NEW EVIDENCE THAT COSMIC RAYS SPARK LIGHTNING: Every second, almost 50 bolts of lightning zig-zag across the skies of Earth. Despite centuries of study, however, researchers still aren't sure how the bolts get started. Electric fields in thunderclouds are often too weak to ignite a powerful discharge.

A new study just published in the Journal of Geophysical Research may have solved the mystery.

"We believe that most lightning flashes in thunderstorms are ignited by cosmic ray showers," says the study's lead author Xuan-Min Shao, a senior scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. To investigate the earliest moments of lightning formation, Shao and colleagues built a radio interferometer named "BIMAP-3D." Consisting of an array of 8 antennas in Los Alamos, BIMAP-3D can make three dimensional images of lightning and pinpoint the bolts inside thunderclouds. Here's an example:

This is a lightning bolt from a massive thunderstorm that passed by Los Alamos on July 30, 2022. BIMAP-3D imaged more than 300 bolts during the 90-minute storm. It was a treasure trove of data.

The experimenters realized that some of the bolts they observed happened in parts of the storm where electric fields were too weak to cause the "Initial Breakdown Event" (IBE)--the initial spark that sets the lightning in motion. Modern theories of relativistic electron avalanche couldn't explain what they saw. Their suspicions soon focused on cosmic rays. Cosmic rays are high energy particles that come from distant supernova explosions and other violent events across the cosmos. They strike Earth's atmosphere all the time, creating a secondary spray of particles called "cosmic ray showers." Regular readers are familiar with these showers because we routinely monitor them using Earth to Sky cosmic ray balloons over California.

One of the important things about cosmic ray showers is that they contain antimatter--positrons as well as ordinary electrons. The Los Alamos 3D lightning maps contained strong evidence for positrons. Electrons and positrons are bent in opposite directions by Earth's magnetic field, so they leave opposite imprints on the lightning's polarization, which BIMAP-3D also measured.

"It took me a while to figure this out," admits Shao. "I started with electrons only at the beginning, but could not explain the observations. With both electrons and positrons involved, all the observations can be consistently explained."

Positrons clinched the case for cosmic rays. "The fact that a cosmic ray shower provides an ionized path in the cloud that otherwise lacks free electrons strongly favor the inference that most lightning flashes are ignited by cosmic rays," the authors wrote.

In fact, it's still unclear how much of Earth's lightning is sparked by cosmic rays. Many more storms need to be studied with this method to improve the statistics. "This will require a lot of long-term and good quality lightning data," Shao says.

In general, lightning starts after opposing electrical charges — positive and negative — are separated in clouds, resulting in a discharge that people see as lightning. In their study, which took advantage of an innovative, Los Alamos-developed mapping and polarization system called BIMAP-3D, the team observed the signal polarization — how the discharge current is oriented — from these discharges had a slanted pattern away from the propagating direction, meaning they were not only following the thunderstorm’s electric field. This indicates that something other than the electrical field played a role in initiating lightning. In addition to being slanted, the team noticed that the direction of polarization changed between the positive and negative discharges. The research team attributed this behavior to cosmic-ray showers, which are high-energy particles from space that enter the Earth’s atmosphere. These cosmic rays produce secondary, high-energy electrons and positrons in atmosphere that further ionized the air and created pathways in thunderclouds, allowing lightning to follow and travel faster. The research team discovered that the high-energy electrons and positrons were being pushed in different directions by the Earth’s magnetic field and the cloud electric field, leading to slanted discharge current, that is, the slanted polarization from the pathways of cosmic-ray showers. The positrons and electrons were deflected in different directions in the electromagnetic field, explaining why they behaved differently between the fast positive and negative discharges.

Dotnet Collections

I've been working on some Things. More posts as they release. But anyway, I've been particularly indulging in infrastructure.

My hero (for purposes of this post) is perhaps Josh Bloch (though I'm sure I'll bring shame to his name). I really love the java collections API. I'm really sad to be operating in dotnet land without it. So, uh, I wrote it.

Here are some complaints: Dotnet dictionaries don't serialize in Unity. Dotnet dictionaries and sets don't support ordered traversal, so it's harder to write tests. Dotnet doesn't natively support more complex types (particularly bimaps and multimaps).

So! I wrote them. Let me know if they help you!

The core types (Set & Map) are es6-style sets and maps; insertion order enumeration. They're implemented on a linked list, so I haven't tried to make them efficient per se (lots of little allocations). The unity code looks like it doesn't have tests but don't be fooled; that's just me writing all of the code I can in dotnet land to avoid dipping into the unity test framework.

Which is not to say they're well tested; caveat emptor.

