#you know i made that one post about economic development back when youse were asking me econ questions for my exams?#well i mentioned in that post that the two main ways of measuring development are either directly through income per capita#or through the HDI which measures 3 things - education life expectancy AND income per capita#so either way there's a hugeeeee weighting put on a country's wealth and it basically means if you're wealthy you're going to be considered#a developed country#because imagine your life expectancy is 30 and your education is piss poor but you're SUPER wealthy. you still get a high HDI ranking#so naturally there's a lot of economists arguing that development should be measured in other ways#what if you measured by mental health? how happy your population is? things like that?#and long story short i genuinely think if wealth wasn't such a huge factor in measuring development#then america wouldnt make the cut. or at least they'd be hanging on by their fucking nails#like you're gonna force people to have kids and then the kids are gonna get shot in school. that's not pro-life#and safe to say if the fuckers in charge knew their 'first world country' status was in the balance#i can guarantee they'd suddenly be MUCH more interested in the rights of their people#ask
