Post-Match Day Thread: Chelsea 1 - 1 Liverpool
I wasn't going to do this one because I thought I would miss most of the game. As it turns out I did get to see it all and I'm hungover enough that this is going to be a nice little distraction.

As of time of writing Chelsea haven't played. I'll go back and update this when they have.

Christ do City score a lot of goals. 21 is tied-third for the most goals scored for the last 10 champions. That being said, they've played some absolute shite so far. We slip down to second for the first time this season but maintain that unbeaten record. A result against City and we go clear. Bring on next week.
On to the comparisons. The chart below displays the cumulative points totals over the four games:
https://i.imgur.com/5555ca9.png
No longer 100% perfect :( but we're still well ahead of the curve.
The next graph is for goals scored, with Leicester (15/16) in dark blue and Manchester City (17/18) in light blue being our lower and upper figures.
https://i.imgur.com/aveBDbB.png
We drop away from the average again but still no real problems. We've scored in every game so far and we're averaging more than a goal a game so that's all good.
The final graph is goals conceded. Manchester United are both used for comparisons, with 08/09 (upper) and 12/13 (lower) seasons.
https://i.imgur.com/0EHhtQO.png
Despite conceding we're still really good at defence.
I've filled out the spreadsheet a bit more so if you want to have a look it's below:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1D7aM5g9Pqhnt2y58BdFUc4xTp3epreMhKMlpEVgQOdY/edit?usp=sharing
Goals Analysis
I'm changing up the format a little bit. Let me know if you like it, or have any other suggestions.
Hazard 25' 1-0 https://streamja.com/ZvQ6 https://i.imgur.com/QstZIri.jpg Chelsea win the ball back after we commit men forward on the left. Mané has pushed right up and has Wijnaldum supporting. Salah on the other side is also pushed quite high. This leaves a big space on our right. It's not an immediate concern, but it is where the problem comes from. https://i.imgur.com/PKyIBKu.png Luiz has a clear pass directly to Hazard who is unmarked. This is an issue. https://i.imgur.com/2U4by8P.png Trent goes to close Hazard down but doesn't get near enough to really affect anything. For me Salah should be charging back to cover the space that's left. https://i.imgur.com/QdU98WW.png Instead Salah actually stops. He should be able to see the danger here, there's a simple pass through the middle of the pitch and Hazard is making the run onto it. https://i.imgur.com/308S7QH.png Chelsea actually make an extra pass. Trent compounds his original error by bending his run towards the centre. I don't really understand what he's trying to do here - he originally looks like he's going to track Hazard (and i think Trent has the pace to beat him), but instead is... trying to block the pass? Covering the middle? I have no idea. It's a very strange decision. https://i.imgur.com/QCQCDU5.png I don't think there's really anything Gomez can do to stop Hazard's shot. Alisson is left in the worst possible position - Hazard could go high near post or go across him. That's why he doesn't really dive to his left. This is a goal that a very good team can score but we (Trent) certainly helped them.
Sturridge 89' 1-1 https://streamja.com/dkan https://i.imgur.com/aivCXWo.png Let's be honest, there's not much you can analyse about this absolute banger. However, I am kind of interested in how disciplined Chelsea's shape is. They're very much set up in their 4-3-3 (Moses is somewhere on the right wing) and we're having to change our shape to get through them. https://i.imgur.com/Yy9kJGi.png It's a stunning goal because there's literally nothing on. Kepa is central, tall, in a good position to save most shots. Sturridge's only option is to go for the top bin. It's an absolute perfect shot that loops over the keeper. What a goal.
Thoughts
Line Up
I predicted the team correctly! I think the midfield three is probably the best for keeping the bigger teams at arm's length. Wijnaldum in particular does such a good job of disrupting the opposition.
Sadio Mané and Mo Salah
I made a post in the match thread along similar lines, but I am really confused by Klopp's substitutions of Salah over Mané. Salah hasn't been scoring at the rates towards the end of last season but he's still very much involved in the attacking build up. Meanwhile, Mané has been sloppy going forward and for me is not doing enough. Yet, he's the one staying on in games, he's getting the League Cup games etc. It's strange to me.
How Important is This?
A point away at a top 3 rival (see what I did there) is always going to be important. Last season we were bad against the top six, particularly away from home, so it's pleasing to see that we've already gotten 4 points from two games. We need to back this result up with 3 points against City though.
Napoli
Back to the Champions League and what I think is a really intriguing encounter. Napoli aren't the classic Italian defensive team but, they are the pot 4 seed in our group (edit: nope, they're pot 2. Maybe I'm still a little drunk...) and we should be beating them. I can see a couple of changes for this one.
Alisson; Clyne, Gomez, Matip, Robertson; Milner, Fabinho, Keita; Salah, Sturridge, Shaqiri
I can see one of the full backs being changed and I don't want to see Moreno ever again so Clyne comes in for Trent. Matip gives VVD the game off, though it could quite easily be Lovren if he's fit enough. Fabinho might be more suited to European football at this point, but a tricky away might be too far for him. Keita can replace either of Henderson or Milner. Shariqi and Sturridge come in for Firmino and one of Mané or Salah, and as mentioned above I think Mané's been getting away with one so far.
Our next fixture is against Napoli in the Champion's League. The match kicks off on the 3rd of October at 20:00PM(BST)/15:00PM(ET).

