T!" Everyone laughed at Diego then continued to torture him for a couple more minutes. After a few minutes they gave him a break.

"Alright Diego, I like to think of myself as a man of pity," Five says making everyone snicker. "So we'll only tickle you for 2 more minutes, if you let us tickle your toes, blow raspberries on your stomach, and tickle behind and on your ear. (Which if you didn't know, doing that gives the ticklee an odd itch type of feeling and it heightens your senses) Or we can tickle you for 15 minutes and do what we've been doing except I move to your knees. So what do you want to do?" Diego mumbled something inaudible.

“What was that, dear?” Klaus asked smirking.

“Well first of all, I hope all of you go to hell. Second, I said the first one.” Diego stated, his face turning red.

“And seeing as how you want us in hell so much, we may as well give them a reason to put us there. Let’s punish him a little, shall we guys?” Luther states giddy at the idea of getting to torture Diego. Diego was about to protest, but before he could the guys attacked. Everyone dug in driving Diego into hysterics. He had used all of his energy earlier, so he was too tired to fight back. All he could do was sit there and take it. After about five minutes everyone got off. Diego got up and walked over to the couch panting.

“You’re next,” Diego said pointing at Five. Five got a look of absolute panic in his eyes. He tried to teleport out of the room, but Klaus was prepared for this, drilling his fingers into Five’s hips causing him to lose focus and therefore rendering him unable to teleport. Klaus started wrestling him to the ground and after a few minutes of watching the squabble Luther and Diego decided to help. Everyone got positioned, Luther on top of his arms, as per usual. Diego at his feet, and Klaus at his torso. 

“Now if I remember correctly from when we were kids, you were the most ticklish person in the entire world. Let’s see of that’s still true.” Diego said scribbling his fingers all over Five’s soles, already having taken off his shoes. 

“IIIIIIIIII’MMMMM NOOOOOOOT TIIIIIIIIICKLIIIIIISH!” Five says squirming so  much Luther has trouble holding him down. 

“Mhm, sure. Well you’re laughing pretty hard, and you’re not ticklish, so what’s so funny?” Klaus asks going to town on Five’s ribs. By this point Five could only laugh and scream. He couldn’t get in enough air to make an actual sentence. Then Diego did the unthinkable, he got off of Five’s feet and walked up to his knees.

“DIIIIEEEEEGOOOOO, WHAAAAT AAAAAAARE YOUUUUUUU DOOOOOIINNNNNNG?” Five asked, now able to get words out with only two people tickling him. “PLLLLLLLLEEEEEAAAASSSE DOOOOOOON’T DOOOOOOO THIIIIIIIIIS!” 

“Do what exactly?”

“IIIIIIII DOOOOOOON’T WAAAAANT TOOOOO SAAAAAAYY”

“Well then I guess I’m just gonna have to do it, seeing as how I don’t know what not to do.” Diego said honing in on his knees.

“DIIEEEEEEEEGOOOOOOO, PLEEEEEEAAASSEE!”

“You’re gonna have to tell me what not to do then.”

“TIIIIIIICKLEEEE MYYYYYYYYY KNEEEEEEES!”

“If you insist.”

“YOOOOOOUUUUUUU MOOOOOOTHERFUUUUUUCKKER!” Five screamed out before Diego attacked. Diego just smiled a cheeky smile and lightly brushed his fingers over Five’s knees. Five squeaked then fell into silent laughter.

“He’s barely even touching you!” Klaus exclaimed blowing raspberries on his stomach. The guys continued until Five was blue in the face, then they let him up. Five just sat up on the floor still panting heavily.

“Still think you’re not ticklish?” Klaus asked

“Yes, I’m too old to be ticklish.”

“Well then I guess we’re just gonna have to show you how you’re still ticklish them.”

“No!”

“Then say you are”

“Fine, I’m ticklish.” Five  mumbled, barely audible. Diego laughed and pulled him into a headlock. 

“I love you kid.”

“I guess I love you guys too.” Five said smiling, but trying to hide it.

