ℹ️ Safety Training Being safe is of utmost importance for all kids. So, does it come naturally? Can we teach how to be safe? Is it easy to teach? . Kids diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often lack safety awareness skills. Safety awareness skills include but are not limited to the following: safely crossing the street, avoiding situations that may cause harm to oneself or others, “stranger awareness,” fire safety skills, and knowledge of community signs. Safety awareness skills are important throughout all stages of life; from early childhood, to adolescence, to adult life and necessary across all environments (e.g., home, community, school, workplace). Teaching these skills are not only crucial to keeping individuals safe but also giving them the tools to lead a more independent life. Those diagnosed with autism can be taught safety awareness skills using Behavioral Skills Training (BST), video modeling, a combination of both and/or In-Situ training. . ℹ️ Promoting Independence = Self Help Skills Self-help skills are those functional skills or tasks that build independence, self esteem, and increase the likelihood that a child will be successful across multiple environments. For parents of a child with Autism, they are typically very used to helping their child be successful. Problems can arise when this loving and caring help goes on for too long, across too many environments, and hinders development. A few Self-Help Skills to look at: 🎖Dressing Skills (tying shoes, putting on shirt, matching tops to pants, etc) 🎖Bathing Skills (washes face, uses soap, dries with towel, etc) Grooming Skills (uses comb or brush, brushes teeth, can apply Chapstick, etc) 🎖Feeding Skills (uses utensils, sucks using a straw, chews with mouth closed, etc) 🎖Toileting Skills (wipes after BM’s, stays dry through the night, requests toilet if in a new public setting) 🎖Independence/Autonomy Skills (chores, making choices, polite refusal, e.g. "No Thanks") . ℹ️ Shaping Behavior: teaching a skill in increments, by reinforcing successful approximations of the Behavior. . Think of shaping as step-by-step, gradual learning. For example, in this post, you will see the kids are learning days of the month. Our final target is the kid should be able to tell the day after, before, and all days. Using shaping procedure, a sheet with different colours is used and gradually moved to plain white sheet and then reciting the days which is then followed by practicing more complex and final target of randomized questions. Most importantly EACH success is reinforced which encourages new successful learnings. . With the use of reinforcement and behavior shaping, it is possible to teach children—even nonverbal ones—all kinds of relatively complex behaviors, such as washing your hands before coming to the dinner table or appropriate bathroom behaviors or something like how to ask for help. .
