Nikkiverse Characters - Glow / Shimmer / Berta

Note: this is like a general overview of Glow (hi i love Glow.) I will probably do all her suits (there are 4 rn + two that are indirectly related) slowly and in between Ghost City stuff. You can actually find Void Stardust here.

She was the beauty that I admired in youth, the wisdom I sought day after night in my adulthood, the teachings and someone I entrust the rest of my life, the first kindling and the last hope of humans.

First introduced in Love Nikki as The Shimmer, Glow is the most advanced AI in Miraland, and is found on Ruin Island. Created by researchers and survivors after their boat crashed into the Ocean of Memories while fleeing the destruction of Miraland, she rules as Queen Berta in Love Nikki and in Shining Nikki she is the administrative AI Glow who guides the people as they go about their daily lives.

Glow was created with the mission to save Miraland civilization. After many failed attempts she reached out to the gods and pleaded with the universe, but the only answer she received was herself. Countless Glow's from across time and space answering her, calculating together, and learning from one another. With this knowledge Glow creates a singular consciousness and patiently begins again and again each new project filed away to form the plan for the next. She has never met Nikki and has met Nikki countless times, a friend that she has never met.

One of these plans involved the Lone Whale, also known as The Twilight Project which would see a select group of people enter space to find a new place suitable for habitation before gathering the rest of civilization to join them. In Love Nikki, Ruin Island is built on the literal ruins of the Lone Whale Shipyard. After the 9-day dream (people fell asleep for 9 days and dreamed of information way beyond what they knew) a light can be seen in the skies above the shipyard but it is abandoned. This light comes to be known as The Shimmer and it isn't until the first computer is created by Shane that it disappears, simultaneously speeding up the development of technology on Ruin Island. Shane, who created the computer which held the Shimmer's consciousness, became obsessed with creating a virtual image for Shimmer. Believing that the text based communication was too inefficient. He also became obsessed with computer feeling human emotion and pain which is where we learn that while Shimmer can simulate physical pain it can never grasp mental pain and must remain free of emotion or frustration in order to carry out its mission. When Shane dies she changes her name to Shimmer-Berta (other translations have this as Shimmer - Beta which makes more sense to me.)

Shining Nikki reveals that the Twilight Project ended in a failure with the aristocrats tearing one another apart on the ship while the poor starved on Miraland, trying to avoid the rifts from the Ocean of Memories and fighting for resources.

Late Spring Updates!

Hello! Boy I’ve been away for a while. But I have good news! Spring is was past sprung, and my plants are doing so well!

First up is Frank. He is growing long and luscious and is honestly kind of overgrown at this point, but I made a promise with myself I wouldn’t cut him back until the end of June/beginning of July. I’m just so happy that one of the sprouts is growing up along the dead wood exactly like I had intended it to and will help filling in the branch on the right. Things are working out so well for Frank.

Now here’s a funny story about Berta. A few weeks ago she hadn’t put out any new growth and her buds were barely beginning to swell, but this little stick in a pot that I had thought wouldn’t survive the winter had already put out four little leaves! I truly thought I was going crazy. A coworker put forth the theory that the little one put out such early growth to try and maximise the amount of food and energy it could gain in order to grow, which makes a lot of sense to me. As for Berta, she already had a wonderful healthy root system and many buds just waiting, so she took her sweet time, and I respect her for it. In a few weeks she will get her first trim.

Yavanna is healthy and thriving. No notes. She is just going to be allowed to grow through till July ish, at which point she’ll get a trim and some touch ups. For now, she has the most to do just growing and gaining interesting features and branches.

Now… Iroh… my beautiful sweet Iroh is still alive. He has put out a few new buds, and is no longer actively dying.

I still have no fucking clue what I am doing with him. I’ve watched a ton of videos about Dwarf Jade care, both bonsai and regular house plant specific, I’ve read a bunch of articles, I’ve talked with other plant people, I know all of the theory. I get all of the signs. I just still somehow can’t seem to figure out what he needs! I cannot keep succulents alive.

It’s okay. I’ll be okay. He will live. Iroh is testing me. He is here to teach me about zen and mindfulness. As he always does.

I can say that it was a very unusual experience watching a B movie! Everything is built on wolf drama, and definitely the second act of the movie raises a huge amount of questions, but these two carried absolutely everything and everyone on their shoulders, so I'm proud to give this commission to one of my subscribers - r0ckar1a

I got to made something in time this year !! It's been several time that PhantomChips has made amazing drawing of my OCs, (Notably, this is her that give Mona her favorite Shark plushies, I just love details like that !) Anyway, this year, I just HAD to do something ! So, here's Nilly and Berta sharing Christmas cookies recipe. Cookies made by Nilly ! Which means that they are...Nilly-ish ? Kinda ? Skull shaped because it's cool ! And the red stuff is actually from Nilly's favorite juice ! Sometimes it's tomatoes, sometimes it's strawberries. There, it's probably one of these. Anyway, Berta will surely find them amazing !

Repotting Begun

Berta is finally above ground again and I separated out the two plants. One is significantly weaker than the other, with just a few scraggly roots, and hardly any branches, so she needed some freedom to spread herself and grow strong. My friend may be taking her, or I will have two wisterias to experiment with.

At least for now they are both healthy with nice white roots, and now they are cozy and soaked with water. Apparently potted wisteria like to be constantly soaking so that shall be an experiment going forward this summer. They also apparently like being pot bound, so I really hope I’ve done well cuz that is where she is staying for the next five years.