Whatever happened to …
… The Flintstones?
I had the “opportunity” to watch cartoons yesterday.  I went searching to see what was on and didn’t recognize any of the offerings so just picked one.  I won’t name names but it sure wasn’t cartoons as I remembered them.
There was no continuous action; it was just computer generated fluff with very little flow and certainly not much of a plot.  I changed to another channel and this time it was some robotic-like thing and very violent for what I would assume was the intended audience.  (Certainly a great deal younger than me.)
Earlier this week, I had made reference to “exit, stage left” in a blog post while talking about dog walking.  It wasn’t technically correct since stage left would have had me walking directly in front of the oncoming car but it seemed appropriate enough.  At least Andy Forgrave thought so in a comment.
It stuck me, upon further thinking, that cartoons from long ago were a different breed than they are today.  Needless to say, with what I saw on television, I just grabbed my phone and played Words with Friends or something more entertaining.  But, I certainly do remember the classic cartoons of my day, The Flintstones coming to mind immediately.  Another thought was that, while my brother and I certainly enjoyed Wilma and Fred, so did my parents.  Watching was truly a family experience.
Not so for me yesterday.
So, for a Sunday morning, your thoughts?
Are you old enough to remember The Flintstones?
The series The Flintstones was reportedly based on a television comedy.  Do you remember which one?
Skill testing question alert.  Can you identify the cartoon character that said the following
That’s All I Can Stands, I Can’t Stands No More
What’s Up Doc?
Beep Beep
Th-Th-Th-That’s All Folks
Yabba Dabba Doo!
I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat
Sufferin Succotash
I’m smarter than the average Bear
Here I Come to Save the Day
Good Grief
Bamm, Bamm
Do any of today’s modern cartoons have any classic lines like the above?
Please share your comedic memories via comment below.
This is part of a regular Sunday series called “Whatever happened to …“.  All of the previous posts are at that link, including a link to the Padlet where you can add your own ideas for a future post.  Go for it!

6 unique things to do in Myanmar on your next holiday
Tumblr media
Do you ever get tired of all the up-to-the-minute technology around you? Feel like escaping the mechanical world? We hear you! While a real-time machine may not quite exist, you can still transport yourself back in time. Book a flight to Myanmar – a nation quite set in another era, waiting to be explored by tourists!
Tumblr media
Source: @lionelng
A visit to Myanmar promises to move the most indifferent of souls. After all, to see a country spend years under military rule, now marching towards peace and preparing to show the world its soft, welcoming side is truly inspirational.
On your itinerary, make sure side aside time to explore the mesmerising sunrise of Bagan in a hot-air balloon, take a heritage walking tour of Yangon and stroll on the iconic U Bein Bridge. We also recommend taking time to explore the local markets around Inle Lake, getting to know the unique life of the people.
Tumblr media

