2019 Top Games of the Week: Week 12

I usually do this on Monday but scheduling made that impossible. Since it’s Wednesday I’ll be using the Playoff rankings since they’ve been released.

Any way, what kind of week do we have here? Well, it’s not great. There are a couple of meaningful matchups, but it’s a pretty light slate all told.

The Top Ten Games of the Week

10. USC 6-4 (5-2) at California 5-4 (2-4)

Like I said, it’s a light slate. USC needs to keep winning if Clay Helton wants to stay on as head coach and Cal needs one more win to gain bowl eligibility. The Bears looked like a shoo-in earlier this year until QB Chase Garbers went out, now they can’t score to save their lives and dropped four straight before beating Wazzu last week. It’s the 106th game in this in-state rivalry.

9. #11 Florida 8-2 (5-2) at Missouri 5-4 (2-3)

This is pretty much just a game to keep an eye on in case Missouri tries for the upset. The Gators are on their way to a 10-2 record and a decent spot to make the Orange or Cotton Bowl but a loss here would likely end those hopes.

8. #19 Texas 6-3 (4-2) at Iowa State 5-4 (3-3)

If the right pieces fall into place Texas can still make the Big 12 Championship Game but a win over Iowa State is a prerequisite. The Cyclones’ season hasn’t gone as well as hoped, but ISU came a 2 point try away from another upset in Norman. A home win over UT shouldn’t be as daunting a challenge.

7. Indiana 7-2 (4-2) at #9 Penn State 8-1 (5-1)

Penn State is looking to reassert themselves after a disappointing loss to Minnesota. The Nittany Lions host plucky Indiana, who are off to their best start in who knows how long. The Hoosiers haven’t yet had a signature win this year, but they have taken care of business against the riff-raff, now they get a real big challenge in Happy Valley.

6. UCLA 4-5 (4-2) at #7 Utah 8-1 (5-1)

It’s hard to believe but the match between this 1 loss Playoff contender and 4 win disaster that lost every non-conference game will most likely decide the PAC-12 South. Somehow UCLA has turned around everything around after a terrible start and hold their destiny in their hands. Utah has played the part all year, throwing around opponents and the Utes are dark horse contenders to make the Playoff should they win out.

5. Wake Forest 7-2 (3-2) at #3 Clemson 10-0 (7-0)

It’s very likely that Clemson will go the whole regular season without playing a team that will end the year in the top 25. Even if the Tigers lose they’ll have the division wrapped up. They won’t lose, of course.

4. #23 Navy 7-1 (5-1) at #16 Notre Dame 7-2

The Navy-ND rivalry game will be one of the more high stakes games of the week. Notre Dame could still reach the Cotton Bowl if they win out and Navy will look to do the same as the G5 champion but neither will likely be able to do that with a loss here. It’s the 93rd game in this long rivalry series.

3. #8 Minnesota 9-0 (6-0) at #20 Iowa 6-3 (3-3)

Minnesota needs to claim Floyd of Rosedale for the first time in five years if the Gophers want to keep their Cinderella season going. Iowa has basically been eliminated from winning the Big Ten West, but can play spoiler to their rival. The Hawkeye upset machine hasn’t taken their top ten win this year, this should be the last chance. It’s the 114th playing of this rivalry game.

2. #4 Georgia 8-1 (5-1) at #12 Auburn 7-2 (4-2)

The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry can add another high stakes meeting to the long list. Georgia has found themselves thrust back into the Playoff top four and will be assured a spot in the the Playoff should they win out. Meanwhile, Auburn looks to play spoiler to their rivals. The Tigers can still throw a huge wrench in the Playoff picture by winning here (or better yet winning out). It’s the 124th playing of this great game.

1. #10 Oklahoma 8-1 (5-1) at #13 Baylor 9-0 (6-0)

Oklahoma and Baylor have distinguished themselves as the cream of the crop in the Big 12, and still may play again in the Championship Game. Oklahoma certainly seem to be the best team in the conference, but the Sooners’ surprise upset at Kansas State have made their Playoff candidacy a stretch. Meanwhile Baylor is unbeaten but have shown serious flaws in near misses. We’ll get a clearer picture of what the Big 12 means to the Playoff race after Saturday.

