Alongside architect, artist, and designer @harrynuriev , @balenciaga displayed a transparent couch stuffed with old Balenciaga garments.
The bottom of the couch is made from mannequin bases, while the shell is clear vinyl. The shape is purposely frumpy, with the unabashed curves of the comfort-first, Lay-Z-Boy-style furniture. It’s stuffed with damaged—or what Belanciaga describes as “otherwise unsellable”—garments. The Balenciaga couch features garments that are a mix of several seasons past. Some even still have their old tags. In this sense, the couch is the equivalent of Balenciaga giggling at its old yearbook photos while still secretly thinking they looked pretty dang good with those glasses and bangs.

Things I Like • Cary Grant’s Suit • To Catch a Thief • 1955

I’m a great fan of the films of Alfred Hitchcock. We recently watched To Catch a Thief (1955); not quite a film amongst Hitchcock’s best, but jolly entertaining no less.

The film is one of three that Hitchcock made with the actress, Grace Kelly. She is identified as one of Hitchcock’s classic blond female leads, and is probably the most glamourous of all his leading ladies. True to form, she wears the most amazing clothes in Catch a Thief. This was the time of Dior and Belanciaga.

Cary Grant holds his own by wearing a lovely suit, tailored by Kilgour French and Stanbury. The suit is an early version of the type that re-appears in North by Northwest (1958), and that became the style guide for the Bond films and the man-about-town tailoring of various 1960s TV heroes (Steed especially).

By modern standards, the suit has a long drape, and combines British comfort with American styling. The cloth is a lightweight cloth that is entirely appropriate for the Mediterranean setting of the film.

The jacket has a three-button front with the lapel folded down to provide the longer style opening of a two-button jacket. You can see quite clearly, in the pictures above, that the jacket front is cut so that it should only be buttoned at the middle button. The tie and the waist-band of the trousers meet exactly where that middle button sits. Again, by modern standards, at a higher waist than we are used to now.

The jacket has a single vent that makes it look sporty, and the trousers have pleated fronts and turn-ups.
