24hrs in the mental health ward was the best thing I’ve done for myself and I’m so happy and proud that I did it.
I learned a lot even in just a short period of time. I learned it doesn’t matter for how long you stay, but that when you’re ready to leave, you will not leave totally cured. I also learned medications are to help and are not a cure, but what you do to help yourself get better is the cure. I left knowing why and what I was going through, and I left with a plan and direction of where to go and what to do to heal. I have such a long road ahead of me, and I know it’s going to be difficult, but that 24hrs, has already opened up my eyes to a lot of things, and of course I have a lot to learn yet, but I see everything so different now, and I understand things a little better.
My next steps, are to try this antidepressant which is a different class than the last ones I have been on that didn’t do anything for me. I am doing cognitive behavioural therapy but it is a 7 month wait for a counsellor that specializes in it because Canada, so until then, I will be seeing a regular counsellor to help me get through and work some things out. Therapy is not an option right now as it is not covered in our healthcare without employer insurance, which I don’t have. But it will be an option left open if the counsellor can’t fully help me. I will also be seeing a grief counsellor, as that seems to be a main trigger, and something that I clearly struggle to process. I do have full access to the psychiatrist who evaluated me in the ward for follow ups and any medication changes that may be needed, as unfortunately my family doctor is no where near qualified or educated to be treating my mental health.
I’m nervous, and terrified but also excited and feeling enthusiastic about getting better, and I’m sure that feeling won’t last long as things get tougher, but I know I have to push through it, and jump these hoops if I have any more chances at finding my will to live again.

Hello! I hope this question isn't too difficult, or one that's been answered before, but do you have any advice on what to look for when researching a therapist before a first appointment? I've been questioning whether or not I have OSDD for a while now and I'm finally able to look for someone to get a diagnosis, but I have no idea what kinds of things are important to know before the first meeting (like what kinds of therapy would be best to look for and things like that)

This REALLY depends on what you're looking for.
So, if you're looking for a diagnosis, the very first thing to do is find out what kind of practitioners and clinicians can diagnose mental disorders where you live. So, for example, in Canada, only GPs, psychiatrists, and psychologists with (specifically) an MD or higher can diagnose you (and you really don't want your GP to diagnose you, they don't have any specialized training in mental health, so you're specifically looking for the other two).
Below those, we have therapists, counsellors, social workers and social service workers, coaches-- all of these can treat, but can't diagnose, but they're the easiest to find and most numerous. Many psychiatrists here in Canada will diagnose, but not treat-- few will have a practice where they provide both counselling and diagnosis. If you can find one with a practice specializing in what you think you have, you're golden, but it's rare. Literally, it's a needle in a haystack. They usually work for hospitals and you only see them for one or two sessions to get a diagnosis. Treatment is usually left to psychologists and all the other labels below them.
Find out how things work where you're living, and go from there.
Once you've figured that out, come up with a game plan. For us, it was a combination of a psychologist, and a referral to a psychiatrist for diagnosis. Once we had the diagnosis, treatment with the psychologist became more specific, but the psychologist we'd chosen didn't specialize in dissociative disorders, so it was a learning experience for both of us. We were in therapy for several months before we moved, and it was another few years before we started looking again for a new therapist (of any title).
This time, we knew what we were looking for, though finding it was harder than we'd thought.
First, you want to look for someone specializing in dissociation and dissociative disorders. The chances of you finding "DID specialist" in a therapist's bio is slim. I'm sure they're out there, but... I mean, that technically wouldn't be the correct title?? I'm just saying, you're not likely to find anything by googling that specifically (though definitely try, why not, can't hurt).
For us, we weren't able to find a dissociative specialist near us, unfortunately, so the next thing to look for is a therapist that specializes in (C)PTSD and trauma, and/or abuse. This we found pretty easily. She also had experience with some of our other problems, so that's a fantastic bonus. Look through their bios carefully, find one that will give you the most support for the most amount of issues.
My OCD and anxiety cause me an extreme amount of distress-- like more than anything else, so the fact that she also had experience in treating that was... Amazing. Two for one? Sweet. There were also concerns about BPD, which she also had experience with. 3 for 1. The list goes on.

Next, find one that fits your lifestyle. Anyone treating me would need to be LGBT positive and would need to accept that I have multiple partners. That was important, and she specifically stated she accepted clients of that orientation.

Next, find out their educational background and how long they've been working. It would usually be right there in your bio, but once you've found all the other points, you've likely narrowed it down to a couple of potential therapists. Don't be afraid to email them and ask questions.
For us, because she didn't specialize in dissociation, we emailed, explaining our situation (gay, poly, recently traumatized, dissociative-- I didn't say DID/OSDD yet), and asking what her experience with dissociative disorders was. She responded with her educational and work background, and how many dissociative patients she had worked with (3 DID cases, specifically, and several dissociative clients), and reassured me that there would be zero judgment over my lifestyle (I really needed that reassurance).
With that, it was set. We made the first appointment.
The first appointment should not be an actual session. The first appointment is for you both to meet and see if it's a good fit. It's as important to the therapist as it is for you to make sure you're both compatible. If a therapist can't help you, they don't want you. They can do a lot of damage trying to treat something they don't have experience with, and most are cognizant of that. It's in both of your interests to make sure you'll both be successful. We discussed our histories, we talked frankly and honestly, and we clicked. If you get any funny feelings or aren't comfortable, drop them. Ask questions-- test them. Ask what they think the best treatment for DID is (fusion or healthy multiplicity), do they support healthy multiplicity, if that's what you're looking for. Make sure their answers fall in line with what you want and believe.
