Since Bitcoin hit its all-time high of $20,000, the dominant cryptocurrency has seen more than an 80 percent decline in value from that historic milestone over the past 12 months.

The popularity of Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin pioneered the way for other projects to explore the possibilities of blockchain technology. “We must retain, and in some cases regain, the lean and gritty startup mindset that made us who we are. We now find ourselves occupying a very competitive universe […] to ‘succeed wildly’ […] we must recognize that what got us here will probably not get us there, wherever ‘there’ is.”

Given that ConsenSys invests and helps startups building applications on the Ethereum blockchain, Lubin also made it clear that the company would become far more rigorous with projects under their care and wouldn’t hesitate to dissolve projects that may have looked promising at their inception.

As far as staff cuts go, ConsenSys has confirmed that it would reduce its workforce by 13 percent.

As a crypto industry investor Anthony Pompliano summed up in a recent newsletter, Lubin has taken a tough but necessary course action to take control of proceedings in trying times:

“Joe Lubin is a smart, ambitious guy. He has been at the forefront of many technology trends and built one of the most important companies in crypto. While unpleasant, it is encouraging to see him and his team making the hard decisions to put the business in a better position for future growth. Great leaders have to make the tough calls — I’m sure this one wasn’t easy.”

Like Bitcoin, Ethereum has endured a monumental correction from highs above $1,400 in 2017. It is currently trading at around $94.

Cointelegraph has reached out to Consensys for comment but has not received in by the press time.

Worst-case scenarios

While ConsenSys is adopting what Lubin has described as a “lean and gritty startup mindset,” other companies have had to take far more drastic measures to downscale their operations.

Social network Steemit announced at the end of November that it would be laying off over 70 percent of its staff as a direct result of the severe market conditions affecting cryptocurrencies across the board.

The decentralized platform, which runs on the Steem blockchain, has felt the pinch alongside the rest of the industry. Steemit CEO Ned Scott addressed the challenges in a video, citing a decrease in fiat currency returns from STEEM sales, the platform’s native cryptocurrency, as well as the running cost of Steem’s nodes.

In addition to the staff cuts, the company is looking at a number of technical changes in order to further reduce running costs.

The harsh market climate has taken its toll, considering that Steem once had a market capitalization of over $400 million in May 2017.

Blockchain, Bitcoin jobs on the rise

Even in this harsh slump, the outlook seems positive for the space in general. According to a LinkedIn study, blockchain developers are in high demand on the platform, becoming one of the fastest-growing emerging jobs in the United States.

Over the past three years, jobs relating to blockchain, Bitcoin and cryptocurrency have been on the rise on LinkedIn.

Facebook, for one, with its chequered attitude toward cryptocurrencies, listed five openings for blockchain-related jobs on its career portal earlier this month.

These jobs seem to be extremely lucrative, given the spike in interest in the space over the past two years. Blockchain engineers are said to be earning more than $150,000 a year.

Hired’s “State of Salaries” report also noted a 400 percent increase in demand for blockchain engineers by prospective employers since 2017, all despite the bear market that has dominated in 2018.

Crypto layoffs pale in comparison

According to data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, an outplacement company, November saw an uptick in the amount of looming job cuts in different industries in the U.S.

As a sign of the times, Challenger cited General Motors move to cut 15 percent of its workforce — which equates to around 14,000 jobs — in October, a move that would reportedly save about $6 billion.

The company’s vice president, Andrew Challenger, believes that data collected by Challenger shows that the current economic climate is not helping matters:

“Monthly job cut announcements averaged under 35,000 in all of 2017 and just under 44,000 in 2016. In 2018, cuts are averaging nearly 45,000 per month, with the last four months averaging over 55,000. This upward trend is indicative of a potential economic shift and could spell a downturn.”

In comparison to more significant job cuts around the world, the current slump in the cryptocurrency markets and ensuring job cuts in associated companies seems relatively benign.

In 2015, The Washington Post published an article that took a look at the biggest job cuts in history by some of the biggest corporates around the world, according to data from Challenger.

IBM’s layoffs in 1993 are still ranked as the highest in history, with 60,000 jobs cut. Citigroup, Sears, Roebuck & Co, and the U.S. Army each cut over 50,000 jobs at different stages, but these job cuts put most others in perspective.

