Taking a sightseeing break on a traditional log chair at Furnas Lagoon in the Azores. @barberjoaorochaand @barber.m.correiashowed us around parts of São Miguel island such as this spot in Furnas. 

The Furnas Lagoon is a popular place for tourists to try some local cuisine, Furnas stew, that is cooked in large pots buried into the hot volcanic ground. Marco told us his family used to visit the lagoon when he was a kid. The family would enjoy the area while the stew slow cooked for up to seven hours in the ground. 

We tried another local tradition in Furnas, a natural hot spring cooked corn on the cob 🌽 You can find vendors selling this and chestnuts near the volcanic caldrons.

Amazing shot with the drone today was scary to return it back since i had a compas malfunction and return to home was going somewhere else but in the end it made it safe and sound and was worth the heart beats and the running to try to recover it. #azores #drone #mavicdrone #droneshot #portugal #portugaltravel #travel #travelportugal #azores #azorestravel #islandlife

Season’s Greetings!  Can you believe we are already at the end of the year?  We will be releasing my last haircut video of 2018 on Saturday, December 8th.  Filmed in the beautiful Azores, our final destination, with our friend João Rocha at his barbershop in Ponta Delgada.  

João is very passionate about barbering and absolutely loves his work.  He grew up on the island of Terceira which is where he opened his first barbershop.  Approximately a year ago, he opened his second shop in Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel.  We loved the Azores and are thankful to everyone we met for their incredible hospitality.

So in case you are wondering we filmed this haircut video around 5½ weeks after my last haircut in Prague with Mariana.  During those 5 weeks we were in Morocco as well as Madeira before arriving in the Azores.

While we were in the Azores, @barberjoaorochaand @barber.m.correiatold us about the abandoned 5-star Monte Palace hotel overlooking Lagoa Verde (The Green Lagoon) and Lagoa Azul (the Blue Lagoon).  The hotel was originally built in the late 1980s as an exclusive retreat to draw tourists into the Azores.  Let’s just say the plan was a little ahead of global travel and tourism trends.

The hotel managed to stay operational for about a year before it closed.  For more than a decade the property was patrolled by security, but eventually that came to an end.  It was rumored to be a perfect 80s time warp when the locals gained access in the mid-2000s but this did not last long as the property was raided for anything inside.  Even the old tube TVs and bed mattresses were taken.

Of course we were fascinated by this and had to go see it!  The hotel is an empty shell now with rumors of being renovated.  Derelict or not, the location of this hotel gives amazing views down towards the lagoons.

A hundred thousand thanks to everyone who has taken the time to watch, like, and comment on our latest haircut video that we filmed with João Rocha in the Azores ❤️ This video has already reached over 110,000 views in less than a week! 🙌🏼

João Rocha told us how when he opened his first barbershop on Terceira island, he was "afraid of everything." It was a very small shop and he didn't spend much money. It was only a chair and a mirror. It was the bare minimum because he was "afraid of not being good afraid of not having clients." He didn't do any advertising, make any business cards, nor create a social media presence on Facebook or Instagram for his business. The only thing he thought about doing was to do good haircuts. He also thought if he did very good haircuts for a friend, their friends would ask them where they got their haircut and they will come. João's shop was not in the center of the city. He was in a village, yet people began coming from the town to the village to cut their hair. This was just the beginning that catapulted him to the next level. The barbershop was growing and he added a second chair. Spreading the word by mouth "I think is the true advertising."

Three years later João opened his second barbershop in Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel island! It was in this shop that we met João and filmed the haircut video 😊 We also filmed a beard trim video that we will be releasing on YouTube tomorrow.
