Intertwined- Chapter 3
Tumblr media
Chapter: 3/9
Additional Notes: I have up to chapter 5 posted on my AO3, WizardGlick, if you're impatient. Some vocab, in case you were curious: A glossectomy is surgery to remove part or all of the tongue. A scold's bridle is sort of human muzzle with a spike to press the tongue down.
Chapter Content Warnings: It's hanahaki time, babey. That entails respiratory distress and coughing up flowers. No blood. Yet.
Excerpt: “Poof,” said Remus. “Abraca-douchebag. I heal thee. C’mere, Snakey, let me lay my hands on you.”
Janus sighed but obliged, and let Remus touch him with his hand curled in the sign of benediction, then in the shocker. “Gross.”
"Um, Janus?" Patton asked, slowing their pace a little. At Janus' inquiring look, he continued in an almost timid voice, "Where are we going?"
"To my dungeon of depraved delights, obviously," Janus said with a roll of his eyes. He regretted it instantly; he'd lashed out instinctively, assuming that the hesitance in Patton's voice had been calculated, but of course it wasn't. Patton didn't work like that. "Somewhere we can talk."
"Is Re--" Patton stopped himself. "Is anyone else going to be there?'
"No," said Janus, deep in thought. He was working on constructing someplace entirely new, a den of his own design where they could talk without worrying about Virgil lurking or Remus popping up to make things awkward.
He worked it out while they walked, trusting the halls to lengthen while he constructed a brand new parlor entirely from his own imagination.
The final product was shiny with brass and black lacquer on the wooden bar and cabinets, all unnecessary flourishes and overlapping lines. It was a shadowy space in Janus' mind, sequestered and private and dimly lit with Edison bulbs. He only realized he'd leaned too hard into the ‘hidden’ aspect when they reached a plain brass ring set into the carpeting.
"What's that?" Patton asked, stopping well short of it.
"I'll show you." Janus stepped forward, wishing he could lead Patton by the hand. He hooked one finger on the ring and pulled. It rotated on hidden hinges, revealing itself as a trapdoor. Janus forced himself to smile as though this was normal, and gave a little flourish with his free hand.
"Oh," said Patton in a thin voice. "A dark, shadowy staircase. Um…" He shuffled backwards. "Are there gonna be spiders?"
"Yes, this was all part of my elaborate plan to lead you to a torture chamber." Janus said, smiling gently so Patton would know he was only teasing.
"So no spiders?" Janus shook his head, lifting his eyebrows expectantly. Patton nodded, his eyes lingering on Janus' for a second, and stepped onto the staircase.
"There's a handrail," Janus said, awkwardly attempting to walk to the stairs without letting the trapdoor fall shut. He managed it eventually and followed Patton down the stairs, barely resisting the childish urge to grab onto the back of Patton's shirt.
" This is your living room?" Patton asked once they'd reached the bottom of the stairs.
"No, it's the bathroom," Janus said. Before he could stop himself, he added, "Do you like it?" Oh, pathetic. He crossed his arms to keep from dragging his hands down his face. Anything for that sweet rush of endorphins when Patton deigned to smile on him. He was doomed.
Patton nodded, spinning in a circle as he looked around. "It's like a… One of those…" He looked at Janus, squinting in the low light, and snapped his fingers a few times. "You know, with a password and all that."
"A speakeasy," Janus said, smiling a little at the irony.
Patton seemed to grasp it, too, because he laughed and said, "Easy for me to say."
"So to speak," Janus agreed.
Patton seemed to forget his woes for one breathtaking moment; he smiled radiantly at Janus. All the lights burned a little brighter until Janus caught himself smiling back. He made a pretense of shifting his weight, making an excuse to hide his traitorous mouth behind his hand while he personally executed every last butterfly in his stomach.
"What was it you wanted to talk to me about?" Janus asked, beckoning Patton over to a pair of wingback armchairs by the fire. Janus studied it for a moment while he waited for Patton to answer. This space was all his own, and though the pervading chill of Roman’s melancholy dampened the effect of the roaring fire somewhat, it was still comfortable.
"Um," said Patton. Janus watched him fidget with one of the studs on the armchair. "I just… I don't want to sound rude."
Anticipatory dread pooled in Janus' stomach. Great. So Patton was here to offer up some criticism, was he? Let him try. "Well, don't keep me waiting."
"It's just…" Patton looked up at him, his glasses reflecting the light from the fire and the Edison bulbs. "Do you want something from me?”
