A Vinicultural Retreat: Reviewing Las Alcobas in Napa Valley, California
Courtesy of The Points Guy by Zach Griff
On the heels of Marriott’s introduction of (the dreaded) Category 8 award tier, TPG wanted to review some of the most aspirational properties in the Marriott Bonvoy program. Having recently reviewed the Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park and the Scrub Island Resort, Spa and Marina, next up was Las Alcobas — a Luxury Collection Hotel that has been on our radar for a while.
Tumblr media
Would the hotel’s rooms, facilities, and service make the property worth 85,000 points or $800+ per night? Well, as I found out, there wasn’t a simple answer to that question.
In This Post
Booking
Because I was traveling on a quiet weekend, room rates at Las Alcobas were a bit lower than normal, hovering around $725 per night. We booked right before the introduction of Category 8, so we only paid 60,000 points per night — worth roughly $480 according to TPG‘s April valuations. To sweeten the already fantastic deal, as a Marriott Ambassador Elite member, I was eligible for a space-available upgrade (up to a suite), free breakfast, and guaranteed 4pm late checkout.
With Las Alcobas having moved into Category 8, it now requires 85,000 points per night for a free night. When Marriott launches peak and off-peak pricing later in 2019, the nightly points rate will jump to 100,000 points in peak season and drop to 70,000 points during off-peak times.
We still don’t know which dates will qualify for peak and off-peak rates, but I’d venture to guess that there will be lots of peak dates, particularly over busy weekends. So if you’re thinking of booking a trip to Napa during a busy time period (holiday season, spring break, summer long weekends), it would be best to book now before rates jump by 15,000 points per night.
If you were considering paying cash for a stay at this property, you could replicate the same perks as top-tier Marriott status by booking through the American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts program, which you can access through The Platinum Card® from American Express. Plus, you’d also receive a $100 spa credit to be used during the stay.
Location
Las Alcobas is located in St. Helena in California’s Napa Valley. The resort is about a 40-minute drive from Sonoma County Airport (STS) and an hour and a half from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) without traffic. Since traffic across the Bay Bridge is an almost 24/7 reality, I’d recommend budgeting closer to 2-2.5 hours for the drive from SFO. Sonoma County has daily commercial flights on Alaska, American, Allegiant, and United from various cities on the West Coast, but SFO is the arrival airport of choice from points outside the West Coast.
Tumblr media
There isn’t much public transportation in the area, so taking a ride share or renting a car are the only viable options for getting to the resort. Just make sure to leave the keys to the rental at the hotel while you’re out enjoying a wine tasting.
I arrived into STS airport from LAX and ordered a Lyft for the 40-minute drive to Las Alcobas. I chose Lyft because Uber only offers its pricey Black cars in Sonoma County, which meant that by using Lyft I saved $80 ($45 for Lyft vs. $125 for Uber).
Tumblr media
The hotel is located on Main Street in St. Helena, a 15-minute walk from the center of town. You don’t have to go far for the wine, however, as the hotel neighbors the Beringer Winery and actually overlooks a portion of the Beringer vineyards.
Check-in
Upon arriving at the hotel, I was greeted by a friendly bellman who introduced me to a front-desk associate, who was already standing outside waiting to welcome me to the property. The associate asked for my credit card, confirmed my stay details, and escorted me to the room for an in-room check-in. He welcomed me to my upgraded top floor room overlooking the Beringer vineyards and explained many of the room’s features.
After the brief orientation, he opened the mini bar and offered me a half bottle of sparkling wine as the welcome amenity. While I certainly could’ve used some cheese and crackers with the champagne (confession: I’m a lightweight …), overall, my check-in experience started to convince me that this property does deserve its place in Category 8.
Tumblr media
Room
The room, and especially the incredible balcony and view, further validated Las Alcobas’ premier Category 8 rating.
Tumblr media
The hotel has 68 guest rooms, and about 10 of those are junior and one-bedroom suites. The hotel’s rooms are located in four buildings; two buildings overlooking the vineyards separated by the hotel pool, one building overlooking the Beringer estate.
Tumblr media
The fourth building, called the Acacia House, located by the entrance of the hotel, is a renovated rustic barn that houses the hotel’s restaurant and tiny reception area.
Tumblr media
I was given a Vineyard View 2 queen guest room in one of the hotel’s two main buildings. For a hotel with 68 rooms, there are lots of rooms categories — 12 total!