An objective view

As previously mentioned, one can draw similar parallels between the rise of internet companies in the 1990s and the rise of cryptocurrency- and blockchain-focused companies from 2010 onward.

Mainstream media headlines have often proclaimed the death of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies over the past few years.

As an article from the Guardian back in December 2000 summed up, the year the dot-com bubble burst saw around 130 internet companies close their doors, leading to around 8,000 job cuts from internet companies. However, those that survived ended up laying the foundation for the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry we have today.

Canada has emerged as a leading crypto nation based on its innovation, low energy costs, high internet speed and favorable regulatory regime. While it ranks third in the world behind the U.S. and the UK when it comes to embracing Blockchain technology, Ethereum Blockchain technology adoption around the world with a wide variety of applications in finance, government, legal, health, education, space, national and multinational cryptocurrencies, energy, initial coin offerings and others is unparalleled.

A study conducted by Cornell University shows that “The Ethereum nodes are both in the latency space, and also geographically, more distributed around the world, as opposed to Bitcoin nodes, which tend to be located in data centers” explained Emin Gün Sirer, Cornell professor and computer scientist.

Center for Blockchain innovation

Canada’s dominance in Blockchain innovation stems in part from Toronto being home to Vitalik Buterin who is the inventor of the Ethereum Blockchain, a second-generation open source software platform, with a general scripting language, which created a protocol for building reliable decentralized trusted networks. It extends the functionality of Satoshi Nakamoto’s Blockchain design which powered decentralized peer-to-peer Bitcoin payment, by adding the concept of smart contracts, also called scripting.

This feature allows the platform to store and run computer programs and enables developers to build and deploy decentralized applications and create whatever operations they want with permanent, trusted record of assets and transactions. The first public Ethereum backed network went live in 2015 and supports ether (ETH), currently the second highest valued cryptocurrency at $63 Billion. ETH finances the Ethereum Swiss Foundation and is used by application developers to pay for transaction fees and services on the Ethereum network.

The platform has worldwide adoption. As Nick Johnson, the chief software architect of Ethereum Foundation, puts it:

“We are building a bridge between the human readability of cryptographic addresses and machine readability. While some others are working similar platforms that they feel may have their own advantages, the size of the development teams around Ethereum ballooned with initial spikes in interest to something larger than anything else in the space. With that, application development, innovation in scaling and other areas followed the trend, thereby creating a snowball effect.”

Ron Resnick, Executive Director of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance which launched last year adds:

“EEA serves as the connective tissue between Ethereum Blockchain and the evolving enterprise industry with over 450 members from all around the world — 135 in the Banking Work Group — which are driving production deployments through a community of over 30,000 developers.”

Take for example ConsenSys, an EEA member firm, which various Ethereum projects including Quorum, and the EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum and trains Ethereum developers at its Academy.

The EEA is also a member of Blockchain Research Institute (BRI), based in Toronto, which is dedicated to over 70 research projects that proposes ways in which Blockchain technology can be utilized to impact various industries. BRI has partnered with the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) of Canada to build a nationwide Blockchain ecosystem; alongside the Bank of Canada which has explored and experimented with a National cryptocurrency.

Cryptocurrency mining

But it’s not only Blockchain innovation where Canada excels in. According to Hydro Quebec, the province has an energy surplus equivalent to 100 Terawatt hours over 10 years and offers some of the lowest electricity rates in North America. This has drawn cryptominers to the region, including from China, in droves. A cryptominers easy, breezy life style starkly contrasts that with a gold miner who works 5,400 to 5,600 feet below surface, at suffocating temperatures, dripping with sweat, while punching holes into burning rock walls, to find hidden gold, in the dark.

Here is an example. China’s Bitmain Technologies began mining in Canada in 2016, when ETH traded at $1. When ETH’s price rose 63,600% to $636 with no implemented hard cap on the total ETH supply, Bitmain first announced a new specialized mining system for ETH; then set its eyes on cryptocurrency mining sites in Quebec, as it takes on average 29.05 TWh annually to operate a cryptocurrency mining operation. That’s about 0.13 percent of total global electricity consumption.

