1- I get the sense that One's initial dislike of being questioned would soften a little when dealing with Benton's sweet earnestness. Especially if Benton risks his own life to save Susan (because of course he would).

2- On the rare occasions where Two interacted with Benton, they seem to get along perfectly fine. I think that if Benton was around full time, he'd definitely develop a strong friendship with him. And, of course, Benton and Jamie would get along super well.

3- As we all know, Three was the closest to Benton out of the incarnations who met him, but I think Benton being a fully-fledged traveling companion would put an interesting spin on things. I think Benton would have a great time, although he would probably get tons of marriage proposals from the inhabitants of planets they'd travel to (I mean, he is super lovely, after all). And I'm sure Jo Grant would appreciate having her himbo bestie around.

4- Four liked Benton the most out of the UNIT soldiers he interacted with, so no surprises that he'd appreciate having Benton as a traveling companion a lot. I imagine Sarah-Jane would also appreciate a sweet himbo to bounce ideas off (especially since Benton is basically the opposite of Harry Sullivan in every way).

5- Five would get along so well with Benton, it's unreal. Benton is such a calming influence that Five would have him around just to chat over tea with. I also think the most personable of the classic Doctors would appreciate Benton's down-to-earth nature and sense of cheery humour. Also, Benton is the only UNIT man that Tegan and Nyssa would actually like, and we all know those two need at least one himbo third wheel with them at any given moment (Benton tries to sneak date money into Tegan's purse so she can take Nyssa to a cinema, Tegan gets flustered and turns bright red, Nyssa is confused but pleased nonetheless).

6- Benton would not only be able to restrain Six during his initial regeneration mood swings, but he'd also help Peri acclimatise to the situation. Mel would probably remind him a bit of Jo Grant, and he'd naturally fit into being her best friend.

7- Listen, I don't want to split up the duo of Seven and Ace, but -if I had to- Benton would slot in well. He'd be able to see through Seven's manipulations as well as acting like a sweet big brother to Ace. He'd probably get a little worried about all the pyrotechnics, though.

8- Eight would either have a slight crush on Benton, or try manipulating him into a scheme of dubious morality. Either way, Benton would have a hard time dealing with this eldritch figure. He'd probably get along well with Eight's rotating line-up of queer companions, though.

9- God-tier duo. Can you imagine human golden retriever Benton being around Nine? Nine; the incarnation with a boat-load of trauma and guilt who just wants to save people? Well, Benton's making him take a day off at the beach with some ice cream, plus some healthy discussion of emotions and wellbeing. He'd save that time lord's life just by being his friend, and it would be fantastic.

10- To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if Benton got exasperated with Ten at times, especially with how he treated Martha. Also, that whole "Time Lord Victorious" thing? Couldn't happen with Benton there. Doc, I dunno about the nature of time, but you're supposed to help people, not decide who's important and who isn't *upset puppy dog eyes intensify* *Ten immediately reverts back to normal*. Oh, but can you imagine Benton around Donna? That would be amazing.

11- I feel like Benton would probably calm down Eleven's energy a bit, and would also be a nice calming influence on all the TARDIS crew. He'd also probably be a little confused by River Song, just in general. Also, he'd tell tons of embarrassing stories from when he used to babysit Kate Steward.

12- Listen, we know that Twelve has a... difficult situation with U.N.I.T but I think he'd value Benton's presence despite that. I also think Bill especially would like Benton's sweet nature. And -hey- Benton would also be immune to Missy's shenanigans so conflicts would be resolved a good deal easier. Although Benton would definitely be a little alarmed by Clara, and try to help her and Twelve ease their co-dependency.

13- Given the amount of himbos in Thirteen's TARDIS teams, I think Benton would probably fit in quite well. He'd definitely bring an 'older cousin' vibe to a friendship with Yaz, and I imagine he'd also be there for Yaz when Thirteen is being a self-sabotaging jerk. He would also probably have a double-act with Dan. The lovely din-dins man meets the Dan with a plan and a pan. 🤣😂

Think Globally, Tour Locally: Some Speculation on Ninety One’s Goals and Strategies

@queenofattolia, who is not an Eaglez but is a patient listener, asked me about Ninety One’s promotional strategies: specifically, what are they trying to accomplish, and for which audiences? And I decided to answer her publicly so that other Eaglez could tell me where I might be making mistakes.

