The concept of legendary bladers was such bullshit how are you gonna spend two seasons going "heros are made not born and power comes from community and there are no chosen ones" and then throw all of that in the trash as soon as you need a new plotline

Mayblade 2025 prompt 28. Unpopular character: Ivan Papov (NOT TRUE IVAN WE LOVE YOU)

(Ivan or Ian, I've always called him Ivan. Also I'm posting this in advance as I'll be travelling the whole week, sorry)

Pov: Ivan Papov home alone during the G-Rev World Tournament

Ivan getting interviewed right after finding out he's out of the team because the rich kid Hiwatari dedided at the last minuted to fly to Moscow and took his place

Yuriy who deep down cares about the smol one in Neoborg and asks him if he's okay

How Yuriy finds him

Sergey/Spencer and Boris/Bryan also checking on him to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid out of despair

Boris/Bryan and Ivan hugging each other at the airport, with Ivan asking him to keep up with their tradition and wipe out the stadium on his behalf too

A sad Ivan walking lonely back home

Once at home, he takes one minute to remember his teammates, now up in the sky (alive and flying to New York)

One minute later, starting to appreciate his new daily life in Moscow, with the whole apartment for him

Also discovering - now that dad Sergey/Spencer is away - that cooking can be quite complicated

One week into his new life, chores time has to come and he actually enjoys it

A week later, watching Kai Hiwatari throw his bey out of field on purpose in the match against the Bladebreakers in Italy, just to be followed by Yuriy loosing against smol Daichi

Ivan a few minutes later, in the backyard of their apartment, when he realises that he had to give up his place in the team namely for Kai Hiwatari who is now having a tantrum and not doing his job properly

Returning to his chores to let off steam (he is really into it now and that home has never been this clean since the four of them moved there)

Spending most of the time playing Boris/Bryan's games, except for when he is watching Beyblade matches, cleaning or trying to cook something edible

Deciding one day to stop driving cars on the computer and actually drive Sergey/Spencer's real car, because he has trained, the tournament is nearly over and this is the only chance and age is just a number after all

Bonus: Ivan, a couple of hours later, in videocall with Yuriy from Japan who is asking if everything is alright at home as they'll be back in a few days

mayblade day 5 - wings

Once, Yu asked him what it was like to fly.

"How would I know?" Tsubasa asked, shooting him a sideways glance. Heat waves radiated up from the hot pavement, melting Yu's ice cream all over his hands. I should've gotten him a cup, he thought.

Yu pouted. "I figured if anyone knew, it'd be you, since you have your eagle and you're always leaping into air and stuff."

Despite himself, Tsubasa laughed.

"Plus," Yu continued, "that one time, when Phoenix-- or, I guess Gingky's dad-- came to the Dark Nebula to get you away from Ryuga, he swooped in and leapt into the air with you." He jumped once to make his point, arms flailing. In one final bite, he downed the remainder of his ice cream cone.

"Hmm." Tsubasa closed his eyes. He could still feel the wind in his hair, the terrified beating of his heart, the fear thrumming in his blood. But underneath it all, the exhilaration of free fall. He wish the circumstances were different. With no wings of his own, it was the closest he'd ever come to flight.

"So? What was it like?" Yu's eyes were wide, genuinely imploring.

"Maybe I could show you."

"What? How-- Hey!"

Tsubasa heaved Yu onto his shoulder, spinning him around and staggering slightly under his weight. He didn't let himself fall, instead using the momentum to run forward.

"Tsubasa!" His hands were sticky-- Yu had wiped them on his clothes, and the sweet sugar stained his own skin now. He didn't mind. Yu was laughing, really laughing for the first time since Battle Bladers. It was funny. He didn't know when he'd grown fond of the kid.

His eagle cawed at him from above, the sound mixing with Yu's laughs.

I have no wings, Yu, but I'll still show you what it's like to fly.

You know that line Cap'n has about how Fubuki has changed since going to the Raging Bulls takes on a whole knew meaning in the Monstrosities AU.

Cap'n beginning to understand why Honcho didn't always want him to go out after dark, especially during tournament season.

I think, considering how long Fubuki has been seriously Blading (at least a year, since the Beyclub won the last National team tournament), that the monstrosity-fication process would have already begun before he left for the US. However, since the Raging Bulls is under Shu’s direct protection (unlike Japan, which only has Lui’s general protection), being in that environment would have allowed Fubuki to really spread his wings (or in this instance, fins).

Cap’n can tell the difference because Fubuki has spent the last however-long in an urban monstrosity paradise. He’s even getting mentored by Shu, which is an extra level of protection in the eyes of the average monstrosity. I’ve mentioned before how Free, Lui, Shu, and Valt are essentially the Fae Kings of the world, and how Shu taking Fubuki under his wing made him a Fae Prince. So yeah, double that diplomatic immunity.

As for Ranjiro, he’s starting to become a monstrosity himself, and he spent a lot of time around Rantaro (who, again, was already a monstrosity), so he’s not too shocked, he just wasn’t fully aware of the danger.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this outside of DMs, but monstrosities hide their less human attributes with glamors, and the more powerful the monstrosity, the better (and more ‘perfect’ aka uncanny valley-levels of perfection) the glamor is. Some, like Lui and Xander, choose to use less glamor, but Shu and Zac use a lot of it. It’s like magical makeup for them: some like it subtle, others want a full face. This also means that lesser monstrosities, like Rantaro and Daigo, have less effective glamors, so Ranjiro may have also seen some less-than-human facial features on Rantaro before.

(Side note: Shu, while at the Snake Pit, drops a bit of the glamor on his voice, which is why his voice sounds deeper. Post-Evolution, he drops the vocal glamor entirely, because he’s finally old enough for it to match his appearance. He uses no glamor at all post-Project, so the International Bladers’ Cup is the very first time any of the Beyboys see his true [though soul-fused] form.)

Kudos for predicting monstrosity mood swings! During tournament season, especially when it’s the Nationals, monstrosities are ten times more likely to get in a fight, and half the time it’s life-threatening. Remember, not all of the Bladers in these tournaments are monstrosities at all, so there’s a significant chance that some regular-shmegular human kids will find themselves fighting non-humans.

The worst tournament to be alone during is the National team tournament, because the combination of mood swings and team spirit leads to dozens of deaths each year. The safest way to avoid dying is to join a team yourself, and hope your teammates like you enough to protect you. Shu, by saying he’s not a “team-joining kinda guy”, is saying that he’s strong enough and experienced enough to fight off danger by himself. When he joined the Beyclub, it was a public declaration of his protection over the team, since he sure as shit wasn’t joining for his own safety. Note that he was the only member of the Supreme 4 not on a team.

Younger Bladers who are mentored by older monstrosities are less likely to get themselves killed. Any monstrosity that sees them and senses their mentor’s influence on them will have to decide whether or not they want to mess with the mentor. Ranjiro having Rantaro as his mentor and having his own team means it’s very unlikely that he’d ever get attacked. Ranjiro can’t sense others’ influences just yet in Turbo, but he can during Surge.

Fubuki and Suoh can sense each other’s influences (Shu and Lui, respectively), but since that feud was resolved in Evolution, it’s never been a source of tension in their friendship.