I'm not very hungry, so I make a bowl of Greek yogurt with granola and a little honey before I leave. 9:40 a.m. — I get to work a few minutes late and immediately make a coffee from the Keurig. Perhaps the yogurt wasn't as filling as I thought, because the coffee goes right through me and I am jittery AF. The most exciting email I receive is an invite to go into my boss' office to pick a name for Secret Santa. I'm excited that I pick out the name of a girl I know fairly well! I brainstorm what to buy for her, feeling grateful for the $20 limit. 1:30 p.m. — A new employee joins me for lunch, and we go downstairs with our lunches from home. I leave the office and take the subway to the Greenwich Village. I have a major pizza craving, so I stop into Joe's Pizza but it's cash only. Double ugh: I left my wad of babysitting cash on my bedside table. I withdraw $20 (with a $2.75 fee) from the ATM outside of Joe's, and eat the most delicious slice of cheese pizza ($3) I've had in a long time. $5.75 6:50 p.m. — I walk two blocks through the rain to meet my friend at a cool Belgian beer bar. We haven't seen each other in a few weeks, so after I order a beer (she's been there for a few minutes and already has one) we quickly catch up, commiserate about work, and brainstorm festive Christmas-y things to do together. At 7:30, we realize we're running late to our big event, so we ask for the check and split the bill. I insist on paying for half of “her” fries because I definitely ate half of them. $13 8:15 p.m. — We wait outside in the pouring rain for 30 minutes before finally being let into the movie theatre to see World of Tomorrow 2 , a short film by one of our favorite filmmakers! We are surrounded by fellow film nerds and it is glorious, and the Q A with the filmmaker is an added bonus. Well worth the $15 I spent on the ticket I ordered two weeks ago. After the movie, we split ways and I take the subway home, chat with my roommate, and get ready for bed. Daily Total: $18.75 Day Four 7 a.m. — I'm up earlier than usual today because I have a pre-work coffee meeting at 8. I roll out of bed, change into appropriate attire, and eat a banana. Somehow this takes me 55 minutes, and I realize I'm going to be a few minutes late. So, I power walk up the street to the café where I'm meeting someone for the first time in two years; he messaged me on LinkedIn last week asking to catch up. Networking is so awkward, but it's vital in my industry. 8:15 a.m. — He is running a few minutes late, so I buy myself a coffee to end the awkward stare down I'm getting from the barista. $2.75 9:15 a.m. — The meeting goes really well! He basically tried to offer me a job interview, which was flattering. I would have liked to stay longer but I'm running quite late to work, so I head out and take the subway into Brooklyn. I eat lunch by myself today, and it's my last Trader Joe's salad of the week. I take my full hour, then come back upstairs with just a few emails to answer. I make a cup of tea in the office kitchen, and get back to work, which consists of emailing a few people and FedExing a couple Blu-rays. 6 p.m. — The workday is done! I take the subway into Manhattan and walk through Washington Square Park to watch the Christmas tree lighting. About 200 people are crowded around the giant tree, singing carols along with a brass band. I stay for about 10 minutes, reveling in holiday cheer, before walking to a bookstore on a mission to buy a Secret Santa gift. On my way home, I stop in Pret A Manger to buy a sandwich, as I don't have any lunch food at home. $8.15 2 p.m. — After a 30-minute work conference call, I take the bags I packed this morning and walk to the subway to get to Penn Station. I get there with about 20 minutes to spare before my train, and it's a nice change from frantically running through the station. I buy a one-way NJ Transit ticket to Philadelphia. Off to see my big sister! $26 5:30 p.m. — I get to Philadelphia, and per my sister's instructions, take a trolley to meet her at a restaurant. The trolley ticket is $2.50. The trolley system is so confusing compared to the New York subway; there is no way to know where you are because they don't announce each stop! I somehow manage to get off the trolley at the right stop, and walk across the street to meet my sister and her coworkers for dinner. Two glasses of wine and a few slices of pizza later (the four of us split the bill — $29.56 each, including tip), she and I walk back to her place. $32.06 Daily Total: $99.33 Day Seven 9 a.m. — We sleep in a bit and wake up to a winter wonderland! We each have a bowl of cereal in my sister's kitchen, get dressed, and decide to walk through the snow to get coffee. When we get to her favorite coffee place, there are no seats available; looks like everyone in the neighborhood also wanted a picturesque morning! We walk a few more blocks to a vegan doughnut shop and each get a coffee. I also order a cinnamon sugar doughnut, and she orders a lemon raspberry. I pay for both of us. $9.18 10 a.m. — We make a few stops on the walk back to my sister's place, including to a little bookstore, a pet store (sooo tempted to adopt one of the kittens in the window), and her food co-op. She buys groceries so we can make lunch, and insists on paying. 2 p.m. — After we make lunch (rice, beans, and veggie stir fry) and eat a few too many of the cookies my parents gave us, we walk around the corner to watch a free choral performance in the outdoor pavilion of a gardening store. Super cool! 6 p.m. — We spend a few hours warming up in her apartment, then take the trolley ($2.50) into downtown Philly to check out a huge ice rink and winter lodge set up by the river. It is so beautiful and festive, and “All I Want For Christmas Is You” plays about three times in a row. I am in heaven. We warm up next to a fire, then walk into the most Christmas-y looking pub we can find for dinner. Feeling a cold coming on, I order a hot toddy (sister does, too) and am shocked at the low price of $7.50. “Welcome to Philly!” my loving sister taunts. I get a hamburger, she gets fish and chips, and we each get a drink called “Festive Fashioned” after our hot toddies. This spin on the Old Fashioned is a price I'm more used to, $11. Totally worth it. We split the bill. $40.70 8 p.m. — I need to buy another ride on the trolley to get home, and my sister suggests I buy two trolley tokens for $4 instead of one trolley card for $2.50 in case we ride the trolley tomorrow. I'll say it again: the Philly subway/trolley system is confusing. $4 9 p.m. — We get home after an extraordinarily snowy and festive day, and call it a night — happy to be cozy and warm together. Inside the High-Drama World of Youth Competition Dance