G5 Games of the Week

5. Tulane 6-3 (3-2) at Temple 6-3 (3-2)

Neither team will likely win their respective divisions, so this is just a good game between solid AAC squads. Imagine somebody telling you in 2005 that Tulane and Temple would be playing each other and having the outcome not effect bowl eligibility because both teams already had 6 wins. Crazy right?

4. Wyoming 6-3 (3-2) at Utah State 5-4 (4-1)

Bridger’s Battle will play a role in the Mountain division race. Utah State is still alive with a clear path to the Championship Game. Wyoming will try to play spoiler. The Cowboys nearly upset Boise last weekend and will look to seal the deal this weekend and knock the Aggies out. It’s the 70th meeting between Wyoming and USU.

3. Fresno State 4-5 (2-3) at San Diego State 7-2 (4-2)

San Diego State opened the door up to lose the West division with a home loss to Nevada last week. Fresno State will attempt to snatch the division crown and earn the three-peat with a win over their rival Aztecs. It’s the 59th game in this rivalry series.

2. #25 Appalachian State 8-1 (4-1) at Georgia State 6-3 (3-2)

It probably won’t be a good game but let’s see if Georgia State can hex the Mountaineers the same way rival Georgia Southern did. That would put the Panthers on a surprise track to the Sun Belt Championship Game.

1. Louisiana Tech 8-1 (5-0) at Marshall 6-3 (4-1)

This could be a preview of the C-USA Championship Game as frontrunners Louisiana Tech and Marshall clash for home field advantage. Beware, there are sharks circling. Southern Miss threatens the Bulldogs should they lose and the Herd face competition from FAU and Western Kentucky.

FCS Games of the Week

5. Richmond 5-5 (4-2) at #2 James Madison 9-1 (6-0)

The all-time record in this rivalry series stands at 18-18, let’s see the tiebreaker.

4. Yale 7-1 (4-1) at #18 Princeton 7-1 (4-1)

This is the....142nd meeting all-time between Yale and Princeton. I think I read that right. Man, the Ivy League is crazy.

3. #4 Northern Iowa 6-3 (4-1) at #8 South Dakota State 7-2 (4-1)

Both of these teams should make the Playoff, this is for seeding. Northern Iowa is sitting pretty at #4 despite 3 losses. The FCS poll just doesn’t care, I love it.

2. #9 Furman 6-3 (5-1) at #21 Wofford 5-3 (4-1)

This is it for the Southern Conference. Barring some weird upset in the following week, the winner here will clinch the auto-bid for the FCS Playoff.

1. #3 Weber State 8-2 (6-0) at #5 Montana 8-2 (5-1)

The Big Sky is having one of its best years in recent memory. The league features four top ten teams and the top two face off looking to decide the conference title and get the auto-bid. With a win, Weber State will be all but guaranteed the title. Montana will have to beat archrival #10 Montana State to secure themselves.

Terrific 22 Girls Rankings (November 5th)

There has been a little bit of movement based on some finishing at state championships across the country. We’re a little over halfway done with the state championship season and we’ve seen a few upsets and a few teams really assert themselves. This weekend also marks the first NXN region which means by the next rankings, we will have two teams who have earned their places to Portland.

In terms of which regions are looking good for at-large bids, the Midwest, California, and the Southwest look to be the three strongest regions as of now. California looked as if they had everything wrapped up with St. Francis Sacramento and Newbury Park being able to slip in and for CA to get 2 at-large bids. St. Francis then lost to a couple in-state teams at the Mt. SAC invite, making that possibly in doubt. Newbury Park was behind St. Francis at both Woodbridge and Clovis, so they may need to beat St. Francis in the state merge to earn a spot. Good thing for both St. Francis and Newbury Park is they weren’t very far behind Buchanan at Clovis so they may still be able to earn an auto bid on their own right.

