I'm seeing the Tom and Simon pics and they reminded me of that glorious day when Simon said something (can't recall what exactly) but people took it out of context, ran with it and made Tom look like an asshole (as usual because media and people as a whole used to love to shit on him before Maverick) and Simon was like "fuck off" with whole chest and was like you tell them, Simon. It felt nice to have someone call them out

YEAH it was about Tom joking around on set that people then took seriously and literally, and you can tell Simon was just having none of it. he had to do it again recently defending Tom joking with Tilly (Simon's daughter) about not needing exams and to skip her GCSEs to attend the London premiere (tho the comment was attempting to be on Tom's "side").

Emily Blunt has had to defend Tom over a joke too, about Tom telling her "don't be such a pussy" when she was about to cry over how heavy the edge of tomorrow exosuit was, bc he knew it'd make her laugh and release some tension for her. it's absurd that people got mad over it and Emily had to write a public letter clarifying that it was a joke and that she and Tom are very good friends.

it's just really tiring how people can't seem to see Tom as a normal human being who jokes around sometimes, I can't imagine how it much feel for Simon and Emily having to deal with that as actual friends of his.

Hot take. Reviewers that don't understand Gabriel is meant to be a tool of the AI that Ethan is trying to destroy. I see people liking the AI and having a problem with him because compared to other villains like Solomon Lane he feels shallower but I'm pretty sure that's the point. He's not the main villain, the AI is, he's simply the facilitator. I guess that because is not a corporeal thing some people might not take it into account but idk

Why are people misgendering Tom though? Since when did that become a thing and why the hell people do it? General rule of thumb: don't misgender anyone, it's not that complicated

it's the, for me, very disturbing trend in fandoms lately to refer to male characters and celebrities with she/her pronouns and terms like "milf" and "babygirl", usually due to physical traits and characteristics that are traditionally considered feminine. it's just gender essentialism 2.0 and I hate it so much.

my two-decade long relationship with this series means that i'm too attached to all the characters for me to really hate any of them 😂 but if we go by character i really don't give much of a fuck about, and i probably would enjoy saving them from a pride of ravenous lions the least, it's probably Amuro/Furuya/Bourbon/whatever 😌

3. A character I want to carry around in a little jar and study like a bug

man there are so many good candidates for this bc so many characters in this series look normal but are actually fucking weird. any of the Black Org for example. Yuusaku bc what the fuck how does that man even make the decisions that he does. any of the police characters???? can i have a jar of each character that i switch out every week or so

13. The non-canon pairing I find the most intriguing

having started this series as a kid, i'm very attached to all the canon couples. that being said i'm extremely fond of heishin and i think the greater teen detectives + friends polycule is a fantastic concept and they would all be down for it. and also i hate to admit it but there's something about furukaza. i really only find myself caring about Furuya when he's with Kazami 😂

Just watched Dead Reckoning and had a blast, but one thing that I noticed is that Ethan's character seems more gentle as the series progressed.

If we compare this current Ethan with his younger counterpart, it seems that he is softer around the edges, calmer, and even somewhat tired.

I mean, I don't need proof Tom is one hell of an actor, but delivered so much in this movie. I loved him with Hayley and how much his character seems to have changed

anon Ethan is SO tired he just wants to rest!! he's been tired since mi3, honestly, and he's been wanting out since mi1

I do think mi1 and mi2, now armed with our powers of hindsight and ability to view the series and Ethan's character as a whole, aren't the best reflection of how Ethan is. in mi1 he is freshly traumatized, grappling with the death of his entire team that he obviously was very close with. in the few minutes that we saw of him before the mission, he is also very soft with his teammates, but he has an energy about him that I can only describe as...unbroken. someone who still hadn't gone through major losses. (this is partly why I don't vibe a lot with his retconned past in DR1, where he supposedly had experienced great loss prior to joining the IMF. personally, it doesn't quite fit with my interpretation of him in mi1, but I think given time I'll be able to reconcile with it and make them both work).

in mi2, he's in his self-destructive, angry at the system that trapped him, leaning into his worse tendencies while still not having recovered from the trauma of mi1 phase. he's rough and defiant and antagonistic towards the IMF on purpose. he wants out, but he didn't get to leave, so he's being very very difficult about it. it's not until the end of mi2 that he finds the world worth saving again, and by the time we get to mi3, I think that's the closest we see of him being like early mi1, just with the added weight of the trauma he's hopefully had time to parse through or completely compartmentalize, could be either or.

but yes I have a lot of feelings about Ethan Hunt and his character progression throughout the series, but in the end I think the core of him has never really changed. and I love that about him so much.

I love them I love them so much. Adonis is the only person Souma refers to by given name....even tho his surname would SURELY be easier for Souma to remember. they keep mentioning each other in the home screen voicelines. they're both dating and don't need to be dating at the same time. I will never be normal about them.

