Today's theme is overthinking Shi Wudu the Water Tyrant and what his tyranny actually looks like
#random tgcf thoughts#shi wudu#i think about this a lot actually haha#we know from the novel that he is a tyrant and his main claim to tyranny is capsizing boats that dont give offerings#he does confess to raising waves and having a lot of enemies at one point#but a lot of his actual tyranny feels a bit like an informed attribute? this goes for everyone though#because we never really see anyone other than xie lian acting in their domain as a god#so (over)thinking about it... there are a lot of merchants and rivers and only one swd. how exactly does he have that much control xD#i'd like to think he'll make an occasional example out of someone#but otherwise he's not actually paying that much attention and if you do offer up enough he'll guarantee your ship's safety#and for the rest it's up to nature (and if there's a storm people can draw their own conclusions. he's certainly not discouraging them)#but swd is a top god too so he should have a lot of juniors under him#and there should also be local gods#i imagine his juniors make a lot of trouble for them steal away their followers and also act as collections agents and help find examples#(and by find examples i mean encourage hubris)#anyway i like to imagine swd to have created quite an mess of things that he is the only semblance of order of :)#im not sure what happens to his deputies after his death but i imagine he leaves behind quite the power vacuum#tgcf