So let’s go back to about a year ago, after the release of “Darn.” Ninety One were still under Juz Entertainment; the big Almaty concert with Orda, which had originally been scheduled to happen in August, was coming up in December; and the plan, or at least the publicly announced plan, was to go to the US. This was going to happen with the help of a guy I will be referring to here as Slightly Sketchy Promoter Dude. I had my doubts about SSPD from the beginning, not because I thought he had malicious intent (there was never any evidence of that) but because nothing in his CV said anything about understanding or having any connections in the US music industry, and everything in his CV suggested he was the kind of guy who would absolutely claim to others, and himself, that he could figure out the US music industry by sheer force of will, charisma, and intelligence. (You can see why a group whose best song features the refrain If you can do it, you can do it! Do it! might be susceptible to this kind of sale.) SSPD had a cousin who’d worked as a dancer in New York, and she was briefly going to serve as Ninety One’s new choreographer, but at no point during this buildup was any actual American label name-checked. I was worried that Ninety One was going to come to the US on the strength of some valiant but empty cheerleading and find themselves without a leg to stand on.

That was December. By March Ninety One had announced the split from Juz. (Also I think SSPD’s choreographer cousin had returned to the US.) But even after the Juz split they were apparently still talking about going to the US; I remember as late as April hearing rumors that the big trip was going to happen in May. It wasn’t until this interview came out in mid-May, in which ZaQ gave a noncommittal answer to the US question, that we knew for certain that the US venture wasn’t for certain.

@bbcblackjack has said several times (remember, Sara can read Kazakh and I can’t) that Ninety One’s still talking as if the US trip is on. And certainly in the Zamandas interview there was talk about establishing a global reputation, to the point that they’d be able to make $10 million off one song. (That was Ace talking, and he has taken the lead in my force-ranking of Member Most Likely to Prosperity-Gospel-Visualizing-ly Spout Big Ideas in the Hopes that If You Say Them Often Enough They Won’t Turn Out to Be Bullshit, y’all know what I’m talking about; Alem is second, ZaQ third, Bala a distant fourth.) But their actions since going independent haven’t pointed towards a US focus at all. Their priorities since departing Juz seem to have been 1) establishing themselves as an independent entity, 2) touring and getting to see Kazakhstani Eaglez for the first time since 2019, 3) recording an album, 4) maaaaaybe re-establishing themselves in an entertainment industry possibly shaken up by the possible fall from grace of Bolat Nazarbayev. Attach a lot of caveats to that last one. I’m really not sure of it. (I’m not even sure that Bolat has actually fallen; there’s still a ton of murk surrounding the current status of the various Nazarbayevs.)

Actually, let me expand on that last point a little bit: keep in mind that the group in general, and ZaQ and Yerbolat Bedelkhan in particular, have always said that they wanted to grow the Q-pop industry as a whole, and also that they believe the Kazakhstani state has an opportunity and a responsibility to encourage this whole. If--if--Bloody January resulted in some kind of shakeup, and if Bolat Nazarbayev really was getting kickbacks from basically every entertainment venue in Almaty and generally messing up the entire ecosystem under which musicians might get paid, and if the shakeup meant a dissolution of that kickback system without anything immediately obvious to replace it, then an optimistic Q-pop performer or four might well decide it was worth their while to stay put, tour locally, act nice to the current power structure (remember Kana Beisekeyev saying in the Zamandas interview that Ninety One was telling other artists to support Toqaev, the current president), and hope by doing so to build credit towards a healthier and better-appreciated-by-the-state music industry, even if it meant putting the group’s own American plans on hold.

I could be way off; it could be as simple as the group deciding that SSPD was Boss Yerbolat’s man and biding their time until they could get a US contact they trusted more, and check off some items on the to-do list in the meantime (in ZaQ’s case, getting married, and in Ace’s, going twelve rounds with Almaty’s commercial real-estate market). But meanwhile they haven’t even bothered to get an English translator yet for the songs since “Darn” and the new Space and tour videos. For all the possible US talk, all their efforts as an independent group so far have been strictly focused on the home market.

But... maybe that’s changing? Like I said, “Gap” as a lead single may point towards a desire to pivot back to a focus on markets outside Kazakhstan. And they may have found at least one useful US contact: the New York-based ATB Promotions, who’s handling Irina Kairatovna’s tour later this month. I am willing to bet actual money that if Ninety One performs in the US in the next year, barring some disaster befalling IK, it’ll be under ATB Promotions’ wing. (Which means I should start saving to get to Chicago, LA, New York, or Miami now. Discover Atlanta, ATB Promotions! Half the flights you’d want to book the guys on would connect in Atlanta anyway.) And we know the guys are studying English (the most charming part of those playlist Instagram Reels was Bala speaking English). If they are starting to feel secure enough in their home market to look abroad, I hope they get something more substantial than what SSPD had to offer. And also, because I am greedy and human, I hope they start paying someone who can go between Kazakh/Russian and English, and also start looking around and seeing what activity they can find in their foreign fanbases.