Panic whited out Janus’ vision for a split second before he got ahold of himself. He was a better liar than that. “What do you mean?”
“Well, it’s like you said to Virgil…” Patton shifted in his chair and wouldn’t look at Janus. “Quid pro quo. And you gave me-- You’ve been so nice to me. And everybody else seems to want something from me, so I just thought…”
“Oh,” said Janus, thinking back to the conference room. Logan and Roman hadn’t thought twice before calling on Patton to take up their burdens, and of course Patton hadn’t advocated for himself. “There are things I want from you, alright.” He waited for Patton to look up before continuing, “I want you to prioritize yourself for once. I want you to protect that bleeding heart of yours. You can’t keep going like this, Patton. You’re bound to collapse again, and I don’t want to see that happen.”
Patton swallowed hard, sniffled. “You made that truce with Virgil. Why?”
"For you , of course," Janus said, dressing the truth in the extravagant trappings of sarcasm and parading it in plain sight. Mocking himself. "All for you, Patton." Quieter, to himself, he said, "For Thomas." A reminder.
Patton nodded. "I didn't mean to imply-- Of course you'd think that of me. I swear I-- I never wanted it to be like this."
Confused and determined not to show it, Janus said, “I really do want to help you. It’s like I said earlier, I…” And maybe this was giving a little too much of himself away, so far from the strange liminality of last night, but how could he help it? “I respect you. I understand you a little better now.” Half of him, the stupid half, the idiotic , saccharine, unbearably-sickeningly-obscenely desperate half wanted to kneel at Patton's feet and swear to fix it for him. Janus could take the burden of leadership, Janus could bear the scorn of Patton's friends on his behalf. Janus would take the pressure, and all he would ask in return was Patton's devotion. He almost scoffed aloud at himself. That wasn’t how this worked. Shifting the weight wouldn’t make Patton any less self-effacing, and he didn’t want Patton in his debt. All he could do was provide support, and burn quietly and not let the smoke sting anyone’s eyes.
“You’re so sweet sometimes,” Patton said sadly. “I wish I’d known.”
Janus didn’t miss that ‘ sometimes,’ the pointed reminder that his heart was guarded, his defenses sharp. The gates were either open or closed, and he couldn’t let anyone else in. It was hard enough letting Remus know that he was capable of anything other than snide remarks and cutting words. He had let Roman and Logan see inside when he had made himself vulnerable to Thomas, and look where that had gotten him. Roman had struck for the heart. “I have a lot to offer,” Janus said, gently trying to steer the topic back to safer territory. “But so do you, Patton. You’re far stronger than I gave you credit for, and I want-- I want you to take care of yourself.”
“Them first,” Patton said, and Janus had to fight to keep his frustration from showing on his face. Suddenly it was all too much, the proximity to Patton and his maddening refusal to look after himself. Janus felt himself on the verge of yelling or lunging forward and kissing Patton hard on the mouth. Instead, he pressed his fingers to his forehead like he’d just remembered something. “Oh.”
“Oh?” Patton leaned forward, cocked his head.
“I almost forgot; Remus had asked me for help with something.”
“You’re friends?” Patton asked.
“That, dear Patton, is a conversation for another day.” Janus stood and motioned for Patton to walk to the stairs. “After you.” The pain of unfulfilled desire sat tight and heavy in his chest; he could make Patton feel alright. But that wasn’t what either of them needed; no temporary pleasure could mend these wounds.
“I think you’re right.” Patton got up and mounted the stairs. “But thank you, Janus.” He paused, one hand on the trapdoor, and turned. “Really. It helps knowing that…”
“That I've got your back,” Janus said. “And I hope you can believe me when I say that.”
Here in the dark, where the dim light from the Edison bulbs didn’t quite reach, Janus could only guess at the look on Patton’s face. “I do,” he said, nearly in a whisper.
Then light flooded in and Janus blinked and steadied himself against the railing, and when his eyes had adjusted, Patton was gone.
Well, then. Off to Remus.
Janus’ breaths burned his lungs as he walked, coming shallower and shallower, until he had to pause, disgusted with himself. But the panic attack never came, and the burn in his lungs retreated, and he kept walking.
He was out of breath again by the time the halls brought him to Remus, who had constructed a blood-spattered laboratory for himself. Doll bodies decorated the counters and exam tables, interspersed with scissors and scalpels and pliers.
"Did you run here or what?" Remus asked, nonchalantly tossing a Barbie head into a red biohazard bin.
"Sprinted," Janus wheezed, falling against the counter. A few limbless torsos fell and clattered onto the linoleum.