While this may be potential bad news for the smaller cryptominers in the region, a local ETH miner shrugged it off:

“Quebec is one of the best places in the world for mining, thanks to low cost electricity, cool temperatures, and high-speed internet. There’s a lot of data centers in Montreal and they’ll rent you a space for your own server or ZTE smartphone–Sugar S11. Since you’d be paying about half to 1/3rd the electricity price of Ontario, then the added expense of rent is well worth it”

However, recently Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard warned that “Cryptominers planning to move to the region will not get cheap electricity from the government-owned utility Hydro-Quebec, as the utility may not have enough power to meet the demand.” The utility has received an order to await instructions from the government.

Light cryptocurrency regulation

Excessive regulation could stifle innovation; accordingly, Canada lightly regulates cryptocurrency/ICO/tokens. And offers a wide selection of government — federal and provincial — incentives and aid to startup tech companies.

Last year, with the boom in Ethereum Blockchain based ICOs that raised $4 Billion worldwide, the Canadian Securities Administrators suggested that Canadian Securities Law may be potentially applicable to cryptocurrencies. The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) on the other hand granted regulatory relief to allow Ontario’s first regulated ICO under existing exemptions in securities laws.

And the British Columbia Securities Commission approved Canada’s first registered cryptocurrency investment fund, acknowledging that it views cryptocurrency investments as a new and novel way to invest. This ruling allowed pension, investment and venture capital funds including the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System’s Ethereum Capital to invest in cryptocurrencies and tokens.

This year, amid extreme market volatility, Canada’s first Blockchain exchange-traded fund began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange. And OSC started examining the business activities of several exchanges on the concern that they were allowing trading in tokens that would otherwise qualify as securities.

Cryptocurrency taxation with incentives

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) began taxing cryptocurrencies in 2013, but to bolster technological and scientific innovation the –Federal and provincial—governments provide various Research and Development (R&D) tax incentives.

Laura Gheorghiu a tax partner at Gowling WLG explained that the CRA has characterized cryptocurrency as a commodity, therefore the exchange of it becomes a taxable event as a barter transaction giving rise to either business income (fully taxable) or capital gains (50% taxable)— depending on the facts and circumstances– measured according to the value of the assets exchanged in Canadian Dollars.

If a cryptocurrency is held as a capital asset (like an investment), then the gain is classified as a capital gain and taxed as such. If the cryptocurrency is situated, deposited or held outside of Canada directly or through funds, taxpayer must adhere to foreign reporting rules.

If an employee receives cryptocurrency as payment for salary or wages, or otherwise in connection with employment, the amount, computed in Canadian dollars, is included in the employee’s income. Mining of cryptocurrencies is taxed as either a business or a personal hobby (non-taxable).

Business income, wages or capital gains are taxed at the applicable tax rate for the taxpayer in question. The general combined Federal/provincial income tax rates in Canada vary between 26.5% to 30% for corporations and 44.5% to 58.75% for individuals depending on the province.

A non-resident that carries on a business in Canada, is subject to taxation under the same rules as a Canadian resident. Cross-border payments of rents or royalties in cryptocurrency to a non-resident are subject to a withholding tax of 25%, that may be reduced under an applicable tax treaty.

Personal tax returns are due at the end of April and corporate tax returns are due six months after the fiscal year-end of the corporation.

Namaste readers. It is always said that being a software developer is a lifelong learning affair. Since the trends and technologies get the expire ticket often in the software field, one should be ready to cope up with a sudden change. It is a continuous treadmill where relaxing is seldom a choice.

Apart from building web applications comfortably, a full stack developer should know how to deploy, optimize, automate the application.

Full Stack Development is a Breadth First Search (BFS)

If you study graph theory, there you might have encountered graph traversal algorithms. Every computer science student knows them very well.

BFS (Breadth First Search)

DFS (Depth First Search)

I am here going to produce an analogy which compares full stack development to other specializations in terms of traversal of multiple technologies and fields.

BFS is a traversal algorithm which in the first turn visits all adjacent nodes to a root node and then starts digging deeper.

