January🌹
This month has three particular traits: the veneration of women and mothers, blessings and protections, and, not mentioned, as it does not apply to my lifestyle, making certain the provisions are enough for the rest of the winter.
- New moon in Capricorn, the winter of the cycle
-7 - Orthodox Christmas rites; ancestor veneration; last days dedicated to the dead before the year turns to the living
- Babji kashy, Women's porridges; a day dedicated to mothers and midwives, who were traditionally brought porridge on this day. By extension, veneration of Theotokos. Midwives, being at the crossroads of medical and folk knowledge, often functioned as carriers of ancestral wisdom
- First quarter in Aries, spring of the cycle
- Miasojed, the Meat-eater; meat is allowed; to be dedicated to filling up and getting together with those closest to you
- Day of Terrors, when unclean powers run free, and one must make certain their protections are updated. Scary stories are shared in order to shield oneself from fear
-14 - Malanka, Old New Year
- What you boast of, you shall lose; a day for humble joy and blessings for the home
- Full moon in Cancer, summer of the cycle
- A family visit to the bathhouse, as well as tidying up the home
- Last quarter in Libra, autumn of the cycle
- Sorcerers' Day; legend has it, on this day sorcerers pass knowledge on to their students, the rest being, therefore, in greater danger of becoming a test subject. By this time the day grows notably longer, heralding spring
It is a personal calendar based on astronomical and astrological events, Ukrainian and Russian folk practices, and personal insight. It does not encapsulate the entire variety and detail of customs available or my reasoning, nor of my plans for the month.
