Today is Endangered Species Day, I painted this Sumatran Tiger after visiting the zoo in Auckland, NZ. Threats to this tiger species include habitat loss, human-animal conflict and poaching. Take some time to donate or spread awareness about the animals that make our world amazing. // #endangeredspecies #endangeredspeciesday #sumatrantiger #tiger #wildlife #conservation #wildlifeconservation #wildlifeartist #wildlifeart #bigcatconservation #oilpainting #savetigers #savetheanimals #kendraaldricharts https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxkz_6sFdcl/?igshid=1u8jp8bal6vct

Photo by @beverlyjoubert | Lions are among the planet’s best studied mammalian species, yet there is still so much about them that we don’t understand—and they continue to surprise us as we learn more. When it comes to pride structures, mating, habitat and prey preferences, hunting strategies and other behaviors, populations across Africa have shown themselves to be far more varied than we thought. This means any successful conservation initiatives need to take that diversity into account … what works to safeguard lions in one geographic location may not be suitable in another. A camera trap captures both a Snow Leopard and a Common Leopard in the same location. . . . This is a #Repost from @pantheracats ・・・ Why is this video a big deal? It shows the first known images of snow leopards and common leopards sharing habitat in China--a discovery that could change our snow leopard conservation strategies throughout the species' range. We believe that with enough prey, the two big cats can continue cohabitating while we address the many external threats they face. But we have to understand the role of climate change. Without our work in the field and collaboration with partners, we might still be ignorant of these species’ interwoven turfs as Earth Day approaches. See how we prioritize field work to enable discoveries like this at the link in our bio. #earthday #earthday2018 #bigcats #wildlifeconservation #bigcatconservation #predatorsunderthreat #cameratraps #camertrapping #vulnerablespecies #wildcats #roomfortwo #snowleopards #snowleopard #leopards #leopard #istandwithbigcats #actforcats

Hey there, good looking!! . To take this pic I had to sprawl out on the front of a small boat while holding my pee, getting destroyed by mosquitoes, and getting barked at by caiman (they do making a barking noise). . Also, we were attacked by killer bees. Like, actual killer bees. . Man, I’d much rather be doing that right now instead of actually working. . . . #jaguar #jaguarsofinstagram #bigcats #savebigcats #bigcatsofinstagram #bigcatconservation #apexpredators #onca #pantanal #brazil #adventure #nature #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #wildlife #animalphotography #daydreaming (at Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4SLIeVhS3A/?igshid=11qfnf74gsncz

#Repost from @action4ifaw with @regram.app ... Tourism can be a powerful force for good. It drives spending into local economies, provides job opportunities, and increases appreciation of other cultures.⠀ ⠀ However, tourism can come at a cost to wildlifeespecially for big cats. Both within and outside of the U.S., big cat breeders, deals, and exhibitors often refer to their facilities as “rescue sanctuaries.” Yet they buy and breed big cats, allow members of the public to have direct contact with these animals, operate with a focus on profit rather than animal welfare, and contribute nothing to wildlife conservation—key indicators of the alarmingly common “pseudo-sanctuary.”⠀ ⠀ The good news is you can visit big cats at one of the many true sanctuaries around the world. When you're researching a sanctuary, find one like @safehavenwildlifesanctuary (pictured) that:⠀ ✓ Does not allow contact with big cats.⠀ ✓ Does not engage in breeding, trading, or selling of animals.⠀ ✓ Will have accreditation and nonprofit status.⠀ ✓ Only cares for animals rescued from abuse, neglect, or who have been impounded and are in need of lifelong care.⠀ ⠀ Photo: © IFAW-Getty Images⠀ ⠀ #WorldTourismDay #bigcatconservation #bigcatsanctuary #savetheearth #animalwelfare https://www.instagram.com/p/B28j7_1hVO4/?igshid=1t2pxnadgxcaz

In my last post I asked what you though was going on with this pair of male cheetahs patrolling the Serengeti. ~ Answers ranged from looking for a mate to marking territory; to looking for his tail and wanting to race me... 😂 funny b*stards! ~ If you look closely, on the log in front of his face you’ll notice a darker patch - this is where both males stopped to sniff for a good 2-3 minutes before spraying over the area one at a time... to the point of runoff 😂 so the answer is = scent marking, to define territory and see who else is in the area. ~ We were lucky to watch these two males for +2 hours as they patrolled, stopping occasionally to sniff, snarl (Flehman grimace), spray, rub, scratch, scan, and rest after all the work... then continue on to the next tree. It was amazing to watch, and I’ve probably only seen it twice in my life. ~ While I’ve said the main reason they were moving through their territory like this was scent marking, they’re doing multiple things on the move... 1) Scanning scents isn’t limited to cheetah smells, so they’re also scanning for lions and leopards etc to get an idea of who’s in the neighbourhood - both lions and leopard will kill cheetah, so if there’s fresh sign from either they’ll consider moving elsewhere to stay safe. 2) They’re scanning for rival / intruding males (competition for food, females, and territory) AND females, the response to each is obviously very different... They’ll defend against other males, and mate females if they’re ready. 3) They’re also essentially always on the hunt... all cats are opportunists, so they’ll regularly scan on patrol to see what opportunities are out there. They don’t generally scavenge but they are Crepuscular, meaning they move most at sunrise/sunset - though hint during the day to avoid conflict with nocturnal lion and leopard. ~ There’s a story about day hunting and the black streak under their eyes for another post too. . . . . #bigcats #bigcat #bigcatsanctuary #bigcatsforever #bigcatsofinstagram #bigcatswildlife #bigcatconservation #bigcatphotosafari #savebigcats #bigcatsofafrica #bigcatphotography #cheetah #cheetahprint #cheetahs #cheetahconservationfund (at Serengeti National Park, Ndabaka Gate) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1M_1h7FDMr/?igshid=1e5mmzdyc7xt9