Remus bent over to pick them up before Janus could so much as roll his eyes. "You gotta stop smoking, Jan." Janus nodded, too winded to even go along with the joke. He forced himself to stand up straighter and take deep breaths, which seemed to help a little. It still hurt to inhale. Remus frowned at him. "Seriously, did you convince yourself you have asthma, or what?"
"I'm just tired out after running from my hordes of admirers," Janus said, waving a hand to dismiss the topic. Whatever it was, he could think himself out of it later.
“Oho.” Remus picked up a hot glue gun and aimed it at a small leg that looked like it had come from a Polly Pocket doll. “Have another rendezvous with the Loveland Frogman?”
“Nothing like that,” Janus said, distracted. His lungs seemed to itch , somehow. He swallowed experimentally, but it definitely wasn’t his throat causing the discomfort. Forgetting Remus altogether, he coughed into his fist. That helped a little, though a residual burn made him dig at his ribs with his fingertips.
“We did Chestbursters last Halloween,” Remus said. “Hold this.” He thrust the glue-covered leg at Janus, who quickly swapped his nice gloves for blue nitrile, throwing on a lab coat as an afterthought. “ Did anything interesting happen?”
“Oh, you know, apart from the orgy, not much,” Janus said, finally examining Remus’ handiwork. Before them on the table sat a torso. It had no limbs attached except for the right shoulder, which was a mess of tiny Polly Pocket arms and legs, all sticking out like the ribs of a hand fan. “That’s unsettling.”
“Aw, only unsettling?” Remus took the leg back from Janus and added it to the shoulder socket. “I was going for ‘skin-crawling.’”
Another itch flared up in Janus’ lungs and he clawed at himself again, only noticing when it started to hurt. The nitrile was not as thick as his usual gloves and did less to disperse the pressure from his fingertips. He turned away and coughed again until the itch went away. “‘Skin-crawling’ is also apt,” he said, turning back like nothing had happened.
“Did you inhale some doll hair?” Remus asked, holding up a pair of scissors with a guilty expression.
“Must have,” Janus said, forcing himself to believe it. He had no other explanation. He flinched at the sudden weight of a particulate respirator against his face, glanced up to see that Remus was also wearing one.
“There,” Remus said, his voice muffled. “Only the best for my trusted assistant. Now hand me the pliers; we have corpses to deface.”
--
Much to his annoyance, Janus’ cough only got worse throughout the day, dragging a scratchy throat and sore ribs in its wake. He ended up going to bed early out of desperation, thinking it was some sort of exhaustion-related malady, not that he’d stretched himself so thin lately. One night of sleep deprivation should barely have touched him.
He was tired, though, and his thoughts drifted as he brushed his teeth. (This, strictly speaking, was not necessary. But he was Self-Care; he had to set an example). He imagined standing elbow-to-elbow with Patton at the bathroom counter, brushing his teeth while Patton… Did whatever he did before bed, washed his face or something. Just something domestic and sweet for his brain to hold onto, like hard candy. But it didn’t keep the horrible, roaring desire at bay, nor the aching loneliness that had never troubled him before. He wanted, he wanted, he wanted , and here in the solitude and silence, there was nothing to drown it out.
Nothing except for that godforsaken itch in his lungs. Janus doubled over at the sink, spitting out toothpaste foam as his diaphragm spasmed almost of its own accord. He focused as hard as he could on the idea that he was fine, but the coughing refused to abate. Panting slightly, he rinsed his toothbrush and let it skitter across the tiled countertop. If he wasn’t better by tomorrow, Remus would offer to help, and Janus would most certainly take him up on that.
He slept fitfully because of course he did. Nothing was ever easy, was it? The cough troubled him only a little, drowned out in a sea of half-dreams. Visions of Patton or Roman or Virgil, screaming fights, dirty make-outs, displays of violent passion he held himself above, all whirled in his drifting mind like a carousel. It was a vision of Roman that finally woke him up, screaming in his face and driving fist after fist into his solar plexus. "It should be you, it should be you, it should be you! Why can't you just leave us the fuck alone?"
He woke up coughing, disoriented, and rolled over to curl up on his side. It felt for all the world like his body was trying to expel something, something soft and damp that clung to the side of his throat and would not be moved no matter how deeply he coughed.
When he realized he wasn't suffocating, he rolled over to switch on his bedside lamp (bright incandescent bulb, white laboratory lighting, no shadows) and jammed his fingers in his mouth. Sure enough, something velvet soft and wet with saliva slid along the edge of his mouth. He found the edge of it and held it tight between his fingertips, pulled it out of his mouth to examine it.
