Tumblr media
Spinal canal stenosis refers to the narrowing of the spinal canal in the body. The condition can develop either at the level of the lumbar vertebrae or the cervical vertebrae, the former being the most common version. Cervical spinal stenosis is the more dangerous of the two. People suffering from spinal stenosis feel pain in the shoulders, arms, hands and the region below the buttocks. It is estimated that up to 500,000 US citizens suffer from some form of spinal stenosis, which comes to around 5 patients for every 1,000 people older than 50 years. Risks of Spinal Canal Stenosis As with any other spinal disorders, aging highly increases the chance of a spinal stenosis. The space in the spinal canal can be restricted by an excessive growth of bony spurs or the thickening of spinal ligaments. People who suffer from spondylolisthesis or osteoarthritis are also at higher risk of the disorder. If there is an abnormal growth of tumors in the spinal cord region, it can also restrict the spinal column and result in spinal stenosis. Some people may also have the condition by birth. And if you have been involved in any accident which resulted in fractures of the spine, you are at risk of suffering from spinal stenosis. Ayurvedic Treatment for Spinal Canal Stenosis Rajyapana Basti is said to be a very beneficial remedy for spinal stenosis. The Basti material is made from about 18 constituents including honey, rock salt, rasna, bibhitaki, cow milk, pig fat, etc. Before Basti is administered, a swedana or steam bath is conducted to relax the person and relieve them of any pains. The entire treatment is said to correct the vata disorder in a person, improving body functions and minimizing the effects of spinal stenosis. Other traditional procedures like herbal powder massage, medicated oil massage, vasthi, etc. are also recommended to be an effective way to deal with the condition.