From tourist must-sees to offbeat experiences, don’t miss these things on your trip to Myanmar
1. Visit the Shwedagon Pagoda
Not so unique this may be, but no Myanmar visit can begin without a visit here. Myanmar’s very own Statue of Liberty – Shwedagon Pagoda is the country’s pride, culture window and one of the most important religious sites. You could get blinded by all the gold if you stare at the pagoda’s 325ft zedi (stupa) during the day!
Inside the pagoda, you will see many locals performing series of rituals and tourists being led by guides, all enamoured by the mesmerising architecture. The best part about the Shwedagon Pagoda is that despite the crowds, you get enveloped in serenity and calmness, urging you to sit down and take it all in.
Entry price for foreigners: S$8 (K8,000); hours: 4am-10pm

2. Sample a local blend at one of the many tea houses
If you thought that the Brits loved their tea more than anyone else, you were mistaken. Burmese locals not only love their tea but make it a point to visit the numerous new and old tea shops across Myanmar to sample them.
Tumblr media
Source: @rangoonteahouse
It is the perfect place to ditch those swanky coffee shops and noisy watering holes for quaint tea houses. These tea houses not only have a selection of traditional and newly blended Burmese teas on the menu but also some delicious food options such as mutton pastries, pennyworts salads and steamed buns, all served with a huge smile. Notable tea houses such as Rangoon Tea House and Lucky Seven Tea House are the perfect places to get a glimpse of the Burmese culture and the bygone days.
Average price of tea: S$0.40 (K400)

3. Buy jade
Even though this might sound like the most obvious thing to do when in Myanmar, it won’t be the easiest. While visiting the Jade Market in Mandalay is an unmatchable experience, thanks to all the chaos and ‘rawness’, if you want to buy real jade, it is important to know a few things before you do.
When it comes to jade purity, there are generally three types – A, B and C. Type A refer to stones that are completely untreated, Type B is generally chemically treated and Type C has gone through colour enhancement. Always aim to buy a Type A jadeite. If you are buying jade from a shop, you can ask for a lab proof of the stone being type A, as it is difficult to differentiate between the various options.
Study the important factors determining the quality of jade – colour, transparency, clarity and texture – before you plan to buy one.
Understand that ‘flaws’ are more-often-than-not a proof that the piece of jade you are considering is genuine. If the piece you are looking at has a unique characteristic such as an uneven colour patch or a stand-out texture, it does not mean it is fake.
Tumblr media

4. Explore a well-preserved piece of history
If you are looking for an activity that is both adventurous and historical, your hunt ends with the Po Win Daung Caves. These multi-centuries-old, man-made caves are nothing like you have ever seen. Imagine being barefoot, weeding your way through over 900 decorated caves and viewing stunning carvings of Buddha at every turn!
Most of the statues and paintings here date back to the 14th Century. This archaeological wonder is located around 25kms away from Monywa but might take awhile to reach, thanks to the rugged rural road conditions.
It is advisable to hire a guide to understand the historical importance of the place. It can get tiring to walk through it all, but it is well worth it. Carry loads of water and beware of the fierce monkeys in the area.
Tumblr media

Entry fee: S$2.5 approximately
5. Swim in the crystal-clear waters of Ngapali Beach
If you thought Thailand and Philippines grab all the awards when it comes to housing the most stunning beaches in Southeast Asia, you were wrong. Myanmar’s Ngapali Beach (pronounced as Napally), with its sugary white sand laced with palm trees, will make beach bums fall in love with it in an instant.
Choose to snorkel, swim, fish or kayak in the azure waters. If you want to get a taste of the local life, head to the adjoining fishing village of Jate Taw. Another must-do thing here is to sample the deliciously fresh seafood at one of the local beachside restaurants.
Tumblr media
Source: @whereisphilipp
6. Go hiking
Hikers love Myanmar and there is little doubt why. The country offers numerous options for adventure trekking and various scenic walking trails. Whether it is exploring floating villages while walking from Inle Lake to Kalaw or viewing one of the best sunsets of your life while trekking on the Hsipaw hills, trekking in Myanmar deserves all the attention it gets from locals and tourists.
Money matters
US dollars are widely accepted in Myanmar, and you’ll be able to pay for most things in USD. Have some Myanmar Kyats with you as some of the less popular places may prefer the local currency. Money changers in Myanmar generally accept Singapore dollars, but it’s safest if you have US dollars instead.
With the exception of hotels and restaurants, your credit card will have limited use. When booking your flight and hotels, make use of travel credit cards like the DBS Altitude Card, Citi PremierMiles Card or UOB PRVI Miles Card. To get the best deals, always look for discounts or bonus miles that these cards offer when you book with partners like Expedia or Agoda.