Reflexive delight flared up before horror and confusion took its place; it was a flower petal. Bright orange and fan-shaped, Janus recognized the familiar hue of a California poppy. He wasn't sentimental enough to have a favorite flower, but the sight of California poppies decorating a green West Coast hillside always made him smile. Bright and summery, they grew in unassuming places and transformed the landscape into art.
So what was a singular California poppy petal doing in his throat? A terrifying thought crossed his mind; he doubled up on the mattress, supporting himself on three arms, and forced himself to cough until he felt that his throat might tear open. Not thinking, he spat into his hand and was rewarded with the sight of shreds of orange and green. Petals and leaves.
Not his throat, then. His lungs. Denial lunged at the first sign of panic, Janus' function kicking in. It was probably nothing, probably some prank of Remus' that he hadn't fully thought through. It was nothing to worry about. Janus was only in minor discomfort and half of that was his own doing, from coughing so hard. He put his extra arms away and lay back on the pillows. He could ask Remus about it in the morning.
Despite the sweet haze of denial telling him not to worry, Janus marched straight to Remus’ room as soon as he awoke. He didn’t even bother to change out of his pajamas. He was angry, he decided on the way over, and not in the fun way. The ghosts of his nightmares trailed behind him, mocking him, and only stopped when he realized he was working himself up into a defensive rage. Remus didn’t deserve that, even if this was all his fault. Which it was. It had to be.
Still, Janus opened the door without knocking, steeling himself against the inevitable horrorshow within. He was greeted with the sight of Remus asleep, all his walls broadcasting scenes from Janus’ most intimate nightmares: mouths sewn shut with leather, pierced shut with metal; spiked muzzles and scold’s bridles; crude glossectomies-in-progress. He steadied his breathing, despite the pain it caused him, and forced the images to fade into bare white walls.
“Rise and shine,” he said, striding toward the bed.
“Fuck off,” said Remus, not moving.
“I need your help,” Janus said, counting on the plea to catch Remus’ attention. Janus never asked for help; he never asked for anything. It was one of the unspoken rules that governed his conduct and kept him safe from debts.
Remus sat up, the covers falling from his bare chest. He blinked at Janus and rubbed his eyes, smearing purple eyeshadow down his cheeks and and just below his temples. “Are you dying?”
“I might be, if you don’t get rid of these damned flowers.”
“Flowers?” Remus looked Janus up and down, nose wrinkled in obvious confusion. “What flowers?”
“Oh, come on, Remus,” Janus said. Begged. It had to be Remus causing this. He tapped either side of his abdomen with his pointer fingers. “In my lungs.” As though to illustrate his point, the cough flared up. He buried his face in the crook of his elbow, his throat already protesting the violent treatment.
Remus crawled forward, peering closely at him, then pressed one sticky hand to Janus' face. “Are you sick?”
Janus didn’t answer, instead clearing his throat as he shook Remus off. While they lacked Thomas’ human response to viruses and bacteria, it wasn’t unheard of for a Side to fall ill. Usually it was due to some sort of psychological turmoil related to their function, but Janus was fine. Better than fine, he was accepted. With one final, barking cough, he forced a flower petal into his mouth, and rather than touch it, stuck out his tongue so Remus could see.
Remus took it and Janus shuddered despite himself, grateful that they weren’t susceptible to germs. “Flower petals, hm?” Remus said, “That’s not really my area. If I was going to make you cough something up, it would be, like, bugs or something!” Images flashed on the walls and floor of that very thing, until Janus banished them with a very definitive stamp of his foot. “Anyway,” Remus continued, apparently unphased, “That’s more Don Romano's bag.”
“Well, as you can imagine, it’s very pleasant,” Janus said, crossing his arms. “I don’t suppose you can make it go away?”
“Poof,” said Remus. “Abraca-douchebag. I heal thee. C’mere, Snakey, let me lay my hands on you.”
Janus sighed but obliged, and let Remus touch him with his hand curled in the sign of benediction, then in the shocker. “Gross.”
“Do you feel any better?” Remus asked.
Janus thought about it. No discomfort flared up in his lungs, but he was just standing there. “I’ll get back to you.”
“Great,” said Remus, flopping spread-eagle onto his mattress. “I’m going back to sleep.”
“Sweet dreams,” said Janus, a little parting shot. But he was gentle when he closed the door behind him, and walked quietly until he was out of earshot of Remus’ room. What was he supposed to do now?

