A tale of two half marathons is the best summary I can give about today's race. Great first half and sufferfest of a second half as the wheels totally fell off with calf cramps getting the best of me. My nemesis!!! . It took everything I had today to continue when I was ready to quit at English Bay. Knowing my fam and friends were waiting kept me going and I'm so grateful for their support today and during post-race burgers & beers. Love u guys!!! . Made a conscious effort to go out slow for the first few miles of today's half before picking up the pace for a negative split. . Calves were feeling pretty tight to start but nothing new there. Will need to make sure I get a good warm up right before the race start. Two weeks away! . Was fully expecting to run in the rain today. So when it didn't happen, there really wasn't any excuse to get in the planned long run for today. . Body wasn't feeling great to start but after the first hour I opened up the stride a bit and focussed on good form which made a big difference. . Overall, felt great and as this is likely the longest run before #BMOVAN in 3 weeks, confidence is high and nothing like feeling like the hay is in the barn. . Speaking of which I first heard that from @melaniestet who just happened to call at me in my last mile coming home. #fbf to last summer and the 2017 KneeKnacker North Shore Trail Race. It was a pretty tough day with a downpour the morning prior to the race which led to this year's race being tagged with the 'Year of the Squall'. . It was a terrible day as I finished with a respectable 8:46:19 time, but there was a lot of struggling and moments when I was pretty close to dropping. . Why bring it up now? Well, I dropped my name in the lottery for this year's race on the final hour of registration, and with a 45% shot of being selected for one of the 212 available spots, I ended up being drawn with spot 195 last night! Talk about squeaking in right at the end of the lottery! . So with BMO on the schedule for May and SQ50MI in August, this 2nd go at KKNSTR will fit in nicely as a tune up for that first 50 miler in Squamish. . Feeling pretty good about how the start of the year has been going and looking forward to an exciting year going after these big three races. Just need to stay consistent and healthy, and be ready mentally for the challenges ahead.