This season I want to get more of an average of player ratings, so I'm using a variety of sources to get the average rating. I'm going to carry this on throughout the season as well, so we get a bigger grasp of how the players are performing. If anyone wants me to throw in an extra source then by all means I will.
The subs didn't rated in every source so I dropped them from this, but I'll still keep track of them.

Thoughts
Line Up
Klopp rewards a fine team performance in the first game with an unchanged team. The only question before the game was if he would keep the three in midfield or introduce Henderson or Fabinho. For me I had no issues with keeping the team as is. After the lineups were announced the questions were about Fabinho being dropped from the squad. To rehash my comment from yesterday: this is a squad game. Right now we have 20 players who could all get into the squad and only 18 positions, so everyone's going to have to take a spell outside at some point.
Milner Penalty + Call
It's just so obviously a penalty, but as some melts (fortunately none of yous) think it's not lets actually assess it. There are four incidents that could all be called for penalties.
https://i.imgur.com/1i9fHEm.png
Firstly, Salah rolls Sakho and Sakho pulls back his shoulder.
https://i.imgur.com/IlaFbYv.png
Secondly, he pulls his shirt as Salah goes to shoot.
https://i.imgur.com/sHeaBg0.png
Thirdly, he hooks Salah's foot roughly at the same time.
https://i.imgur.com/3qkHHwl.png
Finally, he clips Salah's foot again.
All of these are fouls. All of these are penalties.
Mané Goal
This goal is so, so important, not only for the result but from where we get it from. It starts with Lallana giving away a free kick wide right. Palace whip it in and VVD clears it out. What I love then is this exchange between VVD and the ref:
https://i.imgur.com/9RIj8k9.png
https://i.imgur.com/j4UCtZC.png
https://i.imgur.com/o7hmn6Q.png
Anyway, the ball comes in, and true to his word VVD gets up and clears it the the open Salah:
https://i.imgur.com/AZ5s1Q6.png
From there it's dead easy. Salah and Mané streak forward and Palace have no-one back:
https://i.imgur.com/y6uQtJW.png
We all know what happens next. Mané sprints the pitch, takes it round the keeper, and slots it home. Lovely.
The two calmest men in the world
Alisson and VVD. I already love this pairing. Neither of them are bothered by anything. On one occasion Zaha tried to close down Alisson and I'm not even sure if he cared.
A poor performance from the front three?
It's interesting that I think the front three performed poorly as a group, but individually two of them had good games. Salah was involved all over, winning the penalty and setting up the goal, having bits and pieces but without getting a goal himself. Mané gets the goal and was generally very good, snapping into tackles etc. Firmino was the only one who you can say wasn't up to his usual standard, but he was still in the game.
Midfield
Mostly, I just want to say that Keita is absolutely outstanding and I'm definitely going to put this in every one of these.
Brighton
I think Klopp might go same again, but I also think Klopp might make a few changes. Maybe this is a game for Sturridge or Shaqiri; maybe it's a game for Clyne or Moreno; maybe it's a game for Henderson or Fabinho. What I love is I don't think any of those changes would weaken this side. Three more points and we're 9/9. It's easy this, isn't it?
Our next fixture is against Brighton in the Premier League. The match kicks off on the 25th of August at 17:30PM(BST)/12:30PM(ET).

Check out that big lovely one next to us. Check out that 0 in the "Lost" column. Ain't that a pretty site?
6 points separate us and the three teams in a fight for 3rd place. United make a brief appearance before Everton play tomorrow night.
On to the comparisons. The chart below displays the cumulative points totals over the games so far:

Keep on picking up those 3 points.
The next graph is for goals scored:

Woo, back touching Leicester's "record". We've now had two weeks running where we're way above the average and that does wonders for our goal difference.
The final graph is goals conceded:
https://i.imgur.com/a5uYBoj.png
We're still setting the record. Goal difference is nice and high too.

