re-reading flowers in the attic + petals on the wind as an adult (as opposed to a teenager) was really interesting. i saw cathy and her struggles in an entirely different light, especially in regards to the way chris treats her! when i was a teenager i felt more sympathetic towards chris and his unshakeable love for his sister but now, as an adult, i can see how truly obsessive and emotionally manipulative he really was!!! he begs and pleads with her, he makes her feel guilty for trying to move on—makes her feel guilty over the fact that he is in love with her and he cannot possibly move on or love anyone nearly as much, as if any of that is cathy’s fault at all—and when she tries to move forward, he sulks jealously and passive aggressively like a big baby! re-reading it with more knowledge and insight has totally changed my perception of him!

#if he truly genuinely loved her he would’ve wanted her to find happiness with another man &he would’ve let her go no matter how much it hurt #he’s just as selfish as she is; he’s just as selfish as their mother. he just *hides it better*#and yes i had a massive crush on chris #i still kinda do tbh despite his manipulative tendencies to get what he wants while seeming like an angel #but yeah idk this is only my second time reading this series so #jory is the sweetest thing he’s so precious #but bart makes me want to tear out my hair and gouge out my eyes #seriously he’s so annoying #also seeds of yesterday is even worse than i remember it #really had to grit my teeth to get through it oh my god #talk about boring and repetitive!!!!!! with awful writing and structure to boot #i think petals on the wind is my favourite out of the four (we don’t include garden of shadows as a part of the series here on inkykeiji)#because i really enjoy cathy’s identity struggle and her whole issue with this overwhelming and all consuming revenge #obv the first book is horrific for several reasons #but what i truly found horrific in the second book is the way men treated cathy #also thought it was interesting with her struggle between wanting so desperately to be loved but not wanting to have to rely on a man (or a #man’s attention) like her mother #anyway i’m just rambling here because this has been on my mind #clari chatters
