everybody clap for me. today i asked my surgeon to resubmit a referral that fell through in march for trigger point injections, and called to ask about getting set up with a new therapist after mine moved practices at the end of february & got put on a waitlist, AND i got over an EIGHT YEAR LONG MENTAL BLOCK and called my dentist to sheepishly ask for a comprehensive exam to get caught up on my tooth care.

the older i get, the less self care looks like lazy days & little treats & ignoring stressful obligations, and the more it looks like dragging myself kicking and screaming through all the tedious yet necessary bullshit of being an adult who's fully responsible for my own well-being.

Pirouettes en dedans are the bane of my existence! I mean, not that en dehors are much better but at least I get them all the way around without killing myself.

No you have any tips that worked for you? Stuff I can try at home? The internet has so much information and it's overwhelming so I trust your pro opinion.

This is my 3rd year of ballet school, starting as an adult beginner. My barre game is killer! I can see so much improvement while at it. Feet, turn out, position, even port de bras looks better. My favorite of all barre exercises are rond de jambes, any sort. My center is a mess. Funny enough I much prefer watching adagios but I do much better in allegro. Despite my weight and body characteristics, I can jump (sure enough I'm nowhere near the 180 in the air but yesterday I almost sat my right leg split in floor barre!!!!! ) and have promising technique to improve. Now balancing in adagio and doing the damn pirouettes is not my thing and I want so much to improve.

My teacher says she might add me to pointe classes in the future but not before I can master a simple pirouette. I'm ready to work hard! So, help is needed!!!

Ok! So it's time for another Technique Talk with Ale!

Let's start with some general rules for pirouettes:

Bad preparation -> Bad turn. If it magically goes well, it's luck, not skill and you can't depend on that.

Pirouettes hate change, you need to establish the pose as soon as possible and try not to adjust anything mid-turn.

If you see the floor, you're wrong. End of discussion.

Now into specifics for pirouette en dedans, from 4th position:

Preparation

Size of the position: Sit in a 4th position that's comfortable for you. It shouldn't be so large that it's difficult for you to shift your weight to the front foot, but it also shouldn't be so small that you struggle to feel where your weight is placed. Also, watch your hips closely, push the hip of your working leg down and forwards, toward your front leg.

Weight distribution: Now there are a lot of different schools of thought here, I will simply share what I find the most helpful for myself. Some people think the weight should be 50/50 but for me, I like to keep the majority of weight over my front foot around 90/10 if you're a numbers person. At the time before the preparation, I can easily lift my back foot off the floor. It's a more drastic shift than what feels normal, but pre-setting yourself this way minimizes the weight transfer to get into the pirouette. A smaller, more controlled weight transfer is more stable.

Upper Body: Whenever I go to prep for a turn, I bring some attention to my abdominals. I mean your abs should always be working, but it's especially necessary when you go for a turn. Feel the connection between your backbone and your spine. There also needs to be energy exerted through your arms from your shoulder blades. They're your stabilizers for the turn, they can't dangle like uncooked pasta.

Initiating the turn:

'Spiraling' with the arms: You don't need to do that wacky crazy wind-up, it generates way more force than you'll know what to do with. However, there's a small, internal twist, more for your spine than your arms. You should feel the counter-rotation as you slightly twist away from the direction that you want to turn, creating space for yourself to start the turn.

Supporting leg, power from your heel: The supporting front heel is what's gonna get you around. Instantly try to push your heel forward on releve and focus on getting that little 'spring' moment to initiate the turn. This is the first thing that moves in your lower body and this is how you keep your supporting leg turned out. If you can't feel the rotation from the heel, try doing just a tour lent (promenade) instead of a pirouette. Feel the inside of your leg pushing around as you move your heel. Try one and eventually two rotations like this WITHOUT changing your back or your passe. It should take you at least 10 seconds to do this, it's a great exercise for checking and improving your balance and strength. Also, you'll really feel your supporting leg work and can get the sensation of what 'on your leg' feels like.

Working leg: There are two options, bringing the leg in through a la second with an enveloppé or just directly bringing the leg into the turning position. I find the latter easier to start with because it doesn't involve another pose, and coming in from second involves a ton of force that's harder to control. Also, it's less likely to throw your hips out of wack.

General coordination: The older I get, the more I realize that the preparation for turns doesn't have to be super duper fast. One of the ballet masters in the company specializes in fixing our turns. He's always telling us that you shouldn't rush to start the rotations and the prep can feel slower, even at a fast tempo. Fix the position first, feel yourself transfer your weight and arrive arrive in passé almost 'before' you start turning. Don't rush to get to the pirouette.