Goals Analysis
Salah 25' (0-1) https://streamja.com/A1Nn https://i.imgur.com/qbxXaSc.png We'll pick this up with van Dijk on the ball in the center circle. I mostly want to talk about the shape for this goal. We effectively played a 4-2-2-2, which depending on the set up can mean you cede the center of the field to the opposition. Take our shape here. We have the CBs, CMs, and AMs all roughly in a line. Bournemouth are playing a classic 4-4-2 which should mean they can dominate those middle areas. https://i.imgur.com/iNa0G7X.png What flips this is this pass from Matip. Chris from the Redmen TV has done several videos on this in the past, but essentially Matip is great at playing these sort of balls that take out opposition players. In one pass Matip eliminates 5 (at least) Bournemouth players. https://i.imgur.com/ZK69ukE.png Now with some quick passing we are 3 v 2 on Bournemouth's CBs. https://i.imgur.com/IGC3UbJ.png Firmino then does what I called for last week, and took the early shot. Yes - Salah is offside, but you have to make your own luck. By shooting early Firmino manages to catch Begovic off guard, and he spills the ball into Salah who has gambled on just that. Sometimes the best way to break down a compact, defensive side is to really just hit balls at the keeper and test them.
Salah 48' (0-2) https://streamja.com/mEd9 https://i.imgur.com/pwZndhF.png Another example of the high press working. The only pass on here is back to Francis on the touchline. https://i.imgur.com/d5iFGji.png This should be an easy pass around Firmino releasing Bournemouth in the middle. https://i.imgur.com/e95eB4t.png However, Cook gets it all wrong, allowing Firmino to pounce on the ball and release Salah. https://i.imgur.com/BjjVqGu.png Salah manages to evade a number of poor challenges and slot it home in the corner.
Cook (og) 68' (0-3) https://streamja.com/4EMw https://i.imgur.com/XBSJi18.png The key to this goal is how panicked Bournemouth are in defence. They've already been punished by Salah once so the last thing that they want to do is let him have a free run at their back line. https://i.imgur.com/h4GP4Kw.png Firmino controls and plays Salah through again. https://i.imgur.com/i4D1XQl.png I just love how he directs traffic here. I'm not even sure there's anyone close enough to make this run. https://i.imgur.com/LLEbaYq.png Robertson lays it back to Fabinho who has time to find the pass back through the lines. https://i.imgur.com/iC8nEDI.png I'm going to say Robertson is clever with the cross. It should be going right down the Corridor of Uncertainty - basically along the six yard line where the defenders can't really get a touch on it without risking an own goal. Robertson instead plays it slightly behind that line. This means that the defenders have to turn whilst running backwards to try and clear the ball. Ultimately, this is why Cook miskicks the ball right into his own net.
Salah 77' (0-4) https://streamable.com/46v5e https://i.imgur.com/EOXK5l6.png This is just a nice pass (and some cleverness) from Lallana to take the ball on his chest and hit the early pass inside the two center backs. https://i.imgur.com/22GXAyw.png You do have to say that Salah puts an arm on Cook that perhaps knocks him off balance when he tries to pass it back to the keeper. https://i.imgur.com/yXtDA2R.png I feel like Salah of a month ago would have tried to take this on first time and slot it in the corner here. https://i.imgur.com/mETAZHs.png Or maybe go far post here. https://i.imgur.com/HCIlK38.png Instead he goes for this delicious outside of the foot shot that completely befuddles Ake and picks up his hat trick.
Thoughts
Line Up
This is the second game in a row I think Klopp has switched formation to the 4-2-2-2, and boy is it working. Milner comes in at right back which I feel like this sub has been calling for for about 3 years now, we see Keita and Fabinho on the pitch together, and Salah and Firmino up top. I really felt that this worked well. It was quite easy to switch over to the normal 4-3-3 when necessary with Firmino sliding over to LW, but mostly kept him up front where he's most useful.
Salah's a Bit Moody
Don't really have anything to say about this, just thought it was odd. First one I could understand because maybe he knew he was offside, but give us a smile when you put away the hat trick Mo lad.
Napoli
Another conundrum for Klopp (and me). How does he adjust for this must-win game with United on the horizon? There's some obvious choices, and a hell of a lot of mystery. I'd be happy with this:
Alisson; Trent, Matip, VVD, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho; Keita, Mané; Firmino, Salah
Keeping the 4-2-2-2 shape as it seems to be working. Matip retains his position at CB with Lovren conspicuously absent. Milner gets a rest and I've gone for a midfield of Henderson and Fabinho, but it could quite easily be Wijnaldum. Shaqiri drops out for Mané, Salah and Firmino are up top again. Tidy.
Our next fixture is against Napoli in the Champions League. The match kicks off on the 11th of December at 20:00PM(GMT)/15:00PM(ET).