Colorado and Utah both look like they have multiple teams that are strong enough to compete at NXN. It does seem like the NXN committee is willing to pull a team or two each year into the meet that doesn’t have the resume, but looks strong enough to mix it up at NXN. This is where we may see a third team from the SW. 

The Midwest is always strong, but definitely if a team like East Grand Rapids is willing to fight their state association and run NXR. Beavercreek looks like a serious podium threat and Naperville North knows how to get to NXN. 

Regions New York and Northwest could also see a potential third team based on how close the top three are, as currently it looks as if those regions have very solid top twos.

8) Southlake Carroll (S) 8.5- Won their TX region with 48 points over Coppell and Flower Mound. 

9) Boise Senior (NW) 7- Won state with 44 points and a 22 second spread.

10) Springville (SW) 6.5- Won 5A race at UT state meet and was second in the merge.

11) Niwot (SW) 6- Won Colorado 4A and had the fastest average of the day by far.

12) Saugus (CA) 6- Second to Great Oak at Mt. SAC. Actually third in the merge to another CA school, but their gap is much less favorable for the upcoming state meet with almost 2 minutes between.

13) St. Francis Sacramento (CA) 6- Fourth in sweeps race at Mt. SAC. You're only ever as good as you are when you last raced, so we can't be sure if SF is moving backwards or had a bad race, but we'll give them the benefit of the doubt this week.

14) Naperville North (MW) 6.5- Won their regional in IL with 33 points and a 35 second spread.

15) East Grand Rapids (MW) 6- Wins MI D2 with just 36 points.

16) Edina (H) 8- Won state at MN 2A.

17) Coppell (S) 6.5- Runner up to Southlake at their TX regional.

18) Loudoun Valley (SE) 7- Won district.

19) Wayzata (H) 6- Traditional power finds a way to be in the hunt again at the end of the season after a runner up finish at state to Edina.

20) Ridgewood (NE) 6.5- Won county champs with 25 points.

21) Pine Crest (SE) 6- Won their FL region with 51 points.

Fresh bowl projections, now with more Notre Dame CFP debate!

Here are picks for all 40 bowl games, including the College Football Playoff.

September’s wrapped, and college football’s now halfway to the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season. So these weekly bowl projections are still flying somewhat blind, but I think we know which teams are around the top of the board, right?

Each week, I update a board of projected winners for every FBS game, tally up records, and guess what the Playoff committee and bowl committees would do with the results. Things get closer and closer to eventual accuracy as Selection Sunday nears, but more importantly, it’s some weekly fun!

Below, projections for all 40 2018 bowl games. A lot of these will change dramatically over the next two months, so if you don’t like where your team is listed, I bet a few wins on the field will change things!

First, the College Football Playoff

Cotton (Arlington, TX): No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 3 Clemson

Orange (Miami): No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 4 Notre Dame

We were close to some big changes in Week 5. Kind of.

Last week in this space, I picked Penn State and Ohio State to make the Playoff, via the Nittany Lions beating the Buckeyes, which nearly happened. But: back to normal on the Big Ten front.

Elsewhere, Clemson almost lost to Syracuse amid maybe the most awkward QB situation possible, but two things there:

The committee likely would’ve given Clemson some sort of mulligan for losing with a guy who’d been a third-string QB days prior (the committee cited Clemson’s QB injury as a mitigating factor in a loss to Cuse last year).

Now that Clemson’s won, will anything change? If Trevor Lawrence misses a game, it’ll be Wake Forest, a team Clemson is capable of handling without him. The bye week’s after that. If he’s cleared to return, then the hardest game regular season game is ... a trip to Boston College? NC State? South Carolina?

Clemson’s fine.

They haven’t. They don’t ever have to. Bama made the Playoff without a division title last year. If the Irish are unbeaten, they’re in. If they have one loss, they’re candidates. Also as always, I apologize for the Pac-12’s strict bowl order. Getting deserving Pac-12 teams into games they might like is one of the hardest things to work with, along with finding matchups we haven’t seen recently in the many Big Ten-SEC games (though that one’s going fine so far this year).