The second time I met Angelina Velardi she had just lost a baby tooth. It left a gaping hole in her smile, but she liked how it looked: “Now if I show the judges I’m mature, they’ll be more impressed,” she said, happily. Angelina is a 12-year-old competitive dancer, and canny to the ways in which technical acuity and preadolescent pliability can be combined to her advantage. She started competitive dancing less than three years ago.

On a Friday afternoon last spring, Angelina and her teammates from Prestige Academy of Dance arrived at a technical high school in Sparta, N.J., for the Imagine National Dance Challenge, a children’s dance competition. Each girl wore her black uniform and sported the team hairstyle, a low bun gleaming with hair spray. Dina Crupi, Prestige Academy’s 25-year-old studio owner and competition-team director, had chosen the hairstyle for its versatility: It allowed various headpieces and hats to be put on and removed with ease. Crupi still had nightmares about last year’s style, a too-complex choice involving a pouf encircled by braids. While she stood sipping coffee, the girls warmed up around her, brushing their fingers against the athletic-gray lobby walls for balance. With their small heads, shellacked scalps and long necks, the teammates looked elegant and creaturely, like a row of lizards.

This was Prestige’s fifth competition this season, and its core team of 52 dancers would enter over 20 dance pieces over the course of the three-day competition. Angelina was a member of the preteen team, but there were also older teenagers and girls as young as 4 who were there to compete. The competition accepted dancers as old as 19, but the enterprise skewed much younger. At the dancewear booths ringing the lobby, the dance tops for sale were the size of dinner napkins.

In Prestige’s dressing room, a classroom off a back hallway, Angelina donned her first costume of the day, a green one-piece with a choker neckline. She rubbed a deodorantlike stick (affectionately referred to as “butt glue”) on her upper thighs to make the one-piece stay in place. MaryAnn, Angelina’s mother, filled in her daughter’s eyebrows with dark pencil. An adult face emerged from Angelina’s little-girl one. She already had on fake eyelashes: She had fallen asleep in the car on the way to Sparta, so MaryAnn parked outside the competition and applied them without waking her, gluing individual lashes to her lids as she slept.

Angelina went into the hallway and did a few pirouettes. Crupi walked slowly past, appraising the girls’ makeup and watching them for mistakes. She was wearing heavy eyeliner, too, and an all-black outfit to match her students’. They grew tense under her gaze, glancing at her for approval after each trick. “You’re letting your rib cage open,” Crupi said finally to Angelina, miming a puffed-up chest. She gathered the team for a last once-over. “Is everyone ready?” she asked. “Everyone sprayed nicely?” Some of the girls had gotten together earlier in the week to get spray tans, and they were an identical tawny color, like Easter eggs dipped in the same dye. The girls nodded. Crupi wished them a curt good luck and departed for the front of the theater.