There's a real mixed bag this week. Keita rightly edges the MOTM, although Milner and big Virge are close behind. The fans give Moreno more credit than I think he deserved, but I think Origi is hard done by.

Mad this year isn't it? Us and City now with a comfortable gap, whilst 3rd to 5th keep changing every week. I'm not sure we'll ever catch up on goal difference with City but fingers crossed Chelsea can take a few points off them and we can win at Bournemouth to try and go top. Not sure if Spurs will ever draw a game either.
Everton are just about there but to be honest there's a clear top five and then a very prominent gap from 6th to 13th. Midtable for United, lovely.
On to the comparisons. The chart below displays the cumulative points totals over the four games:
https://i.imgur.com/duR5uLx.png
This is actually one of the lower average points weeks (1.9), so it's good to get that win.
The next graph is for goals scored, with Leicester (15/16) in dark blue and Manchester City (17/18) in light blue being our lower and upper figures.
https://i.imgur.com/QK1I6R1.png
We're still playing with that damn lower boundary. This week was better though and we might be able to compound it with a good game against a middling Bournemouth defence.
The final graph is goals conceded. Manchester United are both used for comparisons, with 08/09 (upper) and 12/13 (lower) seasons.
https://i.imgur.com/vfiiGU9.png
Not sure if conceding another goal keeps us as the best defence in Europe, but City conceding kept us one behind (ahead?) of them.
I have also started keeping tabs on goal difference. I won't share the graph here (you can go and have a look if you want), but we are slightly ahead of the average (24 v 22.9) so that's good.