Tumblr media
The hotel assigns room categories based on which building you are in, as well as what level your room is on. Technically, I received a three-category upgrade from a Superior Guest Room, but the only real difference was that I had a better view on a higher floor.
Tumblr media
The room was stunning, and the minimalist decor blended naturally with the outdoorsy feel of the hotel.
Tumblr media
The beds were super comfortable and the linens were crisp and fresh.
Tumblr media
There were two outlets and USB ports located behind the nightstand for easy charging of all of my devices.
Tumblr media
The minibar was located in the corner of the room and featured a complimentary French press, along with bottled water that was restocked daily.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Near the entrance hallway was the closet and bathroom. The closet was large enough to fit all my hanging clothes, plus the two oversize plush bathrobes that were already hanging there.
Tumblr media
The bathroom was split into two separate rooms, one with a toilet and sink and the other with a shower/tub combo and sink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I was traveling with a friend, this set up proved to be ideal. He could shower, while I used the sink.
Tumblr media
The toilet was a Japanese Toto electronic toilet that welcomed me to the bathroom by automatically opening the toilet seat — and then it automatically closed when I left.
Tumblr media
The highlight of the room was the outdoor deck with fire pit overlooking the incredible view of the vineyards. The balcony proved to be the best place to relax and enjoy some wine.
Tumblr media
The sofa and chairs were extremely inviting and comfortable, and the fire pit was heavenly on cool evenings. Fortunately, almost 95% of the rooms feature a fire pit, so you don’t need to rely on an upgrade to get one of them.
Tumblr media
Food and Beverage
The hotel has one on-site restaurant called the Acacia House. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. On weekdays, breakfast is served from 7-10:30am; on the weekend, breakfast hours are extended to 2pm to accommodate late risers (read: hungover lightweights).
Tumblr media
The restaurant decor matched that of the hotel and was quite fitting for a California farm-to-table restaurant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Breakfast is served a la carte, and my Marriott Ambassador Elite membership granted my friend and me two continental breakfasts listed at $39 per person. In practice, we were able to apply the credit to any dish we ordered.
On the first morning, I ordered the omelette ($19), which was quite tasty. I then decided to order toast ($5) and breakfast potatoes ($9).
Tumblr media
The following morning, I ordered the cured smoked salmon ($18), followed, once again, by the toast and potatoes … my favorite hangover remedy. I also ate dinner one evening at the Acacia House. The restaurant was crowded with non-hotel guests, but I didn’t have to wait too long for a table.
To start, I ordered an endive and apples salad ($15) and finished with the whole roasted acorn squash ($24). While the salad tasted fresh and light, the squash was completely overcooked and under seasoned.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My friend enjoyed his hamachi crudo ($21) and English pea soup ($13).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outside the restaurant is a bar area with indoor and outdoor seating. While I didn’t spend time at the bar during my stay, I observed that many guests enjoyed a drink or two (or three) in the afternoons.
Tumblr media
Overall, the food was above average, but it didn’t feel up to the promises of a Category 8 property. My recommendation is to use your breakfast credit at the hotel restaurant and go elsewhere for your other meals. After all, this is Napa and The French Laundry is only a 15-minute drive away.
Amenities
Las Alcobas definitely has enough five-star amenities to warrant its Category 8 rating. Even though the hotel was almost completely full during our stay (I overheard someone say that it was running at 95% occupancy), I never felt that it was too crowded.
Tumblr media
While the grounds aren’t all that expansive, the hotel does have a few different areas for activities that helped spread out the crowds.
Tumblr media
The main sitting/relaxing area was the hotel’s long rectangular pool located between two of the main buildings.
Tumblr media
There were many yellow lounge chairs set up by the pool, which was heated to 84 degrees, but I forgot my bathing suit, so I stuck to relaxing beside the pool.
Tumblr media
Next to the pool were a few outdoor couches and chairs set up around a large fire pit overlooking the vineyards.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sitting out here was very relaxing, and my dermatologist father would definitely appreciate that the hotel offers free sunscreen at the pool. Surprisingly, there wasn’t any water available near the pool or outdoor couches, so come hydrated.
Back near the center of the resort was the hotel’s spa called Atrio. With 60-minute massages starting at $180 before tax and tip, I passed on a spa treatment.
Tumblr media
I did check out the other spa facilities, which include a locker room, steam room, and relaxation area. It definitely would have been nice if the hotel also added a sauna or jacuzzi to the spa area (especially considering the low nighttime temperatures).
The relaxation room was nice, though the highlight was definitely the complimentary mixed nuts and dried fruits, hot beverages, and flavored waters.