State Street businesses dread construction but hope for safer, more convenient future

Jackie Bargabos joked that her husband started shopping for life insurance policies for her after finding out that State Street traffic will soon come within a few feet of her office chair.

Bargabos and her husband, Jason, own Aloha Auto Repair on the south side of State Street just west of Veterans Memorial Parkway in Boise. Jackie Bargabos said a project to redo the intersection of State Street, Veterans Memorial Parkway and 36th Street will lop 10 feet off the property where Aloha sits. A sidewalk will be all that separates the wall of her office from cars on State, she said.

“It’s really scary,” said Jason Bargabos, who also works as a technician in the shop. “It’s just unsafe with that much traffic coming through here.”

Jackie Bargabos said she is working with the Ada County Highway District, the agency overseeing the project, to put some kind of barrier between the building and the street. She’s also worried the project will reduce the amount of walk-in business she gets.

Many think the projects will improve the area in the long run. But not everyone is convinced the highway district has the right idea. One member of its governing board said the district is enabling the Valley’s car-dependent culture at the expense of better public transportation and non-car travel.

THE PROJECT

Construction at State and 36th is scheduled to start in February and wrap up this fall. Five buildings have been demolished already: State Street Auto Body; Bristle and Crown, a hair salon; Ideal Lending; a duplex home; and a single-family home.

The $8 million project will revamp the way traffic flows through the intersection. The most radical change is that cars won’t turn left from State Street to go north on 36th or south on Veterans. Instead, they’ll continue through the intersection and travel several hundred feet before arriving at what’s known as a “thru turn.”

There, they’ll merge into the far left lane, make a U-turn and double back to the intersection, where they’ll turn right to head north on 36th or south on Veterans. Signalized pedestrian crossings will regulate traffic near the U-turn area. Using the same timing plan the highway district follows now, engineers will time the pedestrian signals with the signals at State-Veterans-36th to make the process work as smoothly as possible, highway district spokeswoman Nicole Du Bois said in an email.

Bike lane segments will be added near the intersection, according to the project’s design map.

The appearance of the corridor at State and Veterans-36th will undergo a major change, too. Two more buildings, housing the Smoky Davis smoked-meats store and Zen Bento, a Japanese restaurant, will join the five already gone to make way for the wider intersection. Eighteen signs will be removed or relocated, including the signs at Viking Drive In and The Dutch Goose.

The highway district is acquiring about 150,000 square feet of land for the project, not counting 128,000 square feet of temporary construction easements, according to figures obtained by the Idaho Statesman. The district spent $3 million on property acquisitions, Du Bois said.

ACHD anticipates adding high-occupancy vehicle lanes someday, but state law prohibits them, and there’s no sign the Legislature is likely to change that.

SYNCHRONIZED CONSTRUCTION

John Turner, owner of Turner Sportsfair, a bar and shop about 800 feet northwest of the intersection, agreed that the project will hurt business in the short term.

“It always does,” he said. “We just ride it out.”

The Dutch Goose is trying to make the best of the looming dent in its business. Phil Grafft, a supervisor at the restaurant and bar, said the owners have been planning a remodeling project for a year or so, and road construction in front of it offers a chance to do the work while business is already down.

“We’re going try to time it,” Grafft said. “Whenever the construction in front of The Dutch Goose is the gnarliest, we’re going to do some things in here, too.”

He said the restaurant could close for a few days as workers bring the building up to code, renovate its bar and carry out other improvements.

Dozens more businesses will go through the same trials if the highway district’s long-term plan for State Street becomes a reality.

Construction at State-Veterans-36th is the first part of an effort to remake State Street from 23rd Street northwest to Glenwood Street over the next decade or more, said Ryan Head, the highway district’s planning supervisor.

The district will take on major intersections first, Head said, including the ones at Glenwood, Collister Drive and Pierce Park Lane. Of those, the Collister intersection is the next priority after 36th and Veterans, and Glenwood is the last.

