#mario#they didn't touch on it all that much but AAAUAGHA (EXPLODES)#the long and the short of it. mario and luigi's family (mario included) think that luigi has a lot of potential. he's a bit of an egghead#basically#he can make machines and he gets good grades#but! luigi's too afraid to commit to a big leap out of his perceived station in life. and he wants to stick with his brother#he's afraid to tackle the world on his own and he doesn't really believe in himself#on the other side mario wants to protect luigi but also think that luigi can be better than him if he applies himself#mario's a determined guy but he willingly admits that he's not cut out for a smart guy job. that's fine. he can do anything#if he works at it long enough#basically mario let luigi tag along with him in plumbing even though he knew that luigi could do better#luigi just wanted stability#but their family sees it as mario dragging luigi down and even mario himself sometimes sees it that way#especially when their business isn't getting a lot of success#luigi just wants to stick with his brother#mario movie spoilers#technically#that's basically the long and short of the hidden conflict between the brothers that leads into the beginning of their adventures in#the mushroom kingdom#AND ALSO WHENEVER MARIO CALLS HIM LOU.