Rotation + Finish

The verticality of the spine: Keep your posture and a tall straight spine with your abs pressed in tight!! If you start to look down or up, you're doomed, not even God can save you.

Try not to hop: In my opinion, it doesn't do you any favors and only encourages bad habits once you get on pointe. Start with one clean turn and try to end up on releve on a super-engaged leg, drilling your toes into the floor. If you can't finish a single turn like that, you're not ready for doubles.

Spot: The same ballet master is always saying "chin to left shoulder" (for pirouettes on the right leg) and this specific direction is beneficial for me because it reminds me that spotting is an action, it takes effort and energy. Keep a loose neck, like a metronome, just 'tick, tick' for a double turn. He also stresses 'active' eyes and says that knowing what/where you're spotting is key. I personally am not always consciously looking at something, I rely more on the rhythm of my head moving. But I also have a really sucky spot so.... (this ballet master also says that my turns could be so good but I insist on spotting like a sleeping bear)

Arms: If you're turning with your arms above your head, I strongly recommend taking your arms from preparation, through second to fifth but through the diagonal towards the direction you're turning. I think taking your arms up through the center is really difficult as it generates a lot more force and it can throw you backward. I know we all think we have our arms in front of our bodies, but sometimes that's not the case. Especially when turning, keep your arms more forward than you think, having them behind you is most likely going to force your ribs to open, and then your posture is all out of wack. Something that helped me a ton: practicing moving your arms back and forth quickly from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 5th, WITHOUT changing anything in your back. This is an exercise in isolation, just like jazz/hip hop dancers do. You should be able to hold your ribs closed and move your forearms freely.

Maintaining turnout + passe position: One of the most common mistakes is the passé turnout deteriorating. Try to keep your glutes, hip flexors, and hamstrings consistently engaged. That's what's going to hold your passe, the muscles under your thigh. Try to keep your thigh perfectly parallel to the ground, this is the most aesthetically pleasing line. Don't relax too soon!! You're not 'done' until you're back in the plie/5th position.

So there's A LOT here and I appreciate you all for reading. I can't promise this is magically going to fix your turns, but I hope some of my tips will help or at least give you some things to think about! It's super technical but the most important thing is to get into the studio and practice! Don't try to change everything at once, just work gradually and safely but try to be consistent. okay so: in my personal experience 90% of all lesbian flirting is eyeing up fellow women to discreetly try to determine if they, too, are wlw. then you compliment each others button downs and never speak to each other again

BUT if you would like to painstakingly attempt to challenge the starfish fallacy then read on for my comprehensive guide on flirting w/ women! (credentials: i have accidentally flirted with So Many Women oh my god)

first up: start with the art of compliments! if you're too shy to tell a girl they're gorg out of nowhere, then focus on their clothing, their haircuts, their cool shoes, the patches on their denim jackets, etc. opening a convo with a compliment is one of the easiest shortcuts, as it neatly prevents you from having to come up w/ a witty rejoinder right off the bat (save those for later)

physical proximity makes it easy to do this to someone standing or sitting next to you. if, however, they're on the other side of the room/otherwise engaged, it gets trickier. if ur confident enough to walk up to a girl in a coffeeshop + compliment her, GO FOR IT. but if you're too anxious to just coldcall her, approach with a question.

I want to apologize for the absolute shit pictures but what's new lol

So, let's start with the platform. First thing I noticed was the blue was brighter but the platform was darker? It was like someone cranked up the contrast to 100. Ngl it looked pretty cool. Yoongis platform doesn't typically have a barrier like some of the others do so I just kinda walked in and did the whole, "happy birthday, I have questions" His energy seemed a lot more... vibrant? And playful I guess? It was really nice. Now. The actual connection was intresting because the cord was blue again and like, real thick. (I don't think my perceived thickness of the cord has and real correlation with how strong the connection is. It was just thicc) this time though, the cord was connected at the chest instead of the third eye. So i was like, ??? But my guide didn't give my any sort of helpful input (my guide likes to watch me suffer in my confusion. I'm sure of it)

Anyway, cord like that and then yoobi gave me a headbutt to connect at the third eye. Idk why he gotta be like that :( istg next time he's gonna flick my forehead or something.

I was like "cool cool cool. I want to do the reading now pls" and idk how to explain the energy other than sassy. You know? Blah blah blah I'm thinking, "I don't remember him being so cheeky but maybe I've been gone long enough for him to level up into his final sass monster form"

Anywho, this was intresting because after the little strings were connected and stuff, we plopped down on the floor. And it was like everything I was doing irl was being mimicked infront of yoons energy? So we were sitting facing eachother and I was putting the cards down between us?? Usually that doesn't happen but it was kinda fun!!