Tumblr media
The gym was located on the ground floor of one of the guest room buildings. It overlooks the Beringer estate and featured plenty of modern equipment that further helped me sweat out both my hangover and those potatoes I ate to combat that hangover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to the cardio and weight area, there was a yoga studio where the hotel offers complimentary yoga and TRX classes every morning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hotel set up some mountain bikes for rental outside of the gym, but I wasn’t sure where exactly they expected guests to ride, since the main road near the hotel was a two-lane highway.
Tumblr media
Wi-Fi across the property was fast, free, and much needed. Cell phone reception (on Verizon and T-Mobile) was quite spotty across the property and the surrounding area, so my girlfriend back home appreciated my Wi-Fi connection almost as much as I did. Download speeds were around 50 mbps and upload speeds at 10 mbps.
Service
Although the service was promising when I checked in, it actually proved to be the most disappointing aspect of this stay.
We asked the hotel about local transportation options other than Uber/Lyft and were excited to hear that a house car was available to hotel guests. They informed us that we’d just need to call down a few minutes before to request the car. When we called to request the car, we were told that it had been pre-booked for the entire evening. Why advertise a service that isn’t actually available for use? And, if we needed to make reservations for the car, why not tell us?
Furthermore, I needed to wash clothes that I had used earlier in my trip. I brought my laundry bag to the reception area on Saturday morning and was told that the hotel outsources their laundry service and it had been already been picked up for the day. What five-star hotel doesn’t offer expedited and readily available laundry service?
Tumblr media
Finally, the most egregious service failure occurred the morning we checked out. I called down to the front desk and asked to reconfirm our 4pm guaranteed late checkout thanks to my Ambassador Elite membership. The front-desk manager profusely apologized, but told me that Las Alcobas is considered a resort and therefore does not guarantee 4pm late checkout to elite members. I took out my phone, browsed Marriott’s resort listings, and noticed that Las Alcobas was not listed as a resort, and I’d therefore be guaranteed a 4pm late checkout. Armed with the new information, I called back down to the front desk manager, who told me that Marriott’s website was wrong, but he offered a 4pm checkout as a one-time courtesy. Then, at 3pm, a full hour before our checkout, housekeeping knocked and opened our door(!) asking us why we haven’t yet checked out. #Bonvoyed
Overall Impression
Does this property deserve its Category 8 placement? It’s not an easy answer.
Tumblr media
Las Alcobas is certainly a gorgeous property in California’s Napa Valley. The hotel features a stunning design and blends perfectly into the nearby vineyards. The rooms, especially the balcony and firepits, could be featured on the cover of luxe travel magazines. However, what lay hidden beneath the glamorous façade were some serious service failures and miscommunications. If some of the service elements could be improved, then I’d definitely consider Las Alcobas worthy of inclusion among the 62 Category 8 hotels in Marriott’s Bonvoy program.

The Final Sprint: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Whew, it’s been a CRAZY six weeks! And got down to crunch time: shipping my goods, selling the convertible (thank you, Jesus) and flying away from the Bay.
Naturally, Murphy’s Law ran it’s course and nearly everything that could go wrong did.
I packed up alllll the things for LuggageFoward to ship via UPS:
Tumblr media
BTW the fan was *not* being shipped, that went to the trash pile, but I did have the pleasure of carring that silly fan all around San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma and Livermore so that I could exercise with a cool breeze #priorities
Luggage included: 2 bike bags (one w the frame, one w the wheels), a 50 lb Wahoo Kickr, a roller bag, a large back pack.
UPS was scheduled to come pick up the luggage between 3 and 7 PM on Friday, and I was ready for them and looking forward to literally dumping some heavy baggage.
Automobiles
I had some work to blow through in the morning and a press interview at noon, so decided if I left at 1 PM to get Michael’s car appraised at Carmax ahead of selling it to them on Sunday and also pick up the bike I was renting to ride all weekend that I’d surely be back by 3. Right? Right????!!!!
As evidenced from earlier posts, Michael’s car is a tiny convertible that I’ve been constantly tetris-ing all my s#it into for the last six weeks. On top of that, the radio hasn’t worked in approximately two years. The windows don’t align fully to the car when rolled up, so they create a wind tunnel unless you roll them down and then back up every time you get into the car. But they have to go all the way down before they go back up again. And most recently, I discovered that the roof leaks on both the passenger and driver side. Have I mentioned that we’ve been having apocolyptic rain lately in the Bay Area? So to say that I have a hate-hate relationship with that car might be an understatement.