Angelina loved her teammates, but before dancing she preferred to be alone. She practiced her turns again in the dim backstage light: eight pirouettes, then five. She moved so noiselessly that it was easy not to see her at all; when she dropped to the floor and assumed a plank position, I wondered for a second where she had gone. She popped up again and grinned at me, shaking her hands and feet vigorously to help rid herself of nerves. “I just need to zone out,” she told me. “People get in my head.”

“It was never like this when I was a kid,” Jared Grimes, 34, a prominent tap dancer and competition judge, told me. “These kids are like gladiators. The dominating, the mind games, the winning. It’s all strategic.” Grimes teaches at New York City Dance Alliance, a highly regarded competition company, and he routinely judges over 500 dance numbers in a single weekend. N.Y.C.D.A. travels to 24 cities per year. Each city has its own personality, he said. “Boston kids are a little bit more reserved, very careful, very guarded — details, details. Nashville is like, ‘We’re having a good time.’ ”

The competition-dance format is straightforward. On weekends, for-profit traveling companies host competitions for children in convention centers and hotels. Dance schools bring their students to compete. Judges, usually dance teachers or choreographers, score each piece on the spot, often out of 100 points. At the end of the day, winners receive titles and trophies. Sometimes there are small cash awards or gift cards.

The children who enter these competitions train up to 30 hours per week, primarily on weekends and after school. Because children must compete in many styles — hip-hop, ballet, jazz and others — versatility is essential, and training can be rigorous to the point of extremity. Each competition bestows its own regional titles, and bigger events also offer national ones. Studios choose which competitions to attend based on careful consideration of cost, quality and competitiveness. Some students compete nearly every weekend during the season, which runs approximately September to July, and train at intensives and classes during the rest of the year.

There are no official figures about how many children are involved in competition dance nationwide, but the number of national competitions has ballooned into the hundreds since the 1980s. In the late 1970s, one of the first of the organizing companies, Showstopper, held competitions out of the trunk of a station wagon. Last year, 52,000 dancers participated in Showstopper, and its touring fleet included a semi truck that transported trophies alone.

A turning point came in 2011, when Lifetime aired a reality show called “Dance Moms.” A number of dance-themed reality shows premiered in the previous decade — “So You Think You Can Dance,” “Dancing With the Stars” — but “Dance Moms” focused on relatable kids who aspired to be famous for their dancing, not adults. The show followed a Pittsburgh competition team at the Abby Lee Dance Company, reporting breathlessly on the wins and losses suffered by its team of preteens. “Dance Moms” emphasized drink-sloshing and hair-pulling by the team’s parents rather than the particulars of the students’ lives, but it made several young dancers, particularly Maddie Ziegler, now 15, into minor celebrities. The competition community almost unanimously considers the show in poor taste, but it normalized the idea of child stardom among competition-dance students, teachers and parents. When she was 11, Ziegler was cast by the musician Sia in a music video for her song “Chandelier.” The video featured Ziegler as the sole performer, doing pirouettes, splits and kicks with a series of fierce facial expressions.

When I started dancing professionally four years ago, dancers I worked with would sometimes make one another laugh in rehearsal by whipping out old competition moves: preposterously wide smiles, coquettish shoulder tilts. As adults looking for dance jobs in New York, they had hurried to leave these overblown faces behind, like a newscaster trying to scrub herself of a regional accent. They wanted to be modern dancers, and maximal facial expressions aren’t stylish in the world of concert dance, which is still the purview of college dance programs and conservatories. When competition dancers enter college or seek jobs in the modern dance world, they tend to tone down their “fire,” as one former competition dancer put it, to fit in. She was a national-competition titleholder while in high school, but now she treated her competition past like a secret. She wanted to join a modern dance company, and competition dance is often considered better suited to music videos, concert tours or cruise ships. She felt that some of the companies she wanted to join, which performed exclusively in theaters, looked askance at her background. As mainstream as it has become, competition dance is still a distinct dance subculture, revolving around pop music, hard-hitting choreography and young female adherents. “It’s a different world,” Melinda Wandel, a mother of an 11-year-old competition dancer, told me.

Many competition dancers are drawn in by social media, where popular competition dancers and teachers have millions of followers. Others learn about it from adults. When teachers spot promising students in their studio’s drop-in classes, they encourage talented kids to join the studio’s team. Many children start competing as young as 5 or 6. Angelina first learned about competition dance on Instagram. She was a naturally gifted athlete who played softball, but when she saw pictures of competition dancers on a dancer friend’s feed, she felt the pull of competition glow more brightly in her than it ever had for sports. “I wanted to be like that,” she told me. “Because I knew it wasn’t easy.”