Kyle-Kath Gallery
Archi-Tectonics transformed Kyle-Kath Gallery’s Chelsea showroom into a contemporary display space that highlights their collection of richly colored and intricately patterned carpets. With a series of considered interventions to the existing space, the new design reshapes the visitor experience and enhances how guests encounter the art on display.
A new storefront facade—made of ultra-thin black-steel frames, floor-to-ceiling glass plates, and a full-length glazed pivot door—opens the gallery to the street and allows passersby to glimpse the art inside. A projection visible through this facade shows how the carpets are hand-woven and knotted by talented craftsmen in Nepal.
Entering the gallery, visitors are greeted by a new custom-designed reception desk and a bright red cube emblazoned with the Kyle—Kath logo. The desk—composed of intersecting white lacquer and glass volumes—adds a sculptural element to the space and integrates built-in tables where guests can relax and browse the catalogs.
The redesign also enhances the connection between the two floors, introducing a concrete stair with a finely detailed banister made of blackened steel plates. At the top and bottom of the stairs, the steel plates bend 180 degrees, creating a continuous plane that guides visitors around the corners in one fluid motion. The ends of these plates are laser cut, leaving a reveal that showcases the construction of the handrail.

2021 New-construction Home Trends
Located in Naperville, Illinois, this new-construction home by M House Development shares plenty of inspiration and home trend ideas that will make it through to 2021 and beyond.
The exterior of this new home exudes plenty of curb appeal with its impressive architectural details where an arched portico with painted brick is beautifully complemented by a black window tower, board and batten siding and a combination of shingles and a metal roof.
When it comes to the interiors, more trendy interior design ideas can be found. Board and batten is once again found and wisely used as wainscoting. A neutral, but far from boring, color scheme is found in the main rooms of the house. Soothing colors are accentuated with cabinet colors that will continue to be popular in 2021, such as blue grays, light greys, moody greens and of course, the ever classic; black and white.

New Post has been published on http://inspirationist.net/oslo-residential-complex-features-timeless-look-complemented-by-modern-details/
Oslo residential complex features timeless look complemented by modern details
This residential complex project by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter is located along Bygdøynesveien road, on the Bygdøy peninsula just outside Oslo in Norway. The area is characterized by residential buildings with large gardens and green spaces, as well as proximity to several well-known museums and landmarks. With its distinctive character, Bygdøy is a very attractive area in Oslo. The plot, a 16-acre English-style park, belonged to a New Baroque mansion that until 2012 was used as the Canadian ambassador’s residence.
The main house from 1916 and the central park area are regulated for the preservation of the cultural environment, while new buildings are allowed in rows of separate villas on each side of the park.
The target group of the BNV15 housing project is defined by a layer of solid economy that wants quality housing and proximity to Bygdøy and its qualities. The apartment mix provides the opportunity to adapt different types of households within this segment. The architecture uses solid materials that refer to qualitative living environments.
The architectural main approach is based on the site’s regulation with six freestanding buildings, three on each side of the property’s park facilities. Since these have different character and orientation, the architects have divided them into two typologies: the park houses, to the east, which lie between Bygdøynesveien and the property’s park, and the garden houses, to the west, located in the green area between the property’s park and adjacent property to the west. Both groups refer in scale and design to the residential construction of the local context of Bygdøy.
It was important to have a nuanced approach to the place with the distinctive and valuable historical buildings on the site, while at the same time the new apartments would offer attractive housing with good indoor and outdoor space for the residents. Therefore, it was crucial to define connections to the surrounding park, the garden, the building environments and the neighboring properties.
The park houses are organized so that they face the park in the west with access from the east side towards Bygdøynesveien. The volume of each house is organized so the main entrance is clearly displayed and centrally located. This helps to articulate a simple vertical order. Essentially, the floor plan is organized according to light and orientation so that the day rooms are organized to the southwest and the park while the bedrooms mainly towards the northwest. The garden houses are oriented to the southwest and in the east facing the park with access from it. The building group has a character that addresses the surroundings in a different way in relation to the type of apartment.
The apartments on level 1 have their own private ground floor parcels facing two directions and direct access to the park. The floor plan is organized according to light and orientation so that the daytime zone always has daylight from three sides with contact both towards the park and towards the evening sun in the southwest.
The architecture uses solid materials that refer to distinctive qualitative living environments. The buildings have cladding of light-soaked bricks in a bright design that link the buildings to the main house. The brick’s special long format and unique, uneven surface give the facades a timeless look that is complemented by modern details and design language.
