Fall Before the Rise [Bloodofheavenandhell]
Maybe this was a dead end. That she read the note wrong and her client wasn’t ready to bite the dust just yet. Borden Street could look a lot like Bouchard Boulevard if you squinted hard enough and maybe rubbed the ink off the last letters. With an exasperated sigh Eva trekked along the creaky stairwell of the apartment. The only residents that she could hear were the light scurrying of rodents and wicked howling of alley cats hunting for their next fix. The only thing that kept her here was the fact that it was an obviously dangerous place to be, and if anyone ventured too far there was no calling for help. Again she peered at the note in her hand. Hell if she knew what the scrawled writing meant.
“Why does this keep happening!?” She screamed into the once thought empty building, the scuttling from earlier echoing louder as the claws against metal bolted away from the sudden noise. Tired of this sketchy building and as far up as she could go before the stairwell looked as if it wouldn’t hold her weight, Eva turned on the heel to go down, the click of her heels sounding in pairs. Her ears perked and she could feel her heart beat in her chest quicken. When she stopped, the second pair of steps did not. Heavy and far from animal, she couldn’t tell if they were coming up or down. This could be her client, but without a hiding place or proper bearings she panicked.
Daring the last set of stairs, she sidestepped along the edge of it, trying to keep on the side where the structure was most stable.Tripping up on the last step and barreling forward, her hands saved her fall but her palms skid along the rusted metal of the worn floors, her fingertips touching the tips of unfamiliar boots.