Angelina loved that competition dance was not only athletic but also beautiful. She liked dressing up. “There’s definitely a pageant component to it, ” Grimes says. Fake eyelashes, hair spray and crystals are de rigueur; Angelina’s first few dances required fishnets. Some parents find the pageantry bewildering — “It sucks you right in,” Wandel told me — but their daughters, and some sons, treat their jeweled headpieces and Vaselined teeth like armor. “We give her the choice,” Wandel said. “You can skip class and go to the birthday party. But she’d rather die. She’d live at the studio if she could.”

Dancers typically don’t win cash for competing, and they pay to enter competitions. Most participants are white; the few predominantly black studios, like DanceMakers of Atlanta, on the city’s South Side, know their students will be among the few dancers of color at most competitions they attend. Despite its cost — the families at Crupi’s studio spend up to $25,000 per year per child on costumes, lessons and travel to out-of-town meets — competition dance isn’t solely for wealthy families. One mother told me that she ate ramen to afford as many lessons as possible.

“It’s like they’re training these girls for the Olympics,” Grimes told me. “It’s muscles on muscles on muscles.” In the 1990s, a triple pirouette was considered impressive on the competition circuit. Now 10-year-olds can do eight or nine. The official record, set in 2013, is held by a competitive dancer named Sophia Lucia, who did 55 turns in a row without stopping when she was 10.

Despite the emphasis on technical tricks, there’s something marvelously elusive about competition dance’s definition of success. Dance is an art form: It’s difficult to articulate how you know that one person is better than someone else. Judges grade dancers according to commonly held professional criteria — “I look at how precise they are, how their musicality is,” the choreographer, teacher and competition judge Suzi Taylor told me — but selecting winners involves assigning favorites beyond point value. “You look at how they affected you,” Taylor told me. “How that piece stood out beyond all the other pieces that were shown.”

The opacity of judges’ criteria is part of the form’s appeal. Children know that they are always being watched: Every cross word in the hallway or eyebrow quiver of effort onstage will contribute to a judge’s assessment of a favorite. “It’s like an audition,” Grimes told me. There’s a mystery to winning a dance competition, which makes winning all the more intense. Unlike in sports, when a competition dancer wins, she comes away with the intoxicating knowledge that she is not just good, but also liked.

At one competition I attended last summer at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Connecticut, multiple women came armed with tissues, which they held ready in their laps before the dances began. I sat beside them in the over-air-conditioned room, feeling a little smug — I would not be needing a tissue! But when the lights dimmed and the first dance started, I suddenly felt overwhelmed. Alone onstage was a single blond preteen girl surrounded by lights; farther out, it was completely dark. It was like seeing a rare animal in the wild; I wanted to grab someone’s arm. Her skill was both alarming — her limbs seemed to bend bonelessly, as if she were a doll — and, to my surprise, moving. She didn’t look cute. She looked vulnerable and strong, sweating hard, eyes blazing. Although she was a child striving for the performance of an adult, only unaffected determination shone through. Despite the makeup and stage lights, she looked like herself.

When the announcer for Imagine National Dance Challenge called Angelina’s entry number and the title of her solo, “Ideas for Strings,” she walked onstage and lowered herself into a split in the middle of the floor. At her music cue, Angelina opened her arms wide and slid up into a low crouch, then spun around into a lunge. Her teammates gathered in the wings to watch. During her turn section, they counted her pirouettes. “Was that six or five?” her 13-year-old friend Tiffany Benevenga wondered.

Suddenly, the group recoiled and stiffened. I wondered if Angelina had made a mistake. “What happened?” I asked another teammate, Annalise Hofman, who was also 13 and often watched her friends dance with a stern look on her face. Annalise made a gesture of supplication, raising her hands into the air. “Oh,” Tiffany said. “Angelina is just really good.”

Angelina finished and scampered offstage. The dance was only three minutes long, but it drained her. She put her hands on her knees and panted. The other girls reached out to brush her back and shoulders with their hands as if touching her brought good luck. “Good job,” they murmured one by one.