I took the car to Carmax, and the staff was friendly and quickly started on the appraisal that should only take 30 minutes which generally involves testing all the features and taking it for a short spin to identify any issues. Since said car is a convertible, they also tested the top, letting it down and then back u..... Oh wait, it’s STUCK! Yeah, the convertible top got stuck going back on and then wouldn’t go in either direction. The car looked like a giant UFO and not something that I could drive around with more rain inevitable over my final two days. And I was on a time crunch! So they generated the appraisal and confirmed I could come back before 9 that night to finalize the check and fortunately we only lost out on $500 - 1000 with that issue. But what was I going to drive and how was I going to get this bike???
The Carmax people (they were all really awesome) drove me to the Enterprise that was serendipitously right next to the bike shop to rent a car for the next two days. Clearly I needed something full sized ‘cause I still had a lot of stuff. In what was probably the best thing that’s happened to me through this whole scenario, I got a free upgrade, though it was a bit lost on me bc I didn’t know what to do with all the extra buttons and there did not appear to be any bun warmers (the only feature that really matters):
Tumblr media
I then popped over to the bike shop and grabbed the bike and took it apart enough to fit it into the back. Thank goodness for black leather vs chain grease.
I had ten minutes to get “home” before my 3 PM window started and naturally Friday traffic was a nightmare in full force. I arrived back to my friend’s condo - where I’d been staying most recently - at 3:30/3:40 but there was not sign on the door that UPS had missed me and by calling LuggageForward, Michael and I determined that I had not missed the driver and they hadn’t yet been to pick up the goods.
Now to get back to work and wrap up things, and also I was STARVING. My day had started with a 4,300 yard swim and in all the chaos I hadn’t had time to eat lunch and really hadn’t eaten much at all on the day. This was a good time to test out DoorDash. I was debating between a veggie burger and burrito/enchilada, but ultimatley opted for Mexican. It took just about 30 minutes and the delivery fee was surprisingly not outrageous and the food was in good condition. I would definitely recommend this service and use it again.
6:55 rolls around and no UPS, so I start to get concerned. I call and they report that the driver made an attempt but didn’t have the condo flat # in his log, just the street address. So why didn’t he call???? I waited until 7:30 to hear back from the flurry of customer service phone calls which seemed to have ceased, and then headed to Carmax to wrap up that ordeal. About ten minutes into the trip, UPS calls to tell me the driver just made his last stop and will come back by, so I told them I was out but close and did a u-turn to head home. I get back home and wait. and wait. and make more customer service phone calls. The UPS driver noted in his log that he waited for 15 minutes, though I know he did not because it overlaps with the time I was at the condo... The “resolution” was that I would need to drop off my luggage at a UPS store by 1PM the next day. So it’s a good thing I got a full-sized rental car!
To cap off an exhausting Friday, I went back to Carmax and wrapped up everything with the sale of the car and got to sleep for my last ride with my Saturday cycling crew. For a change, the weather looked favorable and I was excited to pedal outside on a road bike, evidently my current anxiety about riding outside is exclusive to tri bikes?
I woke up on Saturday and rode to meet my crew. I noticed that the clouds didn’t look like dry weather clouds but the weather forecast said no rain, so that had to be right. Right??? We got sprinkled on during the first part of the ride, but nothing major, so went out to the long climb that was the cornerstone of the ride and climbed for five miles or so, which was truly amazing. I would have loved to do more, but needed to turn around to get all my luggage to UPS by 1.
I flipped and started descending. It felt weird, I was having to ride in the little (easy) ring pedaling downhill because the headwind was so wildly strong. And then it started to rain. Not to sprinkle, but rain HARD. With the headwind, it felt like hail in the face. On this day that was supposed to be dry #MurphysLaw.
I made it back to the condo, soaked and freezing, trembling and unable to feel my extremities. I ran around a bit and took a hot shower to warm up, also because I was covered in mud from riding in the weather, and then scurried to get all my heavy bags into the car to trek over to UPS:
Tumblr media
That’s my bike in the back seat. Thank goodness for a full-sized car!
I arrived just before 1 and unloaded all my goods. The older lady working at the UPS store started scanning my bags and taking them to the back. And then she picked up the Kickr. And promptly dropped it on my foot and told me that my stuff was too heavy and I’d need to the carry it to the pick-up location myself. Tell me about it, lady, I’ve been dragging these bags around for weeks! And BTW she also let me know that since we were shipping ground, I didn’t actually have to drop the bags by 1 PM because that was only for air, my bags would be picked up on Monday. Okay cool, glad I rushed around for that.