I got a bingo which. checks out bc they contain multitudes. it's so fascinating to me that they have all the makings and components to be SUPER messy and toxic and fucked up, like the potential is all RIGHT THERE and you can easily make it so by just shifting things a little bit to the right, but in reality they just...aren't. they wholeheartedly love and care about each other and lift each other up and the other three will drag Ibara kicking and screaming into admitting it sooner or later. Hiyori and Nagisa always say they love each other and Hiyori refers to Jun as "his" and Nagisa has point blank told Jun that Hiyori loves him and Ibara wrote the lyrics to Exceed to help Jun out of his slump and the other three all force Ibara to eat and rest properly and Hiyori and Jun almost ran into a fire thinking that Ibara was trapped in it and Ibara's palpable relief at being reunited with them and Nagisa calling the other three the place where he belongs and it took them 0.3 seconds to realize Nagisa had been replaced and and and and. god they're So Much.

i like tom cruise bc he's dedicated to his craft and hardworking and loves movies and filmmaking so much. and he always lifts people up and is kind and respectful to everyone and everyone who's ever actually worked with him only has positive things to say. and i like his movies bc he always brings his acting a game no matter the genre or project. he's a joy to watch on screen and a delight to hear about behind the scenes and he inspires me to love movies and filmmaking more.

so I've waited until I'm stuck on a bus for about an hour to answer this on my phone bc otherwise it's going to turn into a 10 page propaganda manifesto with screenshots and I do not actually have the spoons for that.

1. What made you ship it?

my beloved friend @twotwinks was playing through Ace Attorney Investigations and liveblogging it at me. and at one point jhe sent me a screenshot where Itonokogiri swears to follow Mitsurugi through thick and thin. and then was promptly dragged away from him kicking and screaming.

jhe then started microdosing me with content about these two in the games, and after I told my treasured friend @maverickcalf about it they also started putting posts about them on my dash. and it took about three weeks before I caved and read through the entire ao3 tag of the ship in one night and. the rest is history, as they might say.

ive always had a passing interest in Gyakuten Saiban but just never got around to getting into it properly. I'd bought and played through a bit of GS6 when it first came out but didn't get very far bc of my limited Japanese then. when MT got really into it I thought it was the perfect chance for me to familiarize myself with the franchise (nothing better than a friend that infodumps) but I. never expected to fall into the franchise as hard as I did, especially not in This Specific Way. this will now be my entire personality for the next three years.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

god where do I START.

I think what really does strike me is in the first game, how much they clearly trust each other. Itonokogiri is Loud about it so we know clearly where he stands, but while Mitsurugi doesn't say it out loud there are so many scenes where his actions dictate he does trust Itonokogiri. small instances that makes you go HUH. like the fact that he feels bad about keeping things from Itonokogiri in Turnabout Goodbyes!! and the fact that Naruhodou suspected it would hurt him and WEAPONIZED that against him. like. GOD. WHAT THE FUCK. HOW IS THAT CANON.

another thing I love so much about them is that despite fitting the stereotypical roles of a smart character + a not so bright character, Mitsurugi is never condescending to Itonokogiri. it delighted me so much in Gyakuten Kenji 1 where Itonokogiri would have a question about something, and Mitsurugi would just explain it very plainly and straightforwardly to him, without judgement. it means so much to me!!! he never calls him dumb or stupid to his face!! even in his thoughts the most he does is phrase it tactfully in a way that doesn't outright insult Itonokogiri whenever he does something unexpected. I just. oughhh I love them so much.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

oh boy do I.

having only played the games in Japanese and only learned about the changes made in the English version through my friends, I strongly believe the English localization of the franchise is at best a pale comparison to the original and at worst a purposeful character assassination of many of the characters, ESPECIALLY Itonokogiri. to me, Ace Attorney is a completely different franchise from Gyakuten Saiban and the characters in the localization are not and will never be the same characters as the ones in the original. I respect the people in the fandom that love version of the ship and the characters in the localization but I need people to understand. they have a very different vibe from the original version of them. because Itonokogiri, a Japanese man, not understanding what a ceiling fan (katakana) is, and Gumshoe, an American, not understanding what a ceiling fan (English) is, have very different implications, and Mitsurugi's and Edgeworth's reactions differ greatly based on that.

I can never engage with the English-speaking fandom at large bc of that and it saddens me, but at this point I care about Mitsurugi and Itonokogiri's characterization in the original Japanese versions of the games Too Much to compromise on it.

oh and even among jp fans I am camp mitsunoko instead of nokomitsu (it's less about the top and bottom thing and more about the vibes and dynamics bc on GOD Itonokogiri would NEVER be the one to make the first move are you KIDDING ME) and that pigeonholes me into an even MORE niche corner LMAO.

anyway I think that still turned out longer than I meant for it to be sgskhsjs but godddd they plague my every waking thought. ITONOKOGIRI CHECKS UP ON MITSURUGI AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE. MITSURUGI ONLY TOLD ITONOKOGIRI ABOUT HIS TRIP ABROAD AND NO ONE ELSE. THEY CAN'T COMMUNICATE FOR SHIT AND NEVER TALK ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THEY KNOW EACH OTHER SO WELL. WHY ARE THEY LIKE THIS.

