There is no question in my mind that the original Paper Mario is one of the best in the series. It has many returning beloved characters and many new faces set in a whimsically crafted world. While later additions to the series have a variety of new villains the original game's overarching antagonist is Bowser. While I do enjoy change time to time, Bowser is the villain we all think of when it comes to any Super Mario game. The story itself is not overly complex; Bowser steals the mystical Star Rod and uses it to make himself unbeatable. Mario must rescue the seven Star Spirits and Free Princess Peach. Although this may seem simple the game provides a large world to explore and many memorable characters to encounter. There is witty dialogue and an immersive world that is brimming with whimsical colors.
Badges are items that can be equipped to provide a variety of bonuses. There are ways to customize your game play through the badge system. Some of my favorite badges include the Last Stand Badge that causes Mario to take half as much damage as normal when his HP gets low and the Zap Tap Badge that electrifies Mario, causing most enemies to take 1 damage when they physically touch him. The game features a large number of consumable items that can be either purchased at an item shop or crafted via the cooking system in the game. Items like fire flowers are common in Super Mario games but there are other interesting items such as Repel Gel that makes Mario invisible and the Fright Jar that scares away enemies threatening the player. Some of the interesting, crafted items include the Egg Bomb that Deals 6 HP of explosion damage to a single enemy, ignoring its Defense Power and the Strange Cake that Makes Mario either Electrified, Invisible, or Sleepy. Combat in Paper Mario pays homage to Super Mario RPG. It is a turn-based combat system. Enemies are visible on the overworld and initiate a battle if the Mario comes into contact with them. If the player strikes first, they will start the battle if not it may tip in the enemies' favor. In battle Mario and his Party members actions battle which will perform various moves sets. Mario can Jump on enemies, hit them with a hammer or use items like a Fire Flower to burn foes. To win a battle, the player must eliminate all enemies on the opposite side, either by defeating them or by making them run away. The various party members Mario meets along his journey also possess skills for both in and outside combat. Goombario is a friendly Goomba has the ability to grant information about the area he and Mario are standing in at the time. Another Party member named Bombette can use her explosive skills to destroy cracked walls or boulders and can even attack enemies. There is a total of eight party member that each offer their unique skills to the adventure. Party management doesn't involve sorting between an overwhelming number of menus and equipment. It is fairly simple you swap between which member of the group is best for the situation. Partners can't be killed so you only need to manage Mario's Hit Points. If Mario is downed in battle you will restart from your last save location. It is important to save often. During intermissions in the story Bowser and Princess Peach are featured in comical cinematics and gameplay that have really helped develop both characters to the way we view them today. Bowser has a tough guy attitude and yet possesses an emotional side that is developed as the game progresses. At times you almost feel bad for him. He is lonely and in love with a Princess that does not enjoy his company. Of course, you can't blame Peach; he does keep her captive. With a large world and many side objectives and a colorful cast you will most likely enjoy your play through of this wonderful storybook quality game.