I was happy to spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying some wine and a final toast with Carry and Kathy.
Trains
Sunday was mostly as expected. Riding that bike again, with no rain this time! And then cleaning the remnants of that rainy ride off the bike and out of the car to return both.
I dropped off the car and was trying to rearrange my luggage for the flight into just four bags (check two, carry two) but was unsuccesful. Though I did manage to get down to five! I also hadn’t been able to shower yet, so I was gross and dirty and hungry. The fellas at the rental car place let me know they could drop me at BART when I returned the car, but Enterprise was closed that day. Huh?? So I called a Lyft to carry me and my five heavy bags to BART:
Tumblr media
Where was I headed? Good question! My dear friend Melissa from ATL was in San Francisco for work and had arrived a day early so that we could hang out, so I was en route to say with her in the city and enjoy some quality time.
I made it to the BART stop nearest her hotel with alllll five of my heavy bags in tow, hanging off my person. I disembarked the train and started up the crowded escalator. The moving stair hit my roller bag sending it sideways, and I was struggling to regain control. The bag touched the lady in front of my on the escalator who then proceeded to make a bitc#y comment to my dirty, hangry, frustrated, stressed out self. This may or may not have escalated into a shouting match that turned heads in the middle of the BART station, between two ladies whose hands were full of bags or boxes and were most likely angry at their situations more than anything else. At any rate, that was the pinnacle - or low point - of the whole situation. I hope.
Planes
I’m not done yet. I have a full day of flying OAK -> SLC -> DTW -> MDC. And then later to actually get to Austin. Almost done!

A Cannabis Traveler’s Guide to Finding the Real Humboldt County
David Bienenstock of Leafly Reports:
As of New Year’s Day 2018, adults 21 and over—from anywhere in the world—can finally come to California and legally purchase, possess, and consume some of the best cannabis the world has to offer.
Pack your bags, and pack a bowl, because we’re heading to find the heart of California’s true Weed Country.
Tourists already spend $126 billion annually in the Golden State, and a lot of them will no doubt drop even more cash to acquire a few grams of real OG Kush and other local cannabis products now that they’re readily available. But what if you want to do more than simply inhale California’s finest flowers? What if you want to dig a little deeper, and fully immerse yourself in the state’s legendary cannabis scene? Just as Napa and Sonoma are known worldwide as Wine Country, Humboldt County is equally renowned as the epicenter of American cannabis cultivation and culture. So pack your bags, and pack a bowl, because we’re heading to find the heart of California’s true Weed Country.

The Ultimate Cannabis Road Trip Through California
The best time to visit Humboldt County is between May and November (if you like, plan ahead to have your visit coincide with one of Humboldt County’s key cultural events, listed here). Since the vast majority of travelers arrive in Humboldt from the south, the following three-day itinerary starts and ends in San Francisco. Before you leave, maximize your experience by doing a little research—I recommend Humboldt: Life on America’s Marijuana Frontier for an insightful non-fiction look at how three generations of exiled hippies and outlaw cannabis growers have forever altered life “behind the redwood curtain.” For the trip north, download a few episodes of “Bud Time,” a weekly Humboldt-based cannabis podcast.

DAY ONE: HEADING TO HUMBOLDT
 Stop #1: The World’s First Solar-Powered Dispensary
(Courtesy of Solar Living Institute)
Make your first stop Emerald Pharms in Hopland, a two-hour drive north on Highway 101 from San Francisco. Housed on a 12-acre permaculture oasis (the Solar Living Institute), the world’s only solar-powered cannabis dispensary specializes in eco-friendly cultivation practices and regional heirloom cannabis genetics. Emerald Pharms’ knowledgeable staff can clue you into the latest happenings in the local cannabis scene, and help you navigate their menu (don’t miss the Gelato from True Humboldt).

After making your purchases, spend some time wandering the grounds, which are covered in ponds, trails, and installations demonstrating eco-friendly agriculture and natural building techniques.
Stop #2: Sustainably-Sourced Lunch
(Courtesy of Tastebuds)
Twenty minutes north from Emerald Pharms, Ukiah is the largest city in Mendocino County, which along with Humboldt and Trinity Counties comprises Northern California’s legendary Emerald Triangle. Here, we’ve definitely entered Weed Country. Ukiah’s also a nice spot to stop for lunch. I personally frequent:
Tastebuds, a vegetarian Jamaican–Caribbean restaurant featuring organic, sustainable local produce with roots reggae in the background. Go for a combo plate with lentils and plantains ($12) and a ginger beer.