Angelina wasn’t sold. “If I don’t do it perfect, I get really mad,” she told me. To her, every performance presented opportunities for mistakes — errors she couldn’t feel, unnameable dips in quality. She was like a veteran rock star, who, having produced many hits, worries that her current work isn’t measuring up and that the yes-men in her circle aren’t telling her. She smiled absently at her friends, then sidled over to where I stood. “Was it good?” she asked me. I told her that it was. “What was the worst part?” she asked.

The evening crawled by in two-minute increments, long stretches of boredom punctuated by strong emotion. The girls ate ravenously at dinnertime, lifting chicken tenders gently to their mouths to avoid getting spots on their costumes. Between numbers, the girls Snapchatted one another while on opposite sides of the theater, or stood together so closely when speaking that they barely moved their lips. Every once in a while they clustered to scrutinize a dancer from another team while she performed. If she was good, they’d nod at one another contemplatively or raise an eyebrow. But none of the other local schools inspired much fear in the Prestige team, who were confident competitors. They had heard rumors, however, that at their next competition, an event called Showbiz, in Hackensack, N.J., they’d be competing alongside a team called the Larkin Dancers. Larkin’s studio was intimidatingly large, with three different locations in the state. When Angelina watched videos of Larkin performances, she was “shocked,” she told me. “They are perfect.” The entire group could do triple pirouettes in perfect unison. Even some of the Prestige dancers’ mothers were taken aback.

The awards ceremony for Imagine didn’t start until nearly 11 p.m. It was a complicated affair: Like most dance competitions, Imagine had intricate prize levels ranging from four to five stars in quarter-increments, denoting different levels of difficulty and accomplishment. The competition also gave special awards for characteristics like being photogenic or having a great personality. Angelina and her friends looked on attentively as the announcer handed out prizes for “Heart and Soul” and “Best Character.”

Angelina won in her age group. A stagehand placed a small tiara on her head, which Angelina knelt to receive. Moments later, she won another prize for her overall score. This time she received a thick, unwieldy plaque, which she balanced in her lap after returning to her seat. In order to be sure she was perceived as humble, she remained essentially expressionless, but she was happy. “I don’t like to be too confident,” she said.

When I said goodbye to Angelina that night, it was almost 1 a.m. She was sitting on her costume suitcase with her chin on her hands. Her hair, unwound from its tight bun, still held a pulled-back shape. The next morning, she’d awaken at 5 a.m. to stretch, apply her makeup and drive back from her home in Fairfield, N.J., to the next day of competition in Sparta.

On weekends when there were no competitions, Angelina’s team rehearsed all day. When I arrived at the Prestige Dance Academy to watch one Saturday morning, the girls were lying bleary-eyed on the carpet, warming up. That morning they’d be working on “Seven Nation Army,” their favorite small-group dance and one of Prestige’s staple numbers — it often took first place at competitions. The dance featured the seven core members of the preteen group: Angelina, Annalise, Tiffany, Nicole Kelly, Alana Pomponio, Jenna Ebbinghousen and Marin Gold. The costumes were camouflage leotards, sparkly military hats and black fishnets with seams up the back. The music was a jazzy cover of the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army,” from 2003.

Compared with some powerhouse studios like the Dance Company in Salt Lake City or Club Dance in Mesa, Ariz., which have hundreds of students, Prestige is small. But Crupi had a strong vision for her fledgling studio. She was uncommonly disciplined and instituted rules that emphasized teamwork and uniformity: Every week, the children broke into groups and tidied the studio, gamely scrubbing mirrors and taking out the trash. In class and rehearsal, dancers were required to wear all black.

Before she opened Prestige, Crupi was a dancer for what was then the New Jersey Nets. The choreography she favored for her students was crisp and sleek; her favorite types of pieces were jazz dances, which she liked to costume with mesh and faux pearls. Her choreography wasn’t conservative, but she coached her dancers to do saucy movements sharply and athletically, so that they looked more age-appropriate. When she arrived at the studio soon after 9 a.m. bearing coffee, she congratulated the girls for arriving earlier than she had. They had already been there alone for nearly an hour, silently practicing their pirouettes. She began the day’s rehearsal by cuing up a previous week’s judge’s critique on her laptop. At every competition, judges record live feedback while the children perform, presenting studios with the commentary at the end. Studios rewatch the videos at home while rehearsing for the next competition.

The team huddled around; Crupi pressed play. Images of their bodies filled the screen. As difficult moments approached, the judges reacted in real time, emitting “Ohs” when the moves worked. A turn section approached; on the slightly fuzzy video, I could see that one or two spinning girls were slower than the others. “A little off there,” one judge said. “Watch those turns.”