Moving right along. I first asked if there was anything he wanted to say or needed to get across and it was 11. Now, 11 has come up before and I'm still not to sure what it's in reference to? My best guess is possibly he's been seeing 11:11 or that it's 2? Idk let me know if you have any clues lol. Other stuff was just kinda banter and stuff.

So so so.

The reading. First thing I asked was how he was doing. And I shuffled his preticular way (when I ask a question I always ask for the energy to tell me how much to shuffle or when to stop. For yoongi it's always 2-2-2. So 2 bridge shuffles, 2 hand shuffles and then split the pile in 2. That's why I think 11 might be 2 to him?)

The cards we got are ace of swords rev, justice,the heirophant rev, the empress.

So based off this I was like okay. I want to pull clarity cards for the two rev cards to get a better picture so I pulled the emperor rev for ace or swords rev and strength rev and wheel of fortune rev for the heirophant rev.

Starting with the ace of swords rev, and the emperor reverse. It seems like yoongi has been re thinking his relationship to control in his life. That's he's possibly noticing any unhealthy needs to control his life and the situation around him. It could also refer to his judgment being clouded by a rigid approach.

With the justice card it makes me think that he's possibly considering a big choice in his life or that he's really doing some deconstructing of his own views. This second idea fits in well with him getting clarity on some possibly unhealthy control issues in his life.

Now. The heirophant rev, strength rev and wheel of fortune reverse. This was intresting to me bc they are all major arcana. The heirophant rev can really talk about no longer needing outside approval and making your own way in your own time bc you are your own teacher. Strength in rev I kinda read as self doubt and feeling down in this case. Like a lack of confidence in himself and his abilities. And the wheel of fortune in reverse I took to mean as his breaking cycles. All together these cards kinda paint a picture about wanting and trying to break a cycle of self doubt and self limiting beliefs and learning more about himself and why he think what he does about himself and searching through everything for truth. It's really good!! In short he's doing some nice soul searching and trusting himself to guide his own way through this self discovery!

The empress! This card seems to pop up for yoobi a lot and I think it really speaks to the abundance that surrounds him! Not just money but the abundance of creativity, love, friends ect.

Now now now. I asked him if there was anything that he wanted to tell us about himself or bts or what's happening in the near future. For that I got 2 of cups, king of wands and 3 of coins.

So the 2 of cups is partnership. Usually romantic. Could be pertaining to the may 13th thing that is ever present lol but I'll get to that later. With the 3 of coins talking about teamwork, this could definitely hint at collaborations coming up!! That's the vibe I get. No one crush my dreams. And for the king of wands it could be talking about taking the reigns on a new project and starting to get it done. Like a new opportunity. This could be a new bts project like starting a new campaign or new venture or maybe personal like the a mixtape or doing more songs for other groups ect.

I had to ask him how he was feeling about the grammys. I had to. Had to. The cards were ace of wands, 2 of wands and death reverse. When these came flying out I could help but smile. Yoongis energy was almost giddy too!

It's that spark of creativity and inspiration. It's that feeling when you get super excited over some new thing. I think this is the perfect example for feeling reinvigorated. The 2 of wands takes that spark from the ace and tries to funnel that excitement and newness into something directional. Using that burst of creativity to start planning for future progress!! Its so nice to see that! If they don't win (IF) you bet we're gonna get some bangers about a corrupt system. If (WHEN) they do win we'll get bangers about how thankful they are to have gotten where they are in spite of a corrupt system. I just want to hear an uncensored version of yoongi being like, "HOLY FUCKING SHIT, WE DID IT BITCHES. FUCK ALL YOU BASTARDS THAT SAID WE COULDN'T."

Now I asked if there was anything yoobi wanted to say to us as in advice or comfort or anything like that and I got, Clearing negativity, make time for self care, when I'm tuned into the energy of abundance I become abundant. when I'm in a state of appreciation im in vibrational alignment with my true love nature. The world rev, 2 of swords rev and that project, that person, that idea is waiting.

Awe. Take care of yourselves!! Make sure to take time to enjoy what you like and try not to let any negativity get in the way of you enjoying your days. The world rev to me seems to be talking about seeking closure on the things in your life that have been impacting you. Tie up those loose ends so you can move foward without triping over yourself and 2 of swords rev I think talks about information overload and being kinda indecisive bc of that. Take a sep back to evaluate the situation at hand because sometimes it's so close you can't see what you're looking for. Those of you who are studying and getting frustrated because you just can't seem to get it, try taking a step back and doing something to take care of yourself and come back to it so you can approach with a clearer mind. Try not to get stuck or paralyzed by choice but if you do get stuck, take some time to detach yourself from the situation and come back later!

