"'Now' is the best place to live. 'Now' is where your choices matter," her Boppa said.

Unfortunately, however, Avadine's living in a spittoon called Hogenroe.

Neighborhoods like Mellowbell (AKA Snobville) and Violet View (AKA Piggy Hall) are particularly awful. There's also her crummy residence of Downtown Brickley.

With her Mima back in Vardisse (Avadine's birthplace and the most marvelous city in the entire world, darling) and her Boppa locked up for stupid pig reasons, Avadine's miserable childhood home feels even more miserable.

On the other side of the bridge there's the stuffy Hogenroe Academy, where Avadine is doomed to be a personal attendant (more so a personal lackey) to the professors; a well-meaning group of eggheads who could be a well-doing group of eggheads if they took any of her wonderful albeit legally shaky advice.

Then to the upper-right of the campus there's Barrowsfield, with the ever cheery Hollyberry Orchard. Chugging along 13 years later as if nothing happened. Not that she cares that much. Not that she cares at all, even.

Avadine doesn't even care that, for a moment in time, Hogenroe was her lucky 'now'. For one glittering moment, she was Deenie, the new girl, and Mima and Boppa were her happily married parents, and everyone said she was so talented for her age, and that little orchard in Barrowsfield was even ten times more marvelous than Vardisse.

But that glittering moment in time is dead and buried.

No matter how many dreams Avadine has about it. No matter how often she finds herself painting the same purple flower over and over and over again.

No matter what the strange letters promise her.