Elyse barely slept, and I woke up every hour to restart the fan…I woke at 4:30 with a new idea and waited until 5:00 alarm…sat on side of bed and told Elyse, “I have an idea”. What if we leave our bags at the hotel, hike our coastal hike with our small packs, just bring water, sunscreen, and food ( no water or towns until the end of hike) then we could get a taxi back to our hotel, get bags, and taxi back to our new Hostal..excitedly we prepared for the day…22 kilometer hike and lots of climbing…how expensive can the taxi be? It was only $15 dollars yesterday…while we were deciding, Elyse opened her Polarsteps blog and found a message from Andy, my brother…that said something like open your wallets, enjoy where you are, live life! So, we left the bags and lightened our load and headed out happy and healthy…tons of water, a big sandwich to split between breakfast and lunch, cherries, a peach, and survival food…still heavy, but not as…for what we figured would be a 5-6 hour hike…signs say 3-4 hours.

Up and out at 5:45.. to the marina and then up up up up we were following the green and white striped signs today rather than the red and white because the coastal walk, the local walk was supposed to be gorgeous…it was spectacular. BUT …we soon learned, but not soon enough that many trails are green and white…we hiked to cove…down down down…took a million photos, then hiked up up up…but maybe too up..unclear where we went wrong, but we were at the top of a cliff, then the top of a trail, the bottom of a canyon, back up, out, up, around and back and up and back and a runner flies by…but we were so disoriented on the green and white, that we gathered ourselves, grit, perseverance, resilience, everything we expect from our students we put into use today…all day…3 hours later we were back to where we should have been after 30 minutes. Back on track, time to hike to another cove… but behind on the steep descent..yelling, music, etc…probably 50 high schoolers headed to the same tiny beach cove. Ugh..on we go, legs tired. Get to cove, but just kept going up and over that cliff cove to the next which was “28 minutes” away…it is now around 11:00…an hour later we opt to bypass the next cove I order to beat the sun…but our new path was only sun…stop in shade to eat the other half of our sandwich and sip water, as we are still conserving as we have PTSD from the other day…only 2:45 hours left til we are done for the day…I will stop describing the hike here…it got a bit sketchy…when we decided we could not go any further and called a taxi, we were still “1:50 “ from our final point on the trail..it was 4:00. 10 hours of hiking.

The rest of this story…which takes place in the blazing sun, cliff sides,and steep ascents and descents, Elyse and I agree, is best to tell in person.. we keep looking at each other amazed at what our bodies are capable of doing.

Called taxi from yesterday…to drive back to hotel and get bags, and back to new hostel was $88! Ugh! But it would have been physically impossible to do this hike with our packs. No possible way…taxi driver talked non stop entir time while Elyse and I switched off nodding and agreeing with him while the other closed eyes..Mr. Chirp Chirp.

Hostal clean and owners charming. Showered (had to use my sock as a washcloth to clean the dirt and sunscreen off my ankles) laundry, booked Hostel for me for the rest of the way..but this trail is soooo difficult, I don’t think it safe for solo travel. I may get to the towns and day hike…I don’t need to prove anything or be a hero…although…

Dinner at the local bar..tapas. We let our waiter order typical tapas from the region…because, as always, no meals served after 3:00. This town has an anchovies museum and is famous for them. So we have delicious anchovies in vinegar on bread, grilled calamari,prawns, cannelloni, and potatoes with garlic mayonnaise…waiters choice. Plus I am drinking local red wine delicious…dragonfly in Spanish

Day was sooooo long unplanned. Tomorrow we will hike a portion of the 20 MILE route and taxi to Roses, Spain…spend the afternoon exploring town and Citidal. What to do about bags, we cannot decide….but we do know the route is the only flat day!

If you followed me on the Camino de Santiago…I loved every second, villages, people, food, wine, lifelong friends…this is different…the most beautiful hikes I have ever taken…amazing. But so technically difficult we don’t have the time or strength for more at the end of the day…and no other thru hikers..we think people know to transfer bags and day hike each section..we are in our final few days together and opting for possible plan Bs.. proud of what our bodies cans do, but not the Vibe of the Camino…having an adventure for sure!