Ukiah Brewing Company, where you can pair a flight brewed on the premises ($9) with locally and sustainably sourced sandwiches, pizza, or seafood. Get the Cowboy Burger ($16), which comes with bacon, onion rings, BBQ sauce, white cheddar, lettuce, and tomato on top.
Stop #3: Ukiah Natural Foods Store
(Rawpixel/iStock)
Odds are you’re not quite chill enough yet to properly enter Humboldt County. This is not your fault. You may live somewhere that the pot laws are oppressive, or else you’re used to people looking down on those who get blazed rather than wasted. Our stop for the night will be the perfect place to unwind and work it all out of your system before we cross into the promised land. Only thing is, they don’t have any food for sale there, so you’ll want to pick up a few provisions before departing Ukiah—enough to make one dinner and one breakfast (don’t forget the coffee) in the lodging’s well-appointed shared kitchen.
Ever been inside a natural foods coop? It’s pretty rad. The Ukiah Natural Foods Coop is a non-profit, member-owned, open-to-the-public retail shop with a wide selection of local produce, meats, and prepared foods. You can pick up something ready to eat or ingredients for a favorite recipe. Now, on to the hot springs.
Stop #4: Orr Hot Springs Resort
(Courtesy of Orr Hot Springs Resort)
Soak as the sun sets. Sweat it all out in the sauna. Jump in the cold pool. Go get stoned in the smoking area. Repeat.
Let’s get this out of the way: If you’re not comfortable with naked bodies of all types, then Orr Hot Springs Resort—built in the late 1930s and designed for subdued contemplation—may not be the place for you. While you don’t have to get naked to enjoy the mineral baths, sauna, and lithium pool, you’re not likely to avoid seeing others who do. If you’re a little modest but still want to try it out, make use of the designated smoking area on the premises to sample the great cannabis you bought in Hopland and just relax, man.

What Are the Best Cannabis Strains for Anxiety?
Advanced reservations are strongly recommended, especially in the summer and on weekends. You can reserve a secluded campsite with a raised redwood platform ($70/night per person includes full use of facilities) or rent a room or yurt ($210/night for three people). Check in at the main lodge, get settled in your site or room, and have a quick soak before taking a hike through nearby Montgomery Woods, a secluded virgin redwood grove. The woods are home to a three-mile loop trail through some of the tallest trees on the West Coast. Breathe in unspoiled air and revel in the fact that you haven’t had phone service since you turned off the 101 and into this magical valley.
Post-hike, return to the hot springs. Soak again as the sun sets. Sweat it all out in the sauna. Jump in the cold pool. Repeat. Go get stoned again in the designated smoking area. Make dinner. Eat dinner. Take a night soak under the stars. Smoke one last joint before turning in for a great night’s sleep.
DAY TWO: BEYOND THE REDWOOD CURTAIN
In Humboldt County, grow ops are the largest local industry and that scuzzy old guy on a park bench might be a millionaire.
Waking up at Orr Hot Springs, you’re free to stay for a leisurely morning and use the facilities until 2:00 p.m., but you’ll probably want to get on the road earlier than that. Certainly a morning puff, a soak, and a hearty breakfast are in order though.
Heading back to the 101 and then north, you’ll cross the Humboldt County line in about two hours as you’re passing through Richardson Grove—a 2,000-acre state park that straddles the highway. If it’s a hot day, consider undertaking a search for a not-so-secret swimming hole on the banks of the nearby Eel River.
Stop #1: Lunch Like a Trimmer (or Grower)
(Courtesy of Hemp Connection)
Many tourists in this part of California make a stop at the Benbow Historic Inn, but for a taste of true Humboldt County cannabis culture, head past that exit and lunch where the local cannabis pros do—in Garberville.
Trimmers lunch at Calico's Café. Growers head to the more upscale Cecil’s New Orleans Bistro.
Last time I visited, my local connection parked his car on Main Street and immediately a bearded young man approached us. “Two pounds a day, bro,” he promised, making his hand into a scissor lest we miss his meaning. One of countless “trimmigrants” who travel to Humboldt County from around the globe every autumn seeking a chance to trim cannabis for cash, he promised a full day’s work for a full day’s pay (which sources say is about $100–150 per pound plus room and board).
