This was just sent to me. Idk why. But it reminded me of when I was called an #Oreo in middle school. It was b/c I spoke proper English & was smart (straight A’s). This is how some black ppl have been brought up to believe. That excelling in something is only for white ppl. They even went as far as to ask if I were mixed. I’m light skinned & I had no pigment as a newborn. All of that “evidence” must prove there is white in me. (Like it made/makes a difference) Young black ppl are taught “white is right.” It’s on our televisions, in our books, taught in history classes. We must change that narrative. I felt so bad being called that. It was like all my hard work was trying to be attributed to trying to be white. I worked so hard to get straight A’s b/c “'you need to do double what they do so you can level them.” This teacher praised me for speaking so well in a condescending tone as if I was supposed to speak Ebonics. That hurt...a lot. Black kids are taught how to act around #WhitePeople so they won’t think you’re just another #statistic. #BeingBlack is exhausting. But I wouldn’t change it for the world. They soul in my eyes. The royalty in my blood.