I absolutely love that Tom is going to apparently do a horror movie and that movie with Alejandro that I'm still not sure how to classify lmao. Don't get me wrong, I love his action roles and they're absolutely phenomenonal but it'll be so nice to see him doing something different, especially considering it seems that he wants to tackle different genres again

yes! if anything the way he portrays ethan in mi proves that he'll be able to nail the other genres no problem and i'm very excited to see it and for everyone else to wake up and see what a fantastic actor he is!!!

Sexuality Headcanon: he is the single most aroace character i have ever seen in my entire life. and he is both touch-averse and sex-repulsed you can't change my mind.

Gender Headcanon: cis man

A ship I have with said character: mitsunoko my BELOVED. also very fond of qpr narumitsunoko with Naruhodou being the one coming into the relationship late.

A BROTP I have with said character: Mitsurugi's relationship with Mei is. so good. they're the most siblings ever. I also quite enjoy his relationship with Mikumo and with Mayoi!!

A NOTP I have with said character: non-qpr naru/mitsu......i'm sorry but. they would never.

A random headcanon: i'd say he's autistic but that's like. pseudo-canon anyway. so, i do think that he genuinely believes that Itonokogiri just really really likes soumen and doesn't quiet get the implications of the detective having soumen for every meal.

General Opinion over said character: i've been meaning to get into gyaketen saiban for like YEARS and i always was curious about MItsurugi's character, but damn i never expected to love him this much. he's had one of the best character developments/arcs in any franchise that i can think of and it makes me emotional how far he's come. i love him.

Itonokogiri Keisuke

Sexuality Headcanon: asexual but doesn't know it. messed around with sex when he was young, didn't understand what the big deal about it was, and never thought about it ever again.

Gender Headcanon: LISTEN i haven't given it much thought but.......i have the vague ideas of a trans man Itonokogiri in my brain..............

A ship I have with said character: same as above!!! and i also really really love the idea of narunoko at first starting to look out for each other for Mitsurugi's sake, but then growing closer and having genuine affection and concern for each other down the line.

A BROTP I have with said character: i adore his relationship with Mikumo, and honestly i think the mutual affection and respect between him and Mako is really sweet. i want them to be friends forever. 🥺

A NOTP I have with said character: i've seen people ship him with Mei and that was an instant Nope hahaha. i wish those shippers the best tho.

A random headcanon: he 100% has undiagnosed ADHD.

General Opinion over said character: hands down my favorite character in the franchise. the Itonokogiri i know and love from consuming the japanese version of the games is. so fundamentally different from the Gumshoe most of the english-speaking fans know from the localization. i respect and support their Gumshoe but he's like. an alternate universe version of Itonokogiri. i don't think i can forgive the localization for stripping so much of what made me fall in love with him. his acceptance that everyone never gets his name right (except for Mitsurugi). his -ssu speech quirk. his use of "jibun" as a first person pronoun. him canonically being good at shogi!!! HIS NAME BEING A DELIBERATE PARALLEL TO MITSURUGI'S MADE BY TAKUMI SHU. i love him so much and i mourn that a huge portion of the fandom will never get to know him.

I was watching a few Tom Cruise interviews and one thing he mentions that I truly appreciate is when he talks about watching movies in different countries/from other countries and watching his own movies in different cultures and seeing how they translate to said culture and I remembered, I think it was Glen, talking about how he should act in Top Gun and I think (I might be mistaken), to takr into account cultural cues. Not many actors will take that into account of even think about it.

yeah!!! one of my favorite quotes about this, is Doug Liman talking about the making of Edge of Tomorrow at the Tokyo Premiere, where he mentions how Tom has the Japanese audience in mind every step of the way. and i think it translated really well! he's always thinking about the audience, and not just American or English speaking ones <3

Do you ever wonder what goes on inside their heads? Me every single time I see Tom do some crazy shit that makes me heart pound and makes me want to find him and bubble wrap him to make sure be doesn't break something - again. I wonder how Chris does it tbh because if it's me I'd have had a heart attack by now

i think he's a professional who trains to do exactly this for a living and i trust him to know his limits and being competent enough through rehearsals and practice to do it with the minimal amount of danger to himself and others. will he still get injured? of course. mistakes happen. slip-ups happen. but. when you're operating at that level and know what you're doing, there's not much those around you can do other than just to trust you.

Did you also squeal with Tom at the closing ceremony? Because I have and I proudly own up to it. I don't know why I feel so strongly about someone I haven't met (unfortunately but my day shall come, I hope) that's old enough to be my grandfather but alas, I do and I'm just happy he seems so happy lately.
