It is with great pleasure once again Soft Box Gallery has partnered with the University of the West Indies in hosting artist Leona Fabien's exhibition, you are invited to attend the opening of ‘’Woodbrook a Living Hell"
at Soft Box Gallery, # 9 Alcazar Street, St. Clair, P.O.S. on Friday 29th April 2020 from 5:30am to 8pm.

"WoodBrook A Living Hell" by artist Leona Fabien
The impact of commercialisation on the residents of Woodbrook, Port of Spain is being examined in this research. The outcome of the cultural and social changes on the residents, the altering of the built environment and ultimately the demolition of the older residences in the once predominantly residential neighbourhood are crucial to this study
"As a Woodbrook resident for thirty-three years, I have daily seen and continue to experience the changes in the physical and cultural landscape and human interactions within this place that is home."
LEONA FABIEN
Fabien studied Visual Arts at The Centre for the Creative and Festival Arts, UWI, St Augustine. Whilst there, she was the recipient of several Bursary Awards from UWI Endowment including the M.P. Alladin Prize for Best Visual Arts Degree Student for her final year. She participated in the recently held Hilarian exhibition titled “Celebrating 100 Years –A Call to Arts, Honouring Our Past, Inspiring Our Future, A Proud Tradition of Art Part 2” which was held at the Castle Killarney in Port of Spain. She has been exhibiting with the Women in Art of Trinidad and Tobago since 2001 and has received prizes throughout the years for participating in their shows. In their latest 2021 exhibition “Radiance” held at the Rotunda Gallery located in the Red House, she received an Award of Merit for Most Outstanding Textile Art. She has also been exhibiting with Canvas Caribbean since 2003 and the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago. Finally, Fabien has had work exhibited at The National Museum and Art Gallery and CARIFESTA X, Georgetown, Guyana. She is currently teaching Art and Design and Visual Arts at Bishop Anstey High School, POS.

A Game of Thrones...
Tumblr media
My good-good friend Franka posted the image above on Facebook today, challenging fellow social media denizens to come up with suggestions.  Thanks to Janine C-F, Stefan S and Rhonda M for their help tuning these responses, and the bonus profiles included.
Jon Snow went to St. Anthony's College. He came from an influential enough family, but really didn’t know enough to get into one of the top schools.  After O’Levels, he opted to go on a Northern European tour to try to find himself rather than continue his education.  Even after that time of introspection and rebirth, he still, admittedly, ent know much.
Cersei Lannister is pure St. Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain. She probably got in on the 20% allocation though due to her father’s influence, and is suffering from an inferiority complex because her parents didn't send her to Maple Leaf where the guy she dreamed in primary school of marrying ended up.
Sansa Stark went to Bishop Anstey High School.  She wanted to go to a Convent, but was sent to Bishops, remained resentful for the full seven years, but became a full-on Hilarian in spite of herself.  As is typical of her fellow alumna, she is bright, powerful in her own right, considers “male wisdom” an oxymoron, and marriage is a conversation that’s fairly technical.  As a Hilarian in my life once told me, “Bishops women generally fall into one of three categories: to be married, were married, or with somebody else’s married.” Don’t slay the messenger.  Sansa fits the bill.
Arya Stark, quite naturally, followed her sister to Bishop Anstey, where her mother and her aunties also all went to school.  Actually, Lysa Arryn probably went to Bishop’s Centenary, which would explain her neuroses around her older sister Catelyn Stark nee Tully and her niece Sansa.
Tyrion Lannister is a QRC old boy.  "I drink and I know things," especially the latter part hold true to their spirit.  He runs sh*t behind the scenes, and could easily be the King himself, his influence on the world around him wholly underestimated.  But his ambitions don't run that way.  He just wants live.  Contrary to what might be believed, Tyrion doesn’t suffer from Short Man Syndrome, because all QRC men are 6′2″ or taller in their hearts.
Big brother Jaime Lannister went to Fatima College.  He was the kind of youth whose rich dad facilitated his showing up at school with great hair and the newest trendy sneakers before the ads for them ran twice.  He’s most likely to end up running one of his father's companies at age 17 or taking political office largely off his good looks and considerable arrogance.
Daenerys Targaryen was an expat child who ended up at the International School, but really wanted to run with public school kids.  She was probably popular with the Burger Boys crowd, until people saw her in her uniform for the first time and wondered what she was doing liming downtown.  Her best friend Missandei, a St. Joseph’s Convent St. Joseph grad, continues to roll with her through thick and thin, struggling to keep single mother and senior executive Dany level while quietly managing her own personal dramas with her boyfriend, TT Super League team player-coach and former St. Augustine Senior Comprehensive football captain, Greyworm.
Brienne of Tarth went to San Juan Senior Comprehensive where she survived a co-ed existence, before moving on to A'Levels at Bishop Anstey.  She excelled in the humanities and captained the senior football team, bringing back to back Girls Intercol titles to the Hilarians and won personal awards for being the league’s best fullback.  She was granted a prefect’s badge in Upper Six, where the younger Stark sister became one of her form charges.  She is legendary for beating a ruffian nicknamed “Dog” in the middle of town one Friday evening for disrespecting the Stark girls.
Theon Greyjoy went to St. Mary’s College. He felt himself the cat’s meow and was quite popular with St. Francois Girls, until a Belmont Intermediate youth named Ramsey Bolton thoroughly emasculated him in a Junior Achievement trade fair and made a lie of all Theon’s tales of bravado. He eventually came into himself again in adulthood after a couple years in a sales job that puts hair on his chest and gave him renewed confidence.
BONUS: Nobody knows where Ellaria Sand went to school before she moved in with her children’s father Oberyn Martell, Presentation College Chaguanas grad and foreign-used car dealer, in his inherited Lange Park home.  She doesn’t tell anybody and nobody asks, because she’s fly and distracting.  That probably means that it’s North Eastern College or Iere High School.  She may have had to leave school because she was pregnant with her first before writing CXC.  She and Oberyn look like they were the type to have been breaking school to... yunno.  Oberyn has four kids other than their own four daughters, the Sand Snakes.  But Ellaria doesn’t care, so long as he knows where home is and keeps up his duties there.  Their four girls though were split between Chaguanas North and Chaguanas South Secondary, and spent their days at school chooking fire to start brawls between students of the neighbouring campuses.
Nobody knows where Varys went to school either.  He was probably already an adult before the first Government Exhibition examination was held.  He holds firm to the belief that the English should have never left Trinidad, and will tell anybody willing to hear, albeit very quietly.