 RELATED STORY
California Farmers: Grow Big or Go Home?
“So, do you want to eat where the trimmers eat or where the growers eat?” my friend asked me. The question delineates the clearest socio-economic distinction to be made in this county, where “grow ops” represent by far the largest local industry and that scuzzy old guy on a park bench with a ZZ Top beard might be a millionaire. I opted for lunch with trimmers at Calico’s Café, which operates at a snail’s pace but serves up tasty pasta bolognese ($15) in an extremely chill setting. If you want to break bread with the growers, head to the more upscale Cecil’s New Orleans Bistro, where a plate of pecan-encrusted catfish with garlic mash and mixed vegetables can be had for $27.
After lunch check out The Hemp Connection, “the first and oldest hemp store in the United States,” which sells hemp clothes, beauty treatments, and more, and has served as a de-facto community center and local cannabis activism hub since it opened in 2012.
Stop #2: Shelter Cove
(yourmap/iStock)
From Garberville, it’s less than an hour to the coast—specifically, to the truly stunning black sand beach at Shelter Cove. Be prepared for a windy drive full of hairpin switchbacks. Park at the public lot and hike down to an expansive protected cove with several large rock outcroppings perfect for climbing. Pro tip: Make sure you roll one up before leaving your car (to avoid being foiled by the wind), and don’t stray too close to the water—sudden rip tides are occasionally capable of pulling the unsuspecting out to sea.
Stop #3: Along the Lost Coast to Eureka
(Courtesy of Humboldt Bay Provisions)
Those with 4WD and a sense of adventure can head north on back roads along the Lost Coast.
From Shelter Cove, those with 4WD and a sense of adventure (or a decent rental car and full insurance) can head north on back roads along the Lost Coast and experience one of the most breathtaking drives in the United States. Assuming the road’s not washed out and you don’t hit a bad pothole, that route will take a little over three hours before you hit Eureka. (Alternately, get there in two hours on the 101.) On arrival, park in “old town” so you can explore the small yet well-preserved historic district that’s been Humboldt’s commercial and cultural center since 1850.
What’s there to do? Plenty. Humboldt Bay Provisions offers a curated selection of local beer, wine, cider, cheese, salmon, oysters, produce, meats, and breads in an elegant tasting room, and while they can’t sell Humboldt-grown cannabis just yet, they do promote select local cannabis brands. The interactive Kinetic Museum catches visitors up on five decades of pedal-powered race history and showcases incredible kinetic sculptures from the local Kinetic Grand Championship competition. The historic racing grounds at Samoa Drag Strip host street-legal drag races from April through September featuring classic cars, motorcycles, and electric vehicles.
Stop #4: Hotel Arcata
(BlakeDavidTaylor/iStock)
Everybody’s baked, everybody knows you’re baked, and it’s all okay. Bottle that wonderful feeling inside.
Walking into the Hotel Arcata (a 20-minute drive north from Eureka) feels like taking a trip back in time to 1915, long before cannabis prohibition was ever implemented. The building was first opened as “Sportsman’s Headquarters,” and attracted affluent hunters to what was then a wholly remote town. A century later, everything’s still made of rich dark wood; old photographs line the walls; and standard rooms ($120 with tax) include queen beds, clawfoot tubs, and free wifi. Word to the wise: Smoking rooms are available. Get checked in, freshen up, roll a few joints for the evening, and you’re ready to head out on the town.
The hotel is located right on Arcata’s historic town plaza, so you’re at the heart of the action in this lively, cannabinoid-soaked town of 18,000, and within easy walking distance of pretty much any place to eat or go honky-tonking with the local cannabis community. Your options include:
The Alibi, a local institution that elevates the dank old dive bar to its highest ideal. It’s a great place to get plugged into the city’s unique vibe and meet some new local friends.
Arcata Theater Lounge: This old movie palace now hosts a wide variety of live shows ranging from performances by Arcata’s improv champions On the Spot to DJ sets by local EDM artists. All events are cemented by a palpable sense of community that’s the staple of this creative oasis.
Savage Henry Comedy, which hosts frequent shows around town including a weekly Tuesday open mic at The Jam. Anything they’re involved in will bring out local growers and trimmers alike—because everyone loves to laugh when they’re high.
Richard’s Goat Tavern for house-infused cocktails, fine imported teas, and Humboldt-made sweet and savory snacks in a refined but slightly raucous little bar.