“Look!” Crupi cut in. “Do we see that timing? That spacing? That arm?” The girls nodded.

They peeled themselves off the floor and spread out to run the piece. Crupi started the music. The girls began to snap their fingers slowly. One by one they whipped around and did a few solo moves. As the singer’s voice plunged into a smokier register, the girls moved with more intensity, their small shoes stamping on the floor. They ground their rib cages and hips. Tiffany did an aerial — a handless cartwheel, body hanging suspended for a moment upside down in the air. The other girls stalked around the stage, strutting on their tiptoes. They smacked the floor with their palms. They did a double à la seconde turn, one leg whipping out to the side in the middle of each swift revolution, followed by a triple pirouette dropping into a split.

Crupi cut the music. The turning section still wasn’t right. “When you’re at nationals, it won’t be good enough,” she reminded them. “At nationals, there will be 8-year-olds that do these turns together.” She had them try the turns without music. To keep time, the girls counted out loud in unison. Crupi watched, her chin lowered, eyes fixed at ankle level. “It’s Angelina’s that are off,” she concluded.

Private Equity Rips Apart Kuoni as Thomas Cook India Gets More Global

Skift Take: Thomas Cook India’s acquisition of Kuoni’s network of destination management companies is a story of how an Indian company becomes a global player overnight. There are also deep wounds about how a global company like Kuoni could end up being broken, literally, to pieces.

Overnight, in one fell swoop, Thomas Cook India has become a multinational player with a global network of destination management companies, including Allied TPro U.S., Asian Trails, Australian Tours Management, Desert Adventures/Gulf Dunes Middle East and Private Safaris Africa.

Swedish private equity group EQT which now owns Kuoni, is handing this platter to Thomas Cook India Group, completing the end of travel-service provider Kuoni as a mighty business-to-business travel player. The other main piece, GTA, is going to Hotelbeds Group as announced a few weeks ago.

Destination management companies serve as tour operators for meetings, and some also have leisure departments.

EQT still owns VFS Global, the highly lucrative visa and passport facilitation service, which sources say was why EQT bought Kuoni in 2016.

With its acquisition of Quoin’s destination management company network, “Thomas Cook India is finally a multinational company, given we now have a global footprint,” said its chairman and managing director Madhavan Menon in a phone interview.

Nothing To Do With Thomas Cook UK

Thomas Cook India has nothing to do with Thomas Cook UK. Fairfax Financial Holdings, based in Canada, owns Thomas Cook India. Indian billionnaire Prem Watsa founded Fairfax in 1985 and serves as chairman and CEO.

Menon said each of the Kuoni destination management companies is profitable while the price of buying the whole network was “competitive.” Most importantly, they are run by “people we know, like Luzi Matzig and Laurent Kuenzle at Asian Trails, who we are comfortable with, and who rank up there as among the best resources,” Menon added.

Menon is especially pleased with Thomas Cook India’s new footprint elsewhere in Asia through Asian Trails.

“I strongly believe the Europe and North American markets are re-emerging from where they have been in the last several years and Asia will be the destination of choice. As Singapore Airlines, Qantas and other carriers start operating longhaul aircraft – nonstop from Asia to North America, from Australia to Europe – these tourists will find it easier to come to Asia, unlike today where it involves a stop through say Emirates or Qatar in the Middle East.

“But the minute nonstop begins, more Europeans and North Americans will come to Asia. We’re talking about the niche, higher-end segment, not the mass market. The Chinese, Indians, Indonesians etc., they will all come but they are a shorthaul, price-sensitive market. Therefore, I believe we have an opportunity through Asian Trails to harvest that demand.”

Will destination management companies be cut out?

With the rise of online travel agencies, airline and hotel direct-to-consumer efforts, peer-to-peer home shares and trips, it remains debatable how long traditional tour operators can sustain themselves.

Menon disagrees, saying longhaul visitors, whether they are going to Indonesia or Africa, need the assistance of destination management companies, particularly because they usually travel multi-point in a longhaul journey.

Thomas Cook India and sister company SOTC, which Thomas Cook India earlier bought from Kuoni, are two of the largest outbound travel brands in India, They both will be able to leverage the new destination marketing company network, which has presence in a 17 countries. These include the U.S., Canada, South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, the U.A.E., Jordan, Oman, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia and Australia.

