Three hundred and fifty mile bicycle tour of Indian youth in Bangladesh
A young man from West Bengal, India, has cycled around various districts of Bangladesh to spread the mantra of ‘run safely, save lives’.
He came to Bangladesh last winter and crossed the 565 km or three hundred and fifty miles route by turning the wheel of the bicycle.
Divyendu Ghosh lives in Bangaon in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The 26-year-old has been interested in cycling since childhood. Divyendu told bdnews24.com the story of the trip in the winter of December last year, hoisting the Bangladesh-India flag on a bicycle under the slogan ‘Safe Drive, Save Life’.
Explaining the reason for riding this two-wheeler, he said, “As I get older, I have a thought in my head that bicycles do not cause pollution. And the way motorbikes are increasing, the way the pollution is increasing… Bengali is no longer Bengali.
“If motorbikes increase like this, people are going to face destruction; People are dying on the road every day. ”
Thinking to make the people of his locality aware, this young man from Bangaon got down on the road with his bicycle.
“I started cycling twenty to thirty kilometers around my city.”
Divyendu said, “I visited the Sundarbans one day (last November). We have as much Sundarbans in West Bengal. After leaving the Sundarbans, I saw that a lot of people in our Bangaon town started thinking about this bike. Although I posted about the bike on Facebook, I got good support. ”
Among them, ‘Safe Drive, Save Life’ campaign came to his notice in West Bengal. The project was launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in July 2016 to curb accidents such as ‘bicycle collision with a bike’, ‘death by crushing a bike’ and ‘death of a biker by crushing a lorry’.
“Standing there, it seemed that even if I could go to Bangladesh and deliver this ‘Safe Drive, Safe Life’ message, that too is my Bengali,” said Divyendu.
Divyendu’s great-grandfather’s house was in Faridpur district of Bangladesh; They migrated to Upper Bengal before 1947. Divyendu also cycled through that ancestral town.
Asked about the preparations for the bike tour in Bangladesh, he said, “I used to talk to some Bangladeshi friends. They encourage me. Say grandpa you come. We will cooperate to do your job. ”
Overwhelmed by the ‘support’ of everyone on the Facebook group of BDcyclist, the biggest cycling organization in Bangladesh, as told by Bangladeshi friends, the young Indian said, “They took me to Dhaka. I didn’t have to stay out for a day. I didn’t have to eat out. I have received a huge response in Bangladesh. I have met about two and a half hundred friends. ”
This was Divyendu’s first ‘foreign tour’ in Bangladesh with his bicycle, clothes in his bag and some books for publicity.
Asked if there were any complications in visa and customs, he said, “First I get a tourist visa. Speaking of immigration and customs, I learned that a separate paper is not required for a bicycle. Since bicycles are an eco-friendly ride. ”
The journey started on December 6, 2019, with the flags of the two countries being hoisted on the front and back of the eco-friendly vehicle.
Recalling the day, Divyendu said, “My friends, family members and others who love me all came to greet me with flowers.
“I arrived at the Petrapole-Benapole border. There I reached Benapole land port in just 10 minutes with the help of Mejbabu of Petrapol police station. When I saw the flags of the two countries on my bicycle, they helped me a lot. ”
After entering Bangladesh, the wheel of Divyendu’s bicycle turned in which direction. The young man said in reply to the question,
“From Bangaon to Benapole. From Benapole I first went to Chanchrata. I eat and drink at my friend’s house in the afternoon. We started cycling in Chanchra and reached in front of Magura police line at 9.40 pm. The next morning I started my journey from there again, my destination is Rajbari. After crossing Goalanda Ghat, I reached Rajbari. ”
After spending the night in Rajbari, cycling started again in the morning.
Divyendu was accompanied by an awareness book on safe roads for drivers, pedestrians and passengers published by the North 24 Parganas Transport Department, which he handed over to many during the visit.
“I have distributed a total of 240 books. I took three hundred books. Twenty books are not good under the pressure of a bicycle. And I brought back 40 books. I tried to deliver the book to everyone. “
“I wanted to hand over the books to those who have police lines, to the police personnel and police officers who are there, especially those who are on duty in the streets and those who are students,” said Divyendu.
He reached Banasree in the capital Dhaka on the evening of December 9, crossing ‘about 21 rivers’ by cycling.
Divyendu cycled on the busiest road in Dhaka from Shahbag, Dhaka University to Old Dhaka. He also met the police officers of Shahbagh police station.
Divyendu said, “I have met some students of Dhaka University.” I also handed over the book to the OC of the traditional Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka. ”
He also visited the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and informed about his visit. The young Indian received a congratulatory letter from the commission on December 16 and returned on January 19.
His return journey became enjoyable on the advice of friends in Bangladesh.
Remembering that journey by river, Divyendu said, “They told me that the launch journey from Dhaka Sadarghat to Barisal was a wonderful journey. It was a full moon night. I came to Barisal by launch. About seven or eight rivers, first the Buriganga, then the Dhaleshwari, then the Padma. I floated in the river all night – as if the river was calling. “
The young cyclist told bdnews24.com after cycling from Barisal that he finally returned to Benapole after a short detour. Then I went to Pirojpur, 49 kilometers. Then I went to Bagerhat district. Of these, many upazilas have also fallen. From there I left for Khulna. That day I cycled a total of 130 kilometers.

“There were cyclist friends in Khulna. They arranged for me to eat and drink. I can’t sleep all night… stories and music are all together. At 4 o’clock in the morning, after taking a bath, I left for my country. ”

Advise to take action by identifying the source of air pollution
Divyendu returned home on 13 December; Friends and relatives on the other side were also waiting for his return.
Divyendu said, “Benapole is again 75 kilometers from Khulna, via village road. I cycled this 75 km road back to the country. As I enter the border, I see my friends, family members, poets and writers standing, an unprecedented sight! ”
Asked about the experience of traveling to Bangladesh, he said, “It’s time for me to go 360 kilometers. And on the way back, I cycled 205 kilometers.
“I have received good respect in every district and upazila. When I wanted to talk, people stood up and talked happily. I did not say that the foreigner would withdraw me. I have never suffered from insecurity in Bangladesh. Everyone spoke to me with affection, like grandparents, like a son. ”
Divyendur thinks the use of private cars in Dhaka is ‘a little more’.
“I think the population is much larger,” he said. All road junctions may not have traffic signals, but the police are signaling by hand. I thought it was great, the people of Bangladesh are obeying the signal shown by that hand of the police.
“It simply came to our notice then. Bikers, however, rarely use helmets. Sadar outside Dhaka which is Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Benapole, Jessore these places have absolutely no pollution. The number of bikes is low. The people of the village are cycling. ”
Asked about the interest in bicycles in West Bengal, he said, “There is a Facebook page of an organization called ‘Kolkata Cycle Society’.”
“Bicycles are rented in different parks. Bicycles can be seen around the big parks. You can go to the office by booking a bicycle with the app for one taka. ”
Besides, in 2015, the West Bengal state government has been providing bicycles to students of class IX to XII under the Sabuj Sathi project.
Divyendu Ghosh thanked the cyclist friends of Epar for being able to do a bicycle tour in Bangladesh ‘well’ and said for the people of the two countries, “He was not saying that motorbikes should be avoided completely. It can be used if necessary. But people are using more than they need. ”

He said he would continue cycling to Tiger Hill in Darjeeling once the epidemic was over. The wheel protects the creation. Ride a bike, save the environment. ”