Goals Analysis
Cork 54' (1-0) https://streamja.com/PGJE https://i.imgur.com/wUpGw1t.png I've struggled to find an alternative angle of this which shows the offside and foul - but I'm sure they're out there somewhere. Anyway, what's important is how this ends up in the back of the net. The grey line marks the "keepers" area. There's Milner on the front post, then the three big lads in a row just on the edge of the six yard box, and a gap at the back post. This is where Alisson should have control - he doesn't have to climb over his own players to get the ball. Trent is at the back post and needs to stop his man. https://i.imgur.com/nCC6GUQ.png Unfortunately, he can't do that, and is out muscled. This allows the Burnley player to head into the six yard box. Helpfully, all of Liverpool's players have held their line. It's fairly clear that there's at least one Burnley player a good yard offside, and another who is just leaning offside. The linesman should be able to see this. https://i.imgur.com/BfCb3zE.png There's a question about Alisson's positioning, but it's fairly obvious he's reacted to the Burnley player directly in front of him - who crucially doesn't get a touch on the ball. This means that the man at the far post is still offside. Alisson making the save does not change this. https://i.imgur.com/mtz7z60.png The moment that man goes towards the ball he influences Alisson, whether or not he's the one to actually play it is irrelevant. Alisson may have possession, but the only picture I've seen was inconclusive (his hands were on top - but does that mean he has possession? One fo the actual refs).
Milner 62' (1-1) https://streamable.com/wuw77 https://i.imgur.com/Q3zNI10.jpg This is a lovely team goal. It's really worth mentioning how far Milner runs to get on the end of it. Here he is filling in at right back. https://i.imgur.com/q1zWNpX.png He plays it into Trent who quickly turns it around to Shaqiri. The key here is that nobody stops - there's movement across the park. https://i.imgur.com/XuDQCCC.png Shaqiri turns and sees Keita in space. Milner continues his run into the centre of the field. On the far side there's a man over (Moreno). https://i.imgur.com/UzUc5nB.png Shaqiri, however, feints the pass to Keita and sprays it out wide to Moreno. https://i.imgur.com/5DYk9HY.png The ball isn't a great one, but it gives time for Keita to pull out to give some support. Milner has now gotten close to the goal. https://i.imgur.com/mZWwphr.png Keita brings it inside, Moreno gives him the option on the wing and Milner in the centre. This is textbook on how to breakdown a packed defence (Burnley have (count them) 8! men inside the box). You either need to pull them wide or create spaces outside the box to take a shot. The key is to keep moving. https://i.imgur.com/zARQ0NP.png Origi receives the ball, lays it off to Milner, who fires into the corner. It's a really well worked goal with plenty of inventiveness and quick passing all across the field. Klopp must've been buzzing.
Firmino 69' (1-2) https://streamja.com/pE69 https://i.imgur.com/f1qH8jr.png There's really only two options with free kicks as centrally as this - play it short or try and get to the wings and cross it in. It's deviously simple but incredibly hard to pull off. This time it works excellently. Trent floats it to the back post. https://i.imgur.com/4uZWsbZ.png Van Dijk manages to stretch and get his toe on it to pull it back across goal. https://i.imgur.com/rtl2YGn.png Firmino is there to tap home. If I were a Burnley fan I'd ask why nobody followed him in, and why Hart didn't get a touch on the ball. But I'm not.
Shaqiri 90+1' (1-3) https://streamable.com/ewyul https://i.imgur.com/LoGxvor.png Just to reiterate my point - same defensive set up as the corner earlier. Only difference is that Trent isn't picking up anyone in particular. https://i.imgur.com/oNMV7pF.png There's a bit of pinball, but this is an astonishing save. He has no right to grab that. https://i.imgur.com/XhDW0gp.jpg Alisson actually hesitates before coming to get this, thinking it was going out. https://i.imgur.com/8Qwsgtb.png Instead he jumps around the Burnley player to keep the ball in play. https://i.imgur.com/hmGgdur.png As soon as he does Salah is pointing where he wants it. He's hungry for another goal in the 92nd minute. https://i.imgur.com/0MAYEI2.png Alisson releases it to Sturridge, who plays a wonderfully disguised ball for Salah. He drops it in an area where the Burnley defender is either going to have to come for it (and thus leave Shaqiri unmarked) or drop back and let Salah have a free run at the goal. https://i.imgur.com/iYzVCgP.png An outside of the boot pass later and Shaqiri is free to fire into the back of the net.
Thoughts
Line Up
Well then. That was unexpected. Klopp rests Robertson and Trent, brings in Henderson, Milner, and Keita into the midfield, and plays a completely new front three.
The formation is an interesting one. I thought it was a 4-3-3, I've seen the stats sites give it as a 4-4-2, it could have been a 4-3-2-1 with Origi and Shaqiri in behind Sturridge. Either way it was a bit of a shock.
Sturridge and Origi
I'm interested to get opinions on how they performed. I thought Origi had the better first half, he was dropping deep to get the ball and play it on. However, Sturridge clearly had the better second half, and overall had the better stat line.
Bournemouth
In many ways, Klopp has worked himself into a bit of a conundrum. I think Fabinho and Keita have both done more than enough to be in conention. Does he go with them as a partnership or does he have to put someone else in to help out? He might go like this:
Alisson; Trent, Lovren, van Dijk, Robertson; Keita, Henderson, Fabinho; Salah, Firmino, Mané
Our next fixture is against Bournemouth in the Premier League. The match kicks off on the 8th of December at 12:30PM(GMT)/07:30AM(ET).

Goal difference is a slight concern with City putting plenty past the random pub teams they've been playing. For us it's a bit of a reverse of the norm - usually we have a lot more in both columns because we score but can't defend. This season we're generally keeping it tight at the back but only putting a couple in the other end. At this stage it's the points that matter though.