Brick mortar is tinted in the same color to give the facades a calm and homogeneous feel. The aim was to use a very limited material palette in addition to the brick facade, including glass in window openings, oak for entrance doors and black-lacquered window frames and technical installations. Prefabricated tile panels are used for exterior ceilings, window sills, and horizontal guardrails on the roof terraces. Brick lattice walls have been also used in front of selected windows with a special need for visibility and in larger fields on the terraces facing the garden.
The buildings are constructed with sedum roofs which help to fit in the surroundings. The outdoor areas are characterized by robust materials such as cobblestones on footpaths, plastered concrete in ramps and retaining walls, Corten steel for plant boxes and black-lacquered handrails, gates and lighting elements. Beech hedges are planted between the buildings and the existing lime hedge has been returned to the park. Thus, the private gardens are given a shielded character with limited access to the apartments.
Furthermore, deep bursts on the roof terraces ensure privacy between the neighbors. The outdoor rooms thus create an atmosphere of landscape proximity and architectural quality. Inside, bricks are also used on selected exterior walls against the roof terrace, oak veneer around the core of the floor plan and oak piles in parts of the ceiling, as well as high-quality wooden floors. Other wall and floor surfaces, e.g. in the bathroom, have been open to the choice of buyers.

Corner Lot New-Construction Home Ideas
Built and designed by Veranda Estate Homes Inc., this custom home was designed to take advantage of the unique raised corner lot that it sits on. Every side of this home had large scale windows to take advantage of the raised elevation off the street which gives it total privacy and walls of green trees once summer decides to show its face in Calgary. Since the home was a spec home, meaning the builder was building it without specific clients in mind, they were able to push the envelope with the overall plan and interior selections.
While each space is unique and individual, they kept the theme of black, white, and natural color wood elements consistent throughout the home. There are a lot of elements in this home that the designer, Melissa Manzardo Hryszko, gets asked about often. One is the staircase railing, which is a design she came up with for another home about 7 years ago. While it is certainly not cost effective, she felt it was a great investment for the space as it certainly demands attention. The staircase is a combination of custom iron post in a matte black finish, 10 mm glass panels, & a 1/4 sawn oak handrail. It goes perfectly with the black stringers and natural finish hardwood treads.
The other feature people love are the dividers that she incorporated into the informal dining area. This space is viewed right when you walk into the home so she knew they had to somehow make this space special and define it in some way. The industrial feel that these dividers add was the perfect touch to define the space.
The counters are another thing people loved when viewing this home, you can’t help but touch them! They are a leathered Angola Black granite, simple and clean but the leathered finish takes these up a level!
Enjoy the tour, everyone!

Beauty Handrails for Stairs Interior
Handrails for stairs interior – While appearance of a railing is functional, design beyond function to integrate beauty and craftsmanship. A handrail is a key element in staircase design, loft, mezzanine and sunken areas as family room or in homes and condominiums. While developing your ideas, consider needs of those using staircase. Choose materials, correct height, width, security and resilience to meet needs of family members and frequent visitors.
Modern handrails for stairs interior convey a sense of openness. Handrails should be simple and straightforward, with minimal decorations on actual handrail. A flat design for handrail, even works best, instead of a curved or embellished with grooves. Male Handrail in a basic color such as black, gray or white to complement interior of room. Use steel cable wires, horizontally placed and staggered every 4 to 6 inches between balusters points for a sleek, high-tech look.
Classic staircase design that has turned balusters should have handrails that complement this style. Incorporate a handrails for stairs interior  that has curves, bellows and grooves on base where banister attach balusters. Choose classic forests of oak, mahogany and walnut stain on banister. Rail to add ease and smooth to touch, as people understand Handrail to assist in climbing stairs. Classic lacquered wood rails add elegance to stairs with wrought iron baluster in area between handrail and bottom of stairs.

Konstantin Grcic designs "strictly vertical" Primo chair for Mattiazzi
German designer Konstantin Grcic has created a straight-legged "archetypal" chair for Italian furniture brand Mattiazzi.
Unveiled at Milan design week, the Primo chair has been designed using only the most stripped-back elements, with its plain square seat sitting atop four "strictly vertical" legs, chosen by Grcic to give the chair a "strong architectural presence".
The back legs extend upwards to support a curved chair back, which has been slightly tilted to lend the chair some comfort, as well as contrast its straight lines.