Althea McNish Textile designer Althea McNish died aged 95 in 2020. McNish was responsible for some of the 20th century’s most memorable printed fabrics. A hugely influential figure in the world of interior design and fashion, she was also the first woman from the West Indies to rise to international prominence in her field. She claimed to see everything “through a tropical eye” - her greatest contribution was to infuse designs created in Britain with a feel of the Caribbean. Her work from the late 1950s onwards appealed to young consumers who were desperate to move beyond the greyness of the immediate post-second world war years,. Right from the beginning of her career she attracted commissions to design fabrics for big names such as ‘Liberty’ and ‘Heal’s’. McNish worked on dress fabrics for Zika Ascher’s textile company, who supplied them to French fashion houses, including ‘Dior’. Her work was regularly featured in glossy magazines such as ‘Vogue’ and ‘Harper’s Bazaar’. Non-fashion commissions also came her way. McNish designed murals featuring pineapples and pomegranates for restaurants on the ocean-going liner ‘SS Oriana’ (1959), velvet hangings for ‘British Rail’s’ Euston offices in London (1969) and a banner for London’s 'Design Centre’ (1981). Whatever she worked on, McNish’s style brought together natural imagery and abstract forms. Hers was a distinctive interpretation of English artistic tradition allied to a Caribbean-inspired colour palette. Born in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, McNish was the only child of Margaret (nee Bourne), a dressmaker, and her husband, Joseph McNish, a teacher and writer. An enthusiastic painter from an early age, while studying at ‘Bishop Anstey’ high school she joined the ‘Trinidad Art Society’ and had her first work exhibited at the age of 16. West Indian Anthem Helps Promote Unified Regional Identity
Tumblr media
A respected presence in the Trinidad and Tobago business community, Ernie Ross guides Ross Advertising, as well as the socially progressive nonprofit ReThink. In his work as an advertising executive over the decades, Ernie Ross has achieved significant recognition, including Gold and Silver ADDY Awards. In 2006, Mr. Ross co-authored the lyrics of a West Indian Anthem, which was created to promote a unified regional identity across much of the Caribbean. The inspiration was the European Union, which allows countries to retain their national anthems and flags, while also having a flag that represents all members. The anthem that represents the EU is the “Ode to Joy,” an instantly recognizable movement from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. With the West Indies defined by commonalities in heritage, sports such as cricket are a major unifying force. It was fitting then that the one-minute song, approved unanimously at the Caricom Heads meeting, was premiered at a football match between Peru and the Soca Warriors, the national team of Trinidad and Tobago. The world premier followed a rendition of the latter country’s national anthem and was performed by the Bishop Anstey High School Choir, steelband musicians, and the artist Mavis John. This new West Indian Anthem was described by Mr. Ross as transcending the skepticism that many initially felt about the piece and embodying an entire region.

New Post has been published on http://tropicalfete.com/2018/11/12/new-precision-productions-invites-you-to-say-konnichiwa-to-the-osaka-riddim-available-now/
NEW Precision Productions invites you to say Kon'nichiwa to the Osaka Riddim! | AVAILABLE NOW!!
Call it serendipity or maybe a true blessing, but when the universe delivers a moment of inspiration just as you need it, all you can be is thankful.
Earlier this year the team was fortuitous enough to experience such an instant. It came from hundreds of radiant faces dancing delightedly to Precision’s music in Japan.
Two things immediately occurred.
Firstly, a deep swell of gratitude encompassed everyone in studio, and secondly, the team was inspired to pass that feeling along to the world in music and songs.
That flash of motivation spurred this new riddim to life.
So guided by the enthusiasm of fans in Japan and hope filled hearts, Precision Productions would like to invite the Soca loving world to say, Kon’nichiwa to the Osaka Riddim.
5Star Akil jumpstarts things with a fascinating music video that gives us a close up look at the very same enthusiastic Japanese gyrations, which set this riddim into motion.
Then we have LFS Music, who continue to cement their place in Soca, using their boisterous spunk to get masqueraders to “Start It”.
Meanwhile, Preedy, whose animated performances continue to captivate audiences on and off stage, instigates hypnotic wildness with his particular brand of mischief in “Warm Up”.
“Alive and Well” by current Soca Monarch Voice, features the Bishop Anstey High School Choir led by Ms. Lorraine Granderson. The song imparts a strong message with heavenly vocals meant to fortify listeners and douse them in tuneful rapture.
Crowd favourite Kerwin Du Bois, closes this magnetic riddim out with “Right For Somebody”. In this one, Kerwin shares from his soul as he reminds everyone, regardless of what the world may say, we are all already more than good enough, just as we are.
Precision Productions makes several ambitious musical leaps in this riddim, building a sound that carries the incendiary spark of melodious mastery the team has become quite well known for.
Ready yourselves, because this riddim will have partygoers soaring to inconceivable heights as they take on the bacchanal of Carnival 2019.