After redoing the intersections, the highway district will expand the 4-mile stretch to seven lanes from five now. The district expects all of this work to cost roughly $42 million, Du Bois said.

TRANSIT QUESTIONS

Highway District Commissioner Jim Hansen said he has opposed the State Street projects, as designed, since they were introduced. The district isn’t doing enough to encourage public transportation or non-car options, he said.

“The end result will be some nice big intersections, but we’re going to be nowhere close to achieving our goal of a transit corridor,” Hansen said. “

Putting better bike lanes on both State Street and intersecting streets’ approaches would make it easier for people to get to bus stations, he said. He said the district also should work with Boise and other cities to encourage “transit-oriented” development — high-density housing and commercial buildings — along State Street.

ACHD’s problem is that its leaders don’t want to put in the time to make sure its projects cooperate with the cities’ goals, Hansen said.

“So what we do is rebuild intersections to increase capacity for cars,” he said. “And as a result, we are spending tens of millions of dollars, and we will possibly get a road configuration that will have to be completely redone to have an effective high-capacity transit corridor.”

The highway district isn’t the problem, said Matt Stoll, executive director of Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho, or COMPASS. A bigger obstacle to enhanced public transportation is the Idaho Legislature’s refusal to allow special local sales taxes to pay for rail or bus systems, as other Western cities like Denver, Salt Lake City and Phoenix have done, Stoll said.

ACHD is “putting an honest effort and trying to make (State Street) a mobility corridor within the confines of what the funding realities are regarding public transportation,” he said.

HOV LANES?

Long term, State Street will need better public transportation, Stoll said.

Already, it has the most popular bus route in the Treasure Valley. By 2040, COMPASS predicts, the Valley will have 1 million inhabitants — about 320,000 more than live here now.

“There’s only so many lanes you can put on State Street before you’ve got to look at other options,” Stoll said. “Other than the economy going in the tank, which I don’t believe anybody wants, I don’t know of any successful method of keeping the population from growing in an area like Boise.”

One possibility that’s come up is a right lane reserved for buses and traffic turning into businesses along State Street. Hansen said that would be a good step toward an effective transit corridor.

But is it legal? The only Idaho law on dedicated lanes for high-occupancy vehicles applies only to counties with populations of fewer than 25,000, or to resort cities with populations of 10,000 or fewer. Head, ACHD’s planning supervisor, said there’s been no legal opinion on whether bus-only lanes qualify as HOV lanes.

“We wouldn’t implement them absent some modification to state code,” he said.

Meanwhile, business people like Jackie Bargabos are hoping to get through this year without suffering too much. Once the intersection in front of her shop is done, Bargabos said, traffic should flow more smoothly and could even help people get to her shop.

Another dish at our table was the Veal Picatta. Unlike many versions of thinly sliced veal, this was a nice piece, really a few small filets, seasoned with a superb wine, butter and lemon sauce with a few capers adding a nice contrast. The brightness of the lemon was great to wake up the taste buds. Gino’s knows how to change the recipes in the right way, for this Veal Piccata was a winner.

For a change of pace, one of my guests ordered the Special of the Day, the Butternut Squash Ravioli. These pillows of goodness were very flavorful, with a light sauce finishing them off and allowing the subtle taste of the squash to shine throuh. This dish would put a smile on the face of any vegetarian you brought. Of course, Gino’s Italian Restaurant in Meridian offers a full list of pasta and gnocchi dishes, steak entrees and baked specialties such as lasagna. Fresh fish is brought in daily for special dishes.

At lunch, the menu is kept short and simple. An Eggplant Parmigiana Sandwich was a great choice, the distinctive flavor of the eggplant coming through and cooked just to the point of a slight chewiness, yielding a perfect texture. The sandwich was huge, tasty and made for a perfect mid-day meal. It was so filling I could only eat half, but it reheated later in the day with the same perfect flavors and really allowed a chance to savor the different elements and textures of the sandwich.