A fair few people wanted an update on yoobis soulmate as well. If you need a refresher here's the run down. Yoongis soulmate is impossible for me to read, yoongi is a smug ass and I'm nosy and probably a little dumb.

Weiss scrunched up her nose, reaching into the box to touch a knit wool sweater, the garish yellow fabric visible amid the light blue tissue paper. While she expected her girlfriend of several years to go a bit overboard with the gifts this Christmas- she’d been far too much of a bouncing ball of energy in the preceding weeks for subtlety- she hadn’t expected it to this degree. A few material things- a new office chair for the home study, a heating blanket for when the woman was gone on missions, the latest scroll update chip- and the customary handmade gifts, like a new coffee cup with ‘World’s Coolest Ray of Sunshine’ printed in Yang’s distinct handwriting and a set of bracelet gauntlets in the same vein as Ember Celica, except cast in white and fitted to her slender wrists.

But here, she had to draw the line.

“Yang. What in Remnant is this disaster?” She didn’t even pull it fully out of the box; she absolutely detested wool sweaters, the sort of picture perfection they seemed to reflect. Matching family sweaters for a matching family- she’d grown up in that sort of dishonest illusion and the agony it brought. She’d never told Yang the full story, of course, never wanted to dive too deep in the eternal disappointment that was her upbringing, but she’d thought her tastes tending towards silk and satin would discourage anything in the realm of wool.

“It’s a sweater!” The blonde cheerily replied, a huge present sitting in her lap and her crossed arms resting atop it, light blue sleeves of her own sweater visible with the same garish yellow breaking up the solid color with little designs. “I made us matching ones. Try it on, Snowfall.”

“Absolutely not,” she replied, removing the box from her lap and setting it aside. “I’m not wearing that and I will kill you if you put it anywhere near me.”

Yang frowned, shoulders slumping. “But-”

“Look, I appreciate the sentiment, truly I do, but I can’t stand wool sweaters.” She got to her feet, wading through the sea of ripped wrapping paper so she could lean over and press a kiss to her girlfriend’s forehead. “I’m sorry, Sweetheart, but there’s no way you’re getting me into that thing, but yours fits you rather well. The colors are… certainly eye catching.”

“Well, yeah, I…” she paused, then shook her head. “So, there’s nothing I can do to get you to wear it to the party tonight?”

“You’d need a deal with the Devil, Maidens, and every deity from here to Mistral before I’d even consider it.” Weiss slipped a hand beneath the blonde’s chin and directed her into a kiss. “I’m sure you worked hard on it and I am impressed. I absolutely adore the time and care you put into these sorts of things.” She sighed. “But I can’t and won’t be wearing it.”

Yang looked absolutely crestfallen, with her shoulders slumped, and it pained her to be the cause, but certain lines wouldn’t be crossed. “Oh, okay. Well. I mean. I’m-”

“Don’t apologize,” she said, rubbing her thumbs along her girlfriend’s cheeks. “It’s a heartfelt gift, time consuming and thoughtful, but I absolutely refuse to touch wool again. It’s something to be mindful in the future, my little Sunspot, and I truly love that you did this for me.”

Her lips quirked up into a small grin, seemingly soothed for the moment. “Yeah, well… I’m gonna go check on the bird. It, uh, should be ready for basting, and I don’t wanna dry it out.”

“You’ve still a present to open though.” She gestured to the one in Yang’s lap.

“Oh, uh, I’ll get it when I get back.” The blonde stood, still holding the present in her arms and turning around to put it in her seat before heading towards the kitchen. “It’ll just take a few minutes.”

“Very well.” Weiss put her hands on her hips. “And while you’re gone, take your sweater off. I’d like to give you a hug when you get back.”

For a moment, Yang went stock still, turning back towards her with a question on her lips, but it went unvoiced. Instead, she merely nodded with a weak smile and slipped out.

But Weiss had caught a glimpse of something on the front of the sweater- letters in that garish yellow spelling out words- and her brows furrowed. She could’ve sworn she’d seen “I finally asked” written on the front of the sweater, which she hadn’t had a proper look at now that she thought of it; her girlfriend had slipped it on after they’d sat down to open presents and Yang had kept the big present- the latest gaming system bundle, something she’d expressed a significant amount of interest in- in her lap the whole while.