DFS is a traversal algorithm which first touches the bottom of maximum depth of first child node and then returns backs and starts the process from a second child.

How your learning should be? DFS or BFS?

The answer to this is a personal choice. A Ph.D. student likes a depth first learning because he/she narrow down their work to a single unit at a time. But as a working software professional in 2017, you don’t have the luxury of time to build, test, and fix things. Consulting is a trivial choice for corporates but for startups they cannot create a hundred roles for hundred things.

A full stack development is a breadth first learning where you first try to know how to operate things and then try to deepen your knowledge in that by continuous work. From our school time, we implemented this BFS by studying various subjects at the same time. There is nothing new in this technique.

The picture shows the diversity of areas where a full stack developer works and gains experience. Since he needs to take care everything from the beginning to end of a web application, the developer should get his/her hands dirty with top level nodes first and then dig deeper. The more you learn, the stronger and useful you become to your organization.

In 2017, companies need people with wide range of skills. They are not looking for conservative candidates who has experience in a tool or technology no one knows. Embracing open source knowledge will make recruiters queue for your interview(then consume your services).

Pushing the limits of a web developer

Have you ever thought in the game of Cricket 350+ scores are possible in one day?. In Tennis game too, the serving speed and power hitting are improved. Aggressiveness is doubling every decade to make the sport more interesting. All professions are evolving too. Computer science and software development are no exceptions. In the primitive era, people used to hire a specialist to perform a task. But now, in the cloud computing age the aggression in learning things and making changes is usual.

Like in children’s cartoon Pokemon, how a Pikachu evolves into a Raichu, a normal web developer is evolving into a full stack developer. There are few doubts about this particular area. I am going to clear them in the next section.

Who is a full stack developer?

Full stack development is a relative term not ideal. As a wavelength range in a color spectrum, skills to acquire the status of full stack developer can vary according to the requirements. But in my opinion a developer can become a successful full stack developer if he is:

Able to work with CSS & JS well (Media queries, Single page applications & DOM, ES6). Knows streamlining tools like Grunt, Gulp & Browserify

Knows web frameworks(at least one) in and out Ex: Django or Node JS

Worked with SQL and NoSQL for a considerable amount of time (MySQL, Mongo DB). Can model relations well. Can implement advanced queries and SQL Joins

Knows how to deploy his/her code on AWS EC2 with Apache2 or Nginx as a web server. Should have a working knowledge of Docker and Virtualization.

Can design a web application end to end with many loosely coupled components. Should be brave enough to suggest the architectural changes if he has a valid reasoning to do so.

Choose the trivial good solution and improve it all the time

Can automate release cycles with the knowledge of Chef or Ansible. Automate logging and failure retrieval.

Love to context switch from one domain to another, one technology to another swiftly and be able to finish tasks in the time.

Having basic to medium level knowledge on hybrid mobile app development with JS, Chrome extensions and progressive web apps.

Why should you go for Full Stack Development?

When there is a multitude of career options available, why one should stretch his arms for full stack development. First, it makes you learn new things all the time. Technology is changing briskly and sticking with same work for ages may deprecate your career options. You are more valuable to a team and can assess decisions related to any aspect.

Second, the role pays you more. If you are a full stack developer, chances are more that your paycheck is fat. A salary study from Indeed.com tells that an average full stack developer in San Francisco, CA earns nearly $ 1,30,576 per annum where as a normal web developer makes about $ 94,614

Even in India, the people with skills of full stack development are in full demand in 2017. Indian startup market recognizing the significance of full stack development lately and giving importance. Software companies from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru are posting jobs for full stack developer roles in linkedIn.

Negative points to ponder honestly

Full stack development can also bring few drawbacks and may not suit all kinds of people. It has following disadvantages:

People may call you Jack of All Trades but Master of None. Even though it is partially true, it is your responsibility to keep up with the knowledge you gained. Writing a known technique in a blog, taking notes can help you remember tricks of your current work for later course of time.

Your current working region may not yet adopt this full stack style

For freshers, they need to work and prove in startups to be a Full Stack Developer. Only a few are given freedom for what they do in the beginning stage. So your company decides what you will work on at the starting point of your career. So plot a clear plan before getting out of college