"I felt like Mattiazzi had one chair missing, and that was the most archetypal, simple chair," Grcic told Dezeen. "A chair that you feel exists, but actually doesn't."
Grcic previously created a bench-like chair for the Italian furniture manufacturer, using flat sloping planes of wood.
"I wanted Primo to have very upright geometry, and I think a chair that has completely vertical front and back legs has a very different presence," he said. "It relates to space and architecture."
The chair, which is designed for home environments as well as public spaces, comes in beechwood as well as black lacquered and gold finishes. There's also an upholstered version of the chair made from solid oak.
An accompanying Primo table mimics the shape of the chair with four plain vertical legs, each of which is detachable, allowing the table to be shipped flat. It is available in an additional finish of Fenix laminate, which was first developed for kitchens, and protects from heat, scratches and fingerprint marks.
Mattiazzi, which is based in Udine in north eastern Italy, also unveiled a new collaboration with the Bouroullec brothers, a minimal ash lounge chair, at this year's Salone del Mobile in Milan. The brand has previously collaborated with London studio Industrial Facility.
Grcic originally trained as a cabinetmaker before studying design at the Royal College of Art in London. He set up his own studio in Munich in 1991, and has created furniture, lighting and products for Cassina, Vitra and Muji.
He ranked 14th among designers on Dezeen Hot List – a data-driven power list of the top designers, architects and brands.

Transitional Family Home Design
Hello, my wonderful friends! How are you today? I hope everything is good with you. I am really excited to be sharing this Transitional Family Home built and designed by one of my favorite Canadian builders, Veranda Estate Homes Inc.. They have been featured on the blog before (see the links below) and they are not only very talented and knowledgeable but they are always aware of the latest trends, so seeing their homes always feel refreshing.
Here, Melissa Manzardo Hryszko for Veranda Estate Homes Inc., shares some more details about this beautiful and inspiring new Family home:
“This home was initially designed and built as a spec home in the community of Altadore in SW Calgary. Since we were building this home with no ‘end-user’ in mind, we wanted to ensure that it ticked all of the right boxes to appeal to the masses. Featuring over 3400 Sq. Ft. above grade and an additional 1,175 Sq. Ft of lower-level development with two additional bedrooms, a full bathroom, rec room with a wet bar and home gym.
We were lucky enough to have a buyer come along at the framing stage. This allowed us to customize this home to work with their needs as a family.”

New Post has been published on http://inspirationist.net/wework-weihai-lu-by-linehouse-is-nestled-in-a-former-opium-factory/
WeWork Weihai Lu by Linehouse is nestled in a former opium factory
WeWork Weihai Lu is nestled in a turn of the century brick building; a former opium factory and artist residence. This building is surrounded by an old residential district in the heart of Shanghai. Linehouse celebrated the grandeur of the building, encapsulating the feeling of a grand hotel, transporting guests and members on an unexpected journey of whimsy, voyeurism and festivity.
Upon arrival guests pass through an old laneway, framed by a traditional Chinese arch. The lane walls are painted pink and the floor pink concrete. Above, lights are festively suspended between the laneway walls.
The existing site is a combination of a brick historical building with further industrial additions that have been made over the years. The reception is located in this in-between zone of the old and new. Linehouse played with this narrative in the design. The reception counter is clad in heritage wood paneling, surrounded by a concrete base. A bronze metal structure hangs lighting and creates leaners. Behind the reception, guests are greeted with a neon sign ‘Ring For Service’ contained in a cabinet of curiosities, painted in a light blue.
The existing steel structure is painted ivy green, with a new black metal and black stained OSB handrail leaner wrapping the triple height space, allowing guests to be spectators to the activities below.
A green steel staircase weaves through the circulation space connecting all three levels of the front of house. This is clad in triangular pieces of oak wood, with one side painted in hues of blue. The colours alternate as you travel up the stair creating a gradient of tones, and shifting views from wood to blue.
The staircase leads to the two pantry areas that play on the opium factory narrative, with large scale poppy wallpapers, hand painted in gold. The central atrium is surrounded by the heritage façade. A curved terrazzo tray was inserted to define the space, pastel diagonal strips in blue, green, pink and grey wrap the floor and wall, creating a hardscape carpet. A bronze structure is suspended above the terrazzo perimeter wall, hanging mirrors, artwork, shelving and lighting.
A bespoke lighting installation is suspended in the triple height space. Pink and grey cabling traverses the void threaded through circular bronze rings which hang custom glass shades.
