Personal style is an elusive beast at best. Besides the fact...
Tumblr media
Personal style is an elusive beast at best. Besides the fact that it’s ever evolving, we’re sure you also appreciate a handful of different styles. But which one truly speaks to you? That’s where we come in.
No matter where you are on your path to mastering your personal take on fashion, there are certain actions you can follow to hone in on it. We’ve nailed down the steps to discovering the particular look that speaks to your most fashionable self. Ahead, we’re breaking down ways to tap into your unique style and all of the many nuances it has. Click through now—your personal style is waiting. Then, shop pieces our editors are loving right now.
The likelihood of finding a single style icon that defines you? Kinda low. Most people are more of a mix, think a little Selena Gomez with a dose of Bella Hadid, plus a dash of Rihanna. To figure out who your main influencers are, start by doing a Pinterest search of “style icons” and save the images you are drawn to. You’ll start to see a collection of repeat people (your style menagerie) who you can look to for inspiration. Take a second pass at your inspiration photos, look beyond the names, and focus on the outfits. Pick a few words to describe the vibe of the looks. Are they classic, modern, eclectic, bohemian, or trend-forward? Settle on a handful of words that feel true to your style, and write them down for future reference, as they will help you clarify and define your look. You know those special days when you walk out the door feeling like your most stylish self? Snap a quick picture for future reference. These are the outfits that epitomize your true personal style, and should serve as inspiration for spin-off outfits. Audrey Hepburn had her cropped pants and ballet flats, Jackie O. had her oversize sunglasses, and Edie Sedwick had her statement earrings and mod minis. All fashionable women own a signature item or two that becomes part of their style identity. Yours can be as simple as a personalized piece of jewelry or as memorable as a leopard coat. Have a closet full of striped tees or ankle boots? There’s a reason your closet has an excess of a certain item. You purchase these items again and again because they make you happy and feel comfortable. They are your style sweet spot if you will. As long as the item is flattering and works for your current style, we say to embrace these repeat offenders. As we mentioned in step four, it’s not a bad thing to rely on a signature staple. Take a hard look at your closet and notice the piece or two that doesn’t fit with the overall vibe. Is there a bohemian embroidered blouse among a sea of collared button-up shirts? That’s your outlier. Chances are, your odd piece out symbolizes a style you like but aren’t fully comfortable trying. If you’re aiming to evolve your look or try something new, consider going after pieces that feel more like that aspirational item. Is there something people compliment you on? Whether it’s your amazing footwear game or your ability to style dresses like no one else, wearing clothes that play up your best style strengths will always look stylish, no matter what is currently trending. Find out more about which pieces successful women wear to feel powerful. While we’re mainly concerned with clothing and accessories, true style encompasses beauty too. If you’re not happy with your beauty look, you’re never going to feel as fashionable as possible. To tackle this topic, we’ll refer you to our awesome sister site, Byrdie, for up-to-the-minute trends, advice, and useful tips to up your beauty game. Trust your instincts, and wear what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. If you have more of a classic style, wearing the season’s most out-there trend pieces is going to look unnatural. Similarly, if you align with Rihanna’s tough-meets-glamorous appeal, a floral maxi dress might not be your best bet. Chances are you’ve likely already got a winning sense of style, so embrace it, refine it, and don’t fight it. A bag that’s as artful as it is useful. Hands down one of our favorite interpretations on the season’s It color. This skirt’s appeal is all in its exposed buttons and asymmetrical hemline. Is there a Ganni item we don’t fall madly in love with? Negative. Wide-leg denim is the only style fashion people are wearing right now. Wedges are back, everyone. This jumpsuit is all about the bold stripes. This bag makes us want to be at a chic dinner party, stat. Meet your new statement earrings. We’d wear this skirt with ankle boots or slingbacks. When it comes to white shirts, I have one of two ways I love to wear, with a pair of blue jeans and an optional blazer, or in the summer with a cute skirt and flats. It’s not that the white shirt can’t be worn any other way, quite the contrary, but these are my two go-to looks, and the source of two of my favourite Pinterest boards.
You see, today’s look is kind of like my homage to the greats, think Lauren Bacall and Grace Kelly, two incredible actresses that really worked the stylish white button-downs with skirts, then you had Ava Gardner  pairing her linen white shirt with high-waisted shorts, even Audrey Hepburn was known to wear a white shirt with her capri trousers, and who can forget Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman wearing her oversized white shirt in shoppping scene.
It all starts with a great white shirt, which really is harder than you think to find. You could go for crisp white, linen, oversized, or better still steal one from your other halves wardrobe, I find my husband’s white shirts are just so much better, well except for this Next beauty I’ve had in my closet for a couple of years. That’s what I love about a classic white shirt, it really never goes out of fashion, you just have to mix up how you style it, and how well you can master the perfect roll up of the sleeves!!!
5 White Shirt Styling Tricks To Try This Summer
– Wear with a cut off pair of denim shorts
– Style with a pleated midi skirt and some cute flats
– Use it as a cover-up over your swimsuit or bikini at the beach
– Opt for the classic look, team with the most brilliant blue jeans you have in your wardrobe and a pair of incredible shoes
– Wear oversized with the top buttons un-done over a pretty bralet and oodles of layered jewellery
This weekend I opted to team with classic stripes, I love this Boden skirt, so comfortable and perfect for a picnic at the park, and looks great with this linen shirt and my classic Cambridge Satchel Company Poppy bag and my favourite, can’t stop wear Ego embroidered trainers.
My Style: Next – White Shirt (c/o) // Boden – Stripe Skirt // Ego – Harlow Floral Embroidered Trainers (c/o) // Cambridge Satchel Company – Poppy Bag (c/o) // Withings – Activité Steel Activity and Sleep Tracking Watch (c/o)
How do you like to wear your white shirt?
