Familiar to may countries of the Commonwealth is the ubiquitous Queen Victoria statue. In Christchurch she stands in Victoria Square. The foundation stone was laid down in the year of her death, 1901, commemorating the 50th year of colonial occupation along with the war dead from the Boer War.
