When sightseeing in the Liguria region of Italy one drives either straight up or straight down a mountain side... over and over and over again. And if you’re driving to Moneglia, then you’re sure to be passed by more than a few speeding motorcycles on the winding roads leading to Birra del Bracco, Dario and Daniele’s small farm brewery (Azienda Agricola Bröa). A couple days ago, they were kind enough to show me their brewing installation that has been in use since 2011 when they opened their taps to the public (mostly local). One may also enjoy their beers while gazing down the valley to an amazing view to the coastal town they call home (it’s best to find out in advance when they’re open). I’m definitely a fan of their unfiltered and unpasteurized pils, brewed with their farm’s barley (as with all their beers) for nice malt character and hopped with a decent dose of Saaz hops 3x’s (bittering, aroma/late, dry) for earthy character and a true beer lover’s lingering hop oily bitterness. Then, I went for their Pale Ale, one brewed with Cascade hops (my guess is European grown) and a step up in lupulin oily bitterness. A solid US x European Pale Ale with definite hops riding on full malts - no complaints here from me! Still to taste: they’ve got a Bock that’s always available, but I’m personally looking forward to trying their seasonal Imperial Stout (for another day).