Passing through the central atrium space to the back bar located within the heritage building, one is transported to a tropical retro oriental parlor. A gold gradient wallpaper wraps the perimeter wall, with hand painted Shanghai ladies, clothed in zebra attire and adorned in gangster bling, their era blurred between the 1920’s and the present day. A blue and pink neon in the shape of a fan frames the pantry area.
Custom wallpapers continue to play on this festive theme, with geometric and interweaving patterns in pastel tones, these are hand painted over in gold and green. The bathroom walls are lined with custom printed tiles in pink and green interconnecting lines and shapes. The ceiling is painted a dusty pink, and a mint green lacquer box contains the cubicles, custom bronze light fixtures and mirrors create a parlor-like vanity.

WeWork opens "whimsical" co-working space in former opium factory
Shanghai studio Linehouse has transformed a former opium factory with green-painted metalwork and pastel-coloured terrazzo to create the Chinese flagship for co-working company WeWork.
Located in Shanghai's Jing'An district, the 5,500 square-metre WeWork Weihai hosts more than 1,300 members of WeWork, a co-working company that offers rented desk spaces at relatively low cost, with shared amenities for workers.
Local studio Linehouse overhauled the derelict 20th-century building to create a grand, hotel-like space that references its history as a store for opium, and then as an artist's residence.
"WeWork Weihai Lu is nestled in a turn of the century brick building; a former opium factory and artist residence. This building is surrounded by an old residential district in the heart of Shanghai," said the studio.
"Linehouse celebrated the grandeur of the building, encapsulating the feeling of a grand hotel, transporting guests and members on an unexpected journey of whimsy, voyeurism and festivity."
The studio repainted both the existing steel structure and the staircase that weaves through up the main circulation space an ivy green.
Prism-shaped flats of oak wood clad the staircase, which connects all three levels of the front of house area. One side is painted in hues of blue that alternate up the staircase to create a gradient of tones from natural wood to blue.
On the three levels, a new black metal handrail with black-stained chipboard balustrades wraps the triple-height atrium space, allowing guests to be spectators to the activities below.
Two pantry areas on these floors are covered with hand-painted gold poppy printed wallpaper – a reference to the opium factory.
Photograph by Dirk Weiblen
The U-shaped brick building wraps a courtyard, which creates a three-storey atrium surrounded by the existing facade – now occupied by an open-plan workspace and bar.
A curved terrazzo tray slots into the central atrium to define the space, and is decorated with a pattern of pastel-coloured diagonal stripes.
Terrazzo walls are used to partition different areas in the open space. A bench with dark blue cushions slots into one area, while a brown leather sofa occupies the corner.
Wooden tables of various shapes furnish the space along with dark blue hardshell chairs. One the other side are larger tables for more collaborative working.
A custom-made light installation is suspended above the triple height space. It features a web of pink and grey cabling threaded through circular bronze rings, which hang custom glass shades.
A bronze structure mounted on the terrazzo perimeter wall creates a framework for hanging mirrors, artwork, shelving and lighting.
When arriving, members enter through an old laneway framed by a traditional Chinese arch with lights suspended above. The walls are painted pink and the concrete floor is tinted in a similar hue.
The reception area is located between the existing and the extensions, so Linehouse clad the desk in heritage wood panelling but surrounded the base with concrete – a play with the in-between zone of the old and new.
Behind the reception, a blue-painted cabinet of curiosities hosts a neon sign reading Ring For Service.
The back bar, located within the heritage building, is furnished like "tropical retro-oriental parlour".
The gold gradient wallpaper, features hand-painted Shanghai ladies clothed in zebra attire and "adorned in gangster bling", while a blue-and-pink neon light in the shape of a fan frames the pantry area.
Other custom wallpapers, including geometric and interweaving patterns in pastel tones hand-painted over in gold and green, continue this theme.
The bathroom walls are lined with custom-printed tiles, while the ceiling is painted a dusty pink.
A mint-green lacquered box contains the cubicles and the lights and mirror fixtures are made from bronze.
Weihai Lu forms part of WeWork's expansion into China, which it is undertaking in partnership with Sino-Ocean Group.
The company, which also recently unveiled its first co-living apartments in New York, has three spaces in Shanghai, with a fourth in the pipeline and another two set for completion in Beijing.
WeWork's spaces form part of the growing trend for co-working – flexible and communal workspaces – opening around the globe to cater to an increasingly self-employed workforce.
Others include a Yves Behar's boutique Canopy in San Francisco design by Yves Behar, while Tom Dixon was involved in London's Atrium