El 'Informe de gestión, competencias y organización sobre la educación bilingüe en Andalucía', ha concluido que el programa bilingüe potencia el aprendizaje de la lengua extranjera (inglés) y beneficia el aprendizaje de la lengua española en la producción escrita.

La colaboración con la Agaeve permitió al equipo trabajar con un marco muestral muy amplio y representativo, superior a los 4000 sujetos. Entre otras conclusiones, el estudio apunta que "los alumnos de centros bilingües obtienen mejores resultados en destrezas escritas en su primera lengua, el español, lo que confirma, mediante el principio de interdependencia lingüística, que en situaciones bilingües las lenguas se consolidan mutuamente mediante la activación de procesos de adquisición comunes".

El trabajo se enmarca en el proyecto I+D*de Excelencia del Ministerio BIMAP Mapa del Lenguaje Académico Bilingüe coordinado en la UPO y en el que participan las universidades de Málaga, Granada, Viena, Jyväskylä y Universidad Libre de Berlín La metodología bilingüe incluye más actividades de lectoescritura. Es un factor que puede estar incidiendo en el refuerzo de la lengua castellana. En definitiva, la enseñanza bilingüe potencia el análisis y la comprensión profunda de los textos.

Elon Musk Responds to Critics Over Non-Invasive Ventilators

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, defended his company's donations for “non-invasive” ventilators that may not be able to treat severe cases of coronavirus, and accused his critics of being fake accounts and trolls.

As the coronavirus outbreak worsened in March, Musk offered to donate ventilators to hospitals to address the shortage of medical equipment needed. The UCLA Health and NYC Health and Hospitals networks thanked Tesla for the donations on Twitter.

However, one of the tweets raised the question of how useful the donated devices really were. The photo appeared to show BiMAP devices (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) manufactured by ResMed, the design of which resembles the usual non-invasive CPAP devices (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure).

While BiPAP and CPAP devices can help patients with diseases like sleep apnea breathe, they cannot deliver oxygen directly to the lungs. This is the method that many patients with critical breathing problems need, the Financial Times reported.

Critics on Twitter piled up against Musk, who quickly defended himself after a supporter found that New York governor Andrew Cuomo confirmed that the BiPAP devices could be converted to the ventilators needed to treat COVID-19 patients.

Invasive ventilators are suitable for worst-case patients. The survival rate at this point is low, as Gov Cuomo emphasized. Still, we're starting to ship Medtronic intratracheal devices in NYC tonight.

Musk also tweeted that "it is strange that so many troll / bot accounts have been activated to attack this fake problem".

Michael Farrell, CEO of ResMed, recently interviewed CNBC, praising Musk's efforts to buy the company's BiPAP machines from a platform five years ago and then send the devices from Asia to New York.

A late March NPR report found that CPAP devices could increase COVID-19 infections by aerosolizing the coronavirus. The face masks used with the machines let air escape – which may explain the spread of the disease in a nursing home in Washington State.

The more advanced BiPAP devices can still be used safely as long as patients are treated with breathing tubes rather than face masks.

Vậy ảnh Vector là gì?

- Định dạng ảnh: Định dạng file khác nhau giữa hai loại ảnh:

Đối với file vector: được vẽ bằng phần mềm thiết kế đồ hạo như Corel hoặc Al. Những định dạng file thường gặp: *.cdr (corel), *.psd (photoshop), *.ai (illustrator), *.esp, *pdf. Chúng thường đi kèm với phần mềm thiết kế.

Đối với ảnh bitmap: là file ảnh được tâp hợp bởi nhiều điểm ảnh khác nhau, nếu các pixel càng nhiều thì hình ảnh càng sắc nét. Những định dạng file thường gặp: *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.tip, *. gif, …

- Phần cấu trúc

Còn đối với ảnh vector chúng được cấu thành từ các đối tượng scanling độc lập nên chúng không phụ thuộc vào độ phân giải. Chúng ta có thể tăng hoặc giảm kích thước mà vẫn đảm bảo được độ sắc nét của ảnh, không bị giảm chất lượng hình ảnh. Khác với ảnh bitmap ảnh vector không bị giới hạn, chúng được đặt chồng lên các đối tượng khác nhau mà vẫn được nhìn thấy.

- Về dung lượng

Hình ảnh Vector có dung lượng thấp hơn ảnh bitmap khá nhiều so với cùng mọt kích thước. Việc này đôi khi làm giảm nhẹ các Website khi có quá nhiều ảnh bitmap.

- In ấn

Như đã biết các ấn phẩm như Poster, card visit, bao bì, túi giấy, các ấn phẩm kích thước nhỏ thường được dùng ảnh bimap.

Còn đối với các hình ảnh có kích thước lớn như standy, banner ngoài trời, backdrop hoặc các ấn phẩm cần độ nét cao thì ảnh vector luôn là lựa chọn tốt.