Don’s Donuts and Deli. Remember all those joints you rolled before leaving the hotel? Well, those got smoked. And the bars are closed. And you went and hung out with the drum-circle freaks in the plaza for a bit. So now what? How about some fresh donuts served in a 24-hour shop that plays techno music and has its own laser light show running? Be prepared to wait in line behind a bunch of other late-night stoners for the one can’t-miss on this list. Everybody’s baked, everybody knows you’re baked, and it’s all okay. Bottle that wonderful feeling inside to bring back home with you when you leave.
 DAY THREE: BACK TO REALITY
If you’re lucky, there’s half a donut on your bedside table when you wake up. Go ahead, devour it, you’re on vacation. Then check out and hit the road—you’re headed another hour north before turning around and heading back home.
Stop #1: Wake and Bake in Trinidad
(CampPhoto/iStock)
A 15-minute drive brings you to the picturesque coastal town of Trinidad. Park near the lighthouse and walk the path to the beach. Smoke the last of the cannabis you bought at Emerald Pharms and keep an eye out for migrating whales as you take in the beauty of this rugged, isolated seascape. Once you climb back up to the lighthouse, it’s just a short walk to a lovely little hippie café for breakfast.
At Beachcomber Café you can sit outside in the sea air, satiate your munchies with farm-fresh eggs and house-made hot sauce, sip locally roasted fair trade coffee, and people-watch as growers and trimmers come in before a long day toiling in the fields (or manicuring two pounds of bud).
Wait for your high to wear off before you keep trekking north to Agate Beach (where you can collect semi-precious stones) and beyond that to the incredible Fern Canyon and Del Norte Coast Redwoods (where the Endor scenes for Star Wars were filmed). Once you’ve seen your fill, turn the car around for the journey south back to San Francisco.
Stop #2: Arcata, Round Two

Ask the budtenders to help you pick heirloom Humboldt strains that are hard to come by anyplace else.
You’ll have to pass back through Arcata no matter which way you slice it, but there’s still more to see if you’re not in a rush. Humboldt Patient Resource Centeris one of the oldest cannabis dispensaries in California, and has been at the forefront of the cannabis movement locally for nearly 20 years. Their in-house cannabis is Clean Green certified—ask the budtenders to help you pick out a few heirloom Humboldt strains that are hard to come by anyplace else.
It’s also worth calling ahead to set up a stop at Emerald Glass Gallery (open Saturdays from noon to 6:00 p.m., or by appointment). This is one of the country’s premier functional art glass galleries, featuring work from top local artists and big names from around the world.
Stop #3: Historic Ferndale

Heading south from Arcata gets you to Ferndale in 40 minutes. Park at Ferndale Historic Cemetery, then follow one of the trails leading up into the woods. From a clearing above the cemetery, you can have a toke of true Humboldt cannabis and take in an idyllic view of this untouched Victorian village, the Eel River, and even the Pacific Ocean. Cure your hunger at Poppa Joe’s (be warned: they close at 2:00 p.m.): This is the place in Ferndale for down-home country cooking. In back, retired farmers play cards at their own designated table, but you should sit at the counter so you can eavesdrop on local gossip and watch an expert grill team cook your lunch to order. If it happens to be Wednesday, count yourself lucky and get the biscuits and gravy.
Stop #4: Avenue of the Giants

On the road again, another 40 minutes brings you to the northern turn-off for the Avenue of the Giants. It’s a 31-mile route running parallel to Highway 101 through some of the oldest-growth redwoods in the United States. Don’t just roll through and marvel from inside the car: Stop at one of the many trailheads along the way and take a nice long meditative hike.
Make sure to find a discreet spot and enjoy a little more of that fine herb from Arcata. This is the perfect spot to savor all the incredible memories of the last three days. Give quiet thanks to Humboldt County for its many decades of service in keeping cannabis culture alive despite tremendous opposition.
Stop #5: Confusion Hill

Before you say goodbye to the Emerald Triangle entirely, make a final stop at Confusion Hill, a popular roadside attraction right off Highway 101 that’s been open since 1949 and promises “mystery, fun, and family entertainment.” This includes the World Famous Gravity House, the Redwood Shoe House, the Ripley’s Believe It or Not “World’s Tallest Freestanding Redwood Chainsaw Carving,” and the unique miniature Mountain Train Ride. I could explain more, but why ruin the surprise?
Editor’s note: Never drive under the influence of cannabis or consume in violation of any state or local law, and always keep your cannabis sealed and locked away in the trunk while on the road.