Thoughts
Line Up
A couple of changes, including one in the formation. Shaqiri and Matip replace Milner and Gomez. The latter is a fairly simple rotation, getting a few minutes into Matip's legs in a game where we really shouldn't be expecting to need to defend to much. The former results in a couple of interesting tactical decisions. Salah very much becomes the central point of attack with Shaqiri playing out wide and Firmino switches to the wing. I'm going to come on to the impact of that later.
Hoedt Own Goal
Discussion https://i.imgur.com/S15m297.png This goal comes from a corner so the positioning is a little bit out compared to our "normal" set up. However, it's interesting to see just how wide our forwards are. Both Shaqiri and Salah are well known for cutting back in on their favoured foot, and both have got a lot of room on the flanks to do just that. https://i.imgur.com/U5CajoK.png The fact that nobody has picked up Shaqiri here is absolutely shocked. Mané has time to bring the ball back, turn, and find a ball for him to run on to in a really dangerous area. https://i.imgur.com/6e1ix22.png Shaqiri has two options. Either a) he puts in a cross right across the face of goal which will be very difficult to defend, or cut it back onto his right and curl one into the top bin. https://i.imgur.com/px7JupW.png I'm pretty sure he's intending to curl one but mishits it, instead it ricochets off the defender, Hoedt can't sort his feet out and it's an own goal. Lovely!
Matip Goal
Discussion https://i.imgur.com/9NByzzf.png This is dead simple. It's an outswinging corner from Trent to the penalty spot. Matip attacks, Vestergaard tries to defend but is shockingly outjumped, Matip fires it high into the corner.
Salah Goal
Discussion https://i.imgur.com/YrC8DiZ.png Again, not much to say about this one, other than look at our four attacks all running in, and look at the Saints defenders. Only one of them is bothering to follow up, and he's at the back post. That's shocking defending.
Shaqiri and a Half Time Sub
I've taken these from the wonderful @11tegen11 on twitter.
Liverpool average positions: https://i.imgur.com/l3Xqz1L.png
Southampton average positions: https://i.imgur.com/t7M1VpI.png
What you can quickly see from these is how narrow our front four is, they're almost standing on top of each other. Southampton, however, are very spread out. In a 4-2-3-1 system like we were ostensibly playing you'd normally expect the team set up like this:
https://i.imgur.com/mIvoE8O.png
The full backs and wide men are overlapping, the CMs spread out, and the AM drops back to help out. What we saw in the first half was that some of this was happening, but a lot of the defensive side of it wasn't. It ended up more like this:
https://i.imgur.com/rib963D.png
Due to our dominance in possession the full backs were pushed very far forward, essentially becoming wide midfielders. However, as the front men weren't dropping back to help out (again, as a result of our possession) that left us very exposed in the back. Look again at Southampton's average positions - they had us doubled up in wide areas. They were able to get in behind and get crosses in that did cause us some issues.
Did Shaqiri deserve to come off? Absolutely not, but I don't have any real complaints with the decision. Shaqiri gets his first half at Anfield with everyone raving about him, he's likely going to get most if not all of the League Cup game on Wednesday, and the front three get another half to essentially dick around. Speaking of...
A Quiet Second Half
This is more of a personal moan, because I saw loads of people in the match thread yesterday (and elsewhere) complaining at how quiet that second half is. I'd just like to remind everyone that a quiet second half when you're 3-0 up is absolutely fine. Southampton had their first shot on target in the 90th minute. They had more possession in the second half than they did in the first, but did absolutely nothing with it. That meant our lads were able to take a breather and recover after the exertions of last week. I'm 100% fine with that. We could have gone out to try and pad the goal difference, but at what cost? We've seen for years the late goals conceded and the injuries in the second half. At this point there's no need to take that risk.
Chelsea
I do not expect Klopp will make these changes, but it's what I'd quite like.
Alisson; Clyne, Gomez, Matip, Moreno; Henderson, Fabinho, Keita; Shaqiri, Sturridge, Mané
A few changes in each area of the field, but still some continuity that should deliver the win. It also means that we don't show our hand to Chelsea ahead of next weekend.
Our next fixture is against Chelsea in the League Cup. The match kicks off on the 26th of September at 19:45PM(BST)/14:45PM(ET).