With a furrow to her brows, her gaze fell on the yellow sweater still inside the box and, though loathe as she was to touch the blasted fabric, found her curiosity winning out. Using the tissue paper as a buffer, she pulled the sweater out to find blue letters along the front of it.

“I said yes?”

And then she saw the little pouch just beneath the words, bulging a bit with something contained within it.

Weiss blinked, shoulders falling a little as the pieces fell together. Forgetting the paper for the moment, she dug into the pouch and pulled out a little velvet box, prying it open to find a gorgeous engagement ring inside.

The air fled from her lungs as tears came to her eyes, other hand dropping the sweater and going to cover her mouth.

“There, it should be finished cooking… by the… time… oh.” She looked up, gaze landing on Yang as she entered the room, bereft of the sweater and with a blush rising in her cheeks. “I… uh. Wow, this didn’t go like I planned. At all.”

“Well, I wouldn’t want to make a liar of you,” she said, voice watery as she offered a smile. “You can’t say you ‘finally’ asked if you haven’t yet.”

“… alright.” Smiling, the blonde came around to kneel down in front of her, using both of her hands to cup Weiss’ holding the ring box. “Weiss Schnee, these last few years have been the best of my life. For all the hardships we’ve faced, you’ve been by my side for every step of the way, and I absolutely love you with every little part of me. Will you marry me?”

“Yes,” she replied, launching herself forward and bowling Yang over in the process, pressing their lips together in a kiss that quickly became heated. “Yes, yes, yes.”

“Okay, I get it.” The blonde chuckled, looking up at her with all the adoration in the world. “And here I thought I was gonna have to come up with something else.”

“Oh, perish the thought.” Weiss smiled, glancing down at the ring box. “It’s a beautiful ring. Did you pick it out yourself?”

“I had a little help.” Yang took it from her hand. “Lemme just slip it- wait, what happened to your hand?”

She glanced down, noting the red rash appearing on her pale skin, a prelude to the horrible itching that would surely follow. “I’m allergic to wool. Have I really never mentioned that before?”

Horror passed over the blonde’s face. “No! No you didn’t! Weiss, I wouldn’t have made you a wool sweater if I knew you were allergic!”

“People forget things sometimes, Love; I just assumed I’d mentioned it at some point and you’d forgotten.”

“Well, you didn’t!” Yang slapped a hand to her face and groaned. “Damnit. No wonder you don’t want to wear the damn thing. I thought you somehow knew I was proposing!”

“How was I supposed to know?” Reaching over for the sweater, she quickly slipped her arms through it. “Really, Yang, as sweet as this is, a little warning might’ve been nice. I wouldn’t have dismissed anything outright if I’d suspected you’d be proposing on Christmas morning.”

“C’mon, it was supposed to be a surprise- wait, what are you doing, Weiss stop that.”

Too late; she’d already slipped it over her head, the sweat fitting rather snugly around her torso. “You wanted me to wear it to the party. I’m still a little critical of the color choices, I’ll admit, but it certainly will ensure everyone is aware that we’re now happily engaged.”

“You’re allergic to wool, you can’t wear that!”

“I can and I will.” Despite her rising discomfort, she leaned down for another kiss. “I’m truly sorry I never told you before. I… suppose it just never came up? My father used to force us to wear matching wool sweaters for Christmas parties at the company; it was absolute hell for me every year and it took weeks for the rashes to go away.”

Sighing, Yang laid her head back with a thud against the floorboards before looking at her. “Okay, here’s the new plan. Take off the sweater, I’m going to slather you in calimine lotion, and we’ll find a turtleneck for you to wear under the sweater for the party.”

“I’m only taking the sweater off if I can wear the ring.”

“Both of your hands are swelling.” The blonde reached up, taking off a plain gold chain she’d taken to wearing- a birthday present from Blake a few months back. Slipping the ring onto the chain, she reached up and put it around Weiss’ neck. “There. Does that meet the standards of our agreement?”

“Yes, I will accept this.” Weiss quickly pulled the sweater off, resisting the urge to begin scratching at the rising redness on her pale skin. “I’m lucky, you know.”

“How do you figure?”

She smiled, leaning down for another kiss. “I have a very thoughtful and sweet fiance. Tell me; what better Christmas present could I ever possibly receive?”

The twinkle she saw in lilac eyes at that… she didn’t know when or even how, but she realized all too late that she’d just set a goal for her beloved, and Yang Xiao Long, her future wife, would do everything in her power to attain it.

She rather looked forward to what the woman would come up with… as long as it didn’t involve fucking wool.