“We currently use various DMCs; it’s more of old relationships. Now that we have teams on the ground, it gives us the opportunity to consolidate this area,” says Menon.

Former Kuoni CEO Hans Lerch, who bought Private Safaris in 1989, Allied Tours in 2000 and TPro in 2003, says in an email interview that he believes destination marketing companies remain “a decent business.”

“A lot are getting disintermediated but good ground-handlers are good ground-handlers and their service will not just disappear. It needs innovation and risk-taking but this business remains a decent business,” says Lerch, who is now executive vice chairman of Abercrombie & Kent.

Lerch believes the latest acquisition is “logical” for Thomas Cook India.

“Rem Watsa, having made his fortune in insurance, bought Thomas Cook, probably more for its financial services, then added TCI, then SITA. And with SITA being a carbon copy of what they bought now, it’s a logical move. It adds $250 million to their top line and if they let their people work, coordinate a bit on the sales side, make sure they all sit on decent IT systems, (Thomas Cook India can add) $15 million to their earnings in four years.”

Lerch adds: “All these companies (the destination management company network) are now free of the Kuoni shackles where everything during the last few years was ‘compliance’ and nothing was ‘business.’ This is now different. They can work properly again and is the reason why they will probably all recover and hence be good acquisitions for Fairfax.”

AlliedTPro CEO, Mark Morello, is excited. “They (Thomas Cook India) embrace an entrepreneurial spirit which we believe is critical for a DMC to be successful in today’s market.

“One of the most exciting aspects of this acquisition is that in addition to being a part of a large global network, each DMC will be in a position to reach its full potential by being in charge of its own destiny. In addition, we look forward to expanding our client base in India, a market with enormous potential, where we already have a longstanding relationship with SOTC,” he says in an email.

How Kuoni lost the plot

With GTA and the Kuoni’s destination marketing companies in new hands, Kuoni’s disintegration is virtually complete, a process that started over two years ago. This pains many of its former leaders and employees who witnessed a more than 100-year-old brand that is as recognizable as Nestle crumble piecemeal before their eyes.

They have scathing words for how Kuoni lost the plot.

Contacted by email for a comment on the latest sale of the network, Peter Diethelm, former Kuoni UK head honcho, says: “The individual businesses may well be in a better home today as the Kuoni board during the last decade from 2006 to 2016 neither understood how to run them, nor had any vision to bring them back to their former glory. It all started with the disastrous sale for a song of the tour operation over two years ago.

“This highlighted the weakness of the European supervisory board structure where incompetent men in gray suites made strategic decisions without experience, vision or even basic understanding of the business, which they ultimately ruined, whilst at the same time paying themselves ever increasing fees and success bonuses for failing both the company and its employees.”

Asian Trails’ chairman Luzi Matzig says something similar. “Kuoni went down the drain for many reasons but two main ones were firstly, the top management was too removed from the ground to comprehend what was happening, what was needed and often too scared to take responsibility and make decisions. Management by consensus is not the way to succeed in today’s fast-moving business environment.

“Secondly, Kuoni involved far too many chiefs and few Indians to actually do the work. They needed to consult lawyers, HR, consultants and IT gurus and the board etc., and paid too high salaries and bonuses to the top 50 or so managers. This resulted in excessive costs which they charged on to the operating divisions, causing unnecessary financial burdens.

“I am convinced that the people at Fairfax and Thomas Cook India will not make the same mistakes.”

Asian Trails’ CEO Laurent Kuenzle sums up the feeling that Kuoni’s fate turned into “a sad story.”

“An international tourism focused company with one of the best brands in the world destroyed by breaking it up into pieces, causing suffering to countless employees in an incomprehensible drive to an objective that nobody understands,” he says. “Our industry is an industry of people. They make companies or they break them. Companies are not broken by computers or wrong standard operations procedures. They are destroyed by people.”

But Kuenzle says he’s not looking back but forward with new ownership under Thomas Cook India. “Their drive for internationalism will continue within their long-term entrepreneurial strategic plan. I believe that the key to their success is the empowerment of management, continued (or regained) independence of each company they acquire, long-term strategic growth planning including investments, and a good nose for where the next pot of gold is,” he says.

As with everything, only time will tell. But for Kuoni destination management companies, it’s already better than being stuck in the mire.
