Overall theme of the game for the gophers was sloppiness unfortunately. There were passes to no one and a seeing inability to keep the puck out of their zone or play any time at all in their offensive end. Very poor puck control and also some sloppy skating.

They started out the game with an incredibly sloppy goal in the first like 30 seconds and they never turned it around. As much as I’ve kind of grown used to the fact that the gophers start slow I still wish they didn’t because it makes all the difference in games like this and is just bad play.

I think the gophers ended up with more shots but very few were actually dangerous at all. Part of the was Maddie Rooney just being the amazing goalie we all know her to be but the gophers definitely didn’t make it too hard for her.

As part of the general sloppiness there were a lot of penalties called on UMN. There were a few a definitely think were bad calls, specially the trip called on Hengler and the hand pass on Oden, but otherwise it really was just sloppiness and some lack of control leading to penalties.

This was especially disappointing at the end of the game when the gophers had a power play from a roughing penalty with one minute left. Given how they were playing I wasn’t really expecting them to get two goals in that time but it was probably one of their best chances to so all night and it was squandered when Amy Potomak took her own roughing penalty. It was clear that the team was frustrated and playing worse because of that. They never really seemed to recover from the first bad goal.

Goalie was good. Scobee did look a bit like she didn’t know where the puck was on that first messy goal but that was really a whole team issue more than just her. The second goal was an absolutely wicked shot one on one that would have been very hard to stop and was probably due to poor defending more than anything. If the gophers could have generated any offense, Scobee’s performance would have been perfectly fine.

For next week when they’re in Bemiji, I want to see that they are playing full out the whole first period instead of letting the other team get ahead and having to play from behind. Everything they did poorly this game is stuff I know they can do really well but they have to be able to start well and stay calm so they can stay away from sloppy play. They won 5-0 last night against UMD and I wonder if they maybe were too confident coming into this game. Hope to see a turn around next week and I can’t wait to see them again when they come back home on the 21st and we play Mankato!
